His mutated/larger form required more energy to sustain than he could obtain by food consumption. He apparently required a cane, as apparently his frame caused some level of lameness (perhaps hip and/or knee problems).
After absorbing the

History: (Werewolf by Night I#2 (fb) - BTS) - Mark Cephalos was born a dwarf, a fact that he resented. His college rivals teased him for his size.Nonetheless, he earned three PhD's before turning 30.
(Werewolf by Night I#2
(fb) - BTS) - Mark
either experimented on himself or was experimented on by others in some unidentified fashion,
causing his body to grow extra mass and tissue; however, his metabolic
rate changed. This meant he required more energy than his system could
normally absorb in order to stay alive, and so he sought other ways to prevent
his imminent death.
(Werewolf by Night I#2) - While in a helicopter over Los Angeles, Cephalos and Louis witnessed the Werewolf during one of his rampages. They attempted to capture the Werewolf with a net, but he escaped by jumping into the harbor. Cephalos watched as the Werewolf washed up ashore saw him and transform back into his human identity of Jack Russell.
(Werewolf by Night I#2
- BTS) - Cephalos determined Jack's identity and tracked down his
location. He concluded that the energy released during the Werewolf's
transformation was perfect to help his condition.
(Werewolf by Night I#2) - Cephalos visited Jack a month later with the next full moon, and telling Jack he had seen his werewolf transformation, and asking Jack to accompany him.
Jack agreed to accompany him, but Cephalos quickly knocked him out with some sort of gas once they got into his limousine. Cephalos took Jack back to his mansion and loaded him into his energy transfer machine and then fully detailed his plight to Jack. Cephalos loaded himself into the other half of the machine and had Louis start the transference.
During the experiment, the Werewolf broke free before Cephalos could absorb the Werewolf's full energy. While the Werewolf was battling Loius, Cephalos also broke free from the machine, and the pair briefly fought until Cephalos knocked the Werewolf back, stunning his long enough for Cephalos to escape to his helicopter.
Werewolf
gave chase and attacked them in midair, knocking out the pilot, and the
helicopter crashed and exploded in the hills behind the Hollywood sign,
presumably killing Cephalos and Louis.
