History:

(Apache Kid#13/4) - Young Jim Clay's first day as a Pony Express rider saw him tasked with a courier ride from Abilene for 57 miles to a remote town, which he needed to cover by nightfall. The ride took him off established tracks into Native American territory. A group of six aggressive Native Americans gave chase, seeking to kill him with arrows and he was hit in the arm. He fired his gun back but was soon trapped on a cliff face. He chose to jump with his horse into the river and landed safely. His pursuers respected his courage. He later used a fire-sterilized knife to extract the arrowhead and put his arm in a sling. Clay rode on but at nightfall, the outlaw Yates brothers demanded his courier package. Thinking quickly but with only one good hand, he distracted them and whipped out his gun, forcing their surrender. He took them into town, as well as his delivery. The old sheriff was glad for the outlaws' capture; chuckling to his friend, he dismissed the Pony Express rider's youth as the sheriff unrealistically considered it an easy-going job with few demands
