History:

(Outlaw Kid I#1/2 (fb) - BTS) - The renegade Crazy Wolf roamed the plains near Caliber City with his trained timber wolf Manitou. He targeted white ranchers and settlers, murdering them in a pattern of wolf mauling followed by killer knife thrust. His trained wolf was to show his spiritual leadership as he sought a following to continue killing white people. But his kills brought in the US Cavalry to apprehend the renegade.

(Outlaw Kid I#1/2) - Crazy Wolf killed local rancher Thompson. The next day, cavalry leader enlisted Lance Temple's aid for his local land knowledge to help track Crazy Wolf. Temple's Native American friend Red Hawk had tracked Crazy Wolf and helped Temple change into his heroic identity of Outlaw Kid. Together they found Crazy Wolf inciting local Native Americans to follow him, despite their desire to remain peaceful. Crazy Wolf told those assembled that he had killed many whites and none could stand against him. Incensed, the Outlaw Kid jumped in and challenged him to a traditional knife fight. The Outlaw Kid narrowly avoided defeat by kicking his foe away, but Crazy Horse called in Manitou to attack. The Outlaw Kid stabbed the wolf and while the Kid was dazed, Crazy Horse lunged from behind, but Red Hawk saved the Kid with an arrow that killed the renegade. The assembled Native Americans considered Crazy Horse a coward and left.

Comments: Created by uncredited writer & Doug Wildey.

The buffalo headdress he wears is apparently distinctive of northern plains Native Americans, particularly the Sioux. Given Outlaw Kid encountered renegade Sioux in issue #3, he may well be a rogue Sioux.

Many of the early adventures of the Outlaw Kid were retconned as dime-store adventure stories, but where this one sits is unrevealed.

Manitou

Manitou was a grey timber wolf obedient only to Crazy Wolf. Manitou had been trained by Crazy Wolf to leap and viciously attack humans on command, although Crazy Wolf would call off the wolf so that he could deliver the killing blow with his knife. Crazy Wolf used his control over the wolf to demonstrate that he had power over wild beasts, thinking this a reason that fellow Native Americans should grant him leadership.

In Crazy Wolf's confrontation with the Outlaw Kid, when Crazy Wolf was kicked away in a ritual knife fight with his foe, Crazy Wolf cheated and called on Manitou to attack the Outlaw Kid, but the Kid stabbed the wolf in the neck and the beast died quickly.
