History:

(Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu I#2 (fb) - BTS) - Sandra was born in China as the daughter of professor Ling. Even though it wasn't common or too accepted for women to learn the martial artists, Sandra embraced the teachings of the Shaolin and excelled at them.

(Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu I#2 (fb) - BTS) - Professor Ling caught the attention of the villainous Fu Manchu when word got out he was on the cusp of a revolutionary scientific breakthrough. He refused to discuss the nature of his research, actually a way to end world hunger through synthethic foodstuffs, but he did seek out aid from MI-6. Sandy was recruited into the organization by Sir Denis Nayland Smith. He warned her that death might be the price she had to pay for her services before sending her to the United States.

(Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu I#2 (fb) - BTS) - Sandy went to New York under the assumed name of Sandra Chen. She set up shop as the owner of the House of the White Tiger Kung Fu dojo in a neighborhood Shang-Chi was known to frequent. Ten years passed and during her time there she was regularly accosted by a drunk troublemaker (actually an agent of Fu Manchu). She thought nothing of it and stood ready when sir Denis contacted her with a mission to help recruit Shang-Chi.

(Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu I#2) - Shang-Chi was scheduled to meet Sir Denis Nayland Smith right outside Sandy's dojo. When the 'drunk'  attacked him too, he launched the man through the window of the dojo. Feigning ignorance of his identity, she chatted him up and quickly started flirting with the martial artist, taking him to dinner at a local Italian restaurant and introducing him to pizza. Their impromptu date ended with a stroll through Central Park. Shang forgot all about his meeting with Sir Denis Nayland Smith.

(Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu I#2 - BTS) - Fu Manchu's operative reported back to the mastermind about Shang Chi's whereabouts. Hoping to stop his son from contacting Sir Denis, Fu Manchu sent his Si Fan assassins to ambush him in Central Park. Sandra Chen's life was considered a regrettable loss.

(Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu I#2) - Sandra and Shang-Chi were intimately enjoying each other's company on a bench in Central Park when the Si Fan attacked. Shang was impressed when he witnessed Sandra's fighting skills, easily holding off the trained ninja assassins herself. After defeating the Si Fan, they were met by Sir Denis and Black Tar Smith who had finally managed to locate them. Sandy accompanied the men to the British embassay and heard about the mission Denis and Smith had for the martial artist: sending him to China to keep Dr. Ling and his mysterious research safe from Fu Manchu until MI-6 could help him safely defect. Still not revealing who she was, Sandy implored Shang to go help out before passionately bidding adieu.

(Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu I#2 - BTS) - While Shang-Chi traveled to China via commercial airliner, Sandy made her way to the continent too.

(Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu I#2) - Fighting his was through the slums of Peking, Shang-Chi found his mind occupied by his growing feelings for Sandra. He was stunned to find she was actually his contact at the scheduled rendezvous. On the way to her father's estate, Sandra explained to the bewildered Shang-Chi that Sir Denis had involved her to ensure his cooperation in this matter. She ensured him however, that the romantic connection they share was genuine.

(Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu I#2) - Reuniting with her father after ten years apart, Sandra was tasked to prepare tea for Shang-Chi while the professor shared the secret of his research with him alone (the secret being that his research had failed). Sandra dutifully reverted to the traditional, subservient role her father expected of her.

(Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu I#2 - BTS) - Sandra and her father's assistant left the next day by car to contact other operatives of Sir Denis's to set up the defection. However, the assistant turned out to be working for Fu Manchu. He kidnapped her and delivered him to his master. A little while later, Fu Manchu and the Si Fan made their move on the Ling estate, capturing Shang-Chi but professor Ling committed ritual suicide before he could be taken.

(Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu I#2) - Fu Manchu injected his son with a hallucinogenic truth serum to learn the secret of Professor Ling's research. When Shang-Chi refused to tell him, he was thrown into a deadly maze while his mind got ever more clouded by the dementia induced by the serum. Barely able to hold on to his sanity, Shang found his way through the maze's many obstacles and enemies, striking them with lethal force. Confronted with what he thought was an illusion of Sandra, he lashed out and instantly killed her.

(Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu I#2 - BTS) - Freeing himself from the maze, Shang-Chi confronted his father and, under influence of the serum, revealed professor Ling's secret: his research had led to nothing useful. Feeling foolish for having wasted so much time and resources, Fu Manchu beat a hasty retreat when MI-6 attacked his castle. In the aftermath, Sir Denis informed Shang-Chi that Sandra had indeed been killed in the maze. Mournful and heartbroken, the master of the martial arts concluded he had unwittingly become his father's son.

(Master of Kung Fu I#71 (fb) - BTS) - Enjoying a slice of pizza with Leiko Wu made Shang-Chi remember how Sandra introduced him to that particular food.

(Master of Kung Fu I#93 (fb) - BTS) - Reading the Chinese fable called Midnight Wind made Shang-Chi reflect on his life and the people he had met, including his time with Sandra.

Comments: Created by Doug Moench (writer), Paul Gulacy (pencils), Al Milgrom (inks).

It's a shame Sandra Chen didn't survive her first appearance, especially since Moench went through such great lengths to build up her character only to have her killed by a drugged out Shang-Chi. Had she survived, Sandra would have made a fine addition to other New York based street level books like Power Man, Iron Fist and Daredevil. She could easily have been in the Sons of the Tiger, after all she already wore a necklace and ran a dojo called 'House of the white tiger'.
