History: (Eternals I#3) - Broop was present with the royal family of Lemuria as they tortured Warlord Kro over his failure to prevent the arrival of the Fourth Host of the Celestials on Earth. Broop joined other representatives of the royal family in jeering Kro. When Kro insisted he could still lead the Deviants to victory over the Celestials, Broop cackled, saying "He's boastful as ever!! Our ruling family has never been short of braggarts!!" However, Kro eventually convinced Brother Tode to let him lead an attack on the humans which would frighten humanity into attacking the Celestials.
(Iron Man I Annual#6) - Broop was present with the royal family of Lemuria as they invaded Olympia and imprisoned the entire population of Eternals then began breaking them down into energy so that Brother Tode could consume them in the hopes of prolonging his life. When Iron Man liberated the Eternals, they took the Deviants captive.
(Avengers I#247 (fb) - BTS) - To safeguard themselves from the Deviants, the Eternals rearranged their molecules into a solid block of stone which they placed in the midst of Olympia.
(Avengers I#247 - BTS) - The Eternals explained the fate of the Deviants to the Avengers and showed off the block which they had been transformed into.
(Avengers I#248 - BTS) - When most of the Eternals chose to leave Earth as the Uni-Mind, the Uni-Mind ferried the block of Deviants into space with it to ensure those Deviants would never menace Earth again.
Comments: Created by Jack Kirby and John Verpoorten.
Broop's name was revealed in the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe I#3 Deviants entry.
Avengers I#247-248 came out at a time when editor Mark Gruenwald seemed determined to "tidy up" the Marvel Universe, perhaps just to make writing the Official Handbook a little easier. Gruenwald seemed to take a dim view of the many sub-species dwelling on Marvel's Earth and other fantastic locales (see also: Cat People, Savage Land). In addition to depicting the exit of most of Earth's Eternals, the story seemed to suggest that all the Deviants of Earth had been fused into the stone block and expelled from Earth. Eternals II#1 would later clarify that only the royal family had been part of the invasion of Olympia and Eternals II#2 would confirm that Kro was spared that fate.
