History:
(Mighty Marvel Calendar 1976)
- Capricorn was a hero (see comments) whose appearance and
costumed identity were based on the zodiac sign he named himself after.
Comments: Created by Joe Binggeli and John Romita.
On the back pages of the Mighty Marvel
Calendar 1975 an astrological disk was included identifying zodiac
signs, and giving the birthstone, flowers, colors, numbers, and parts of
the body supposedly ruled by each sign. Using this, a competition was
launched for readers to design and send in their own heroes or villains
based on said features, to be revealed in the next year's calendar.
Capricorn was the winner of that competition, invented by Joe Binggeli
of Marine, California. He described the character thus:
"His sign is the goat, hence the goat legs and horns.
His ruling planet is Saturn, world of such virtues as endurance,
industriousness, reliability, stability, patience and concentration.
Capricorns are victors, achieving any goal through hard work.
His element is earth and his birthstone is garnet
(there's a garnet in his belt). His suit is red. He relies on no
weapon, save his own physical and mental powers."
Given that all the aspects of Saturn that Joe
mentions are positive ones, I'm assuming Capricorn was intended to be a
hero rather than a villain.
Since he's only got a single picture of
himself standing alone with no other height references, neither
characters nor objects, it's pretty difficult to guess at his height
(and hence weight). I'd guess he's probably somewhat tall, as he looks
like he is meant to appear imposing, and being really short would
undermine that, but for all we know his goat-like aspects might mean he
is only 3' tall.
As with other
characters created
by fans for official competitions, presumably Capricorn is owned
by Marvel and could in theory turn up in a story. However, given how
things went with Charcoal,
I'm not expecting Capricorn to turn up any time soon.
