History:
(Spirits of Vengeance I#1 (fb) - BTS) - A deserter from history's
oldest war, Curtis was exiled to Earth, where he lived a meager Earth
and became morbidly obese. Still able to identify mystic objects by
their vibration, Curtis occasionally aided Daimon Hellstrom in his work.
(Spirits of Vengeance I#1) - After Johnny Blaze acquired a bullet that
caused an angel to spontaneously combust, Daimon Hellstrom brought
Blaze to Curtis to help identify the bullet. Immediately repulsed by
the stench in Curtis' Bronx home, Blaze nonetheless ventured inside
with Hellstrom, who offered Curtis a dozen from Fernando's Doughnuts in
exchange for Curtis identifying the bullet. Blaze questioned how the
blind Curtis could see the bullet but Curtis assured Blaze that eyes
would not see within. Curtis was then shown the bullet and Curtis
immediately sensed a strong vibration from it, remarking that Hellstrom
and Blaze were right to be concerned about it. Admitting his regret
that he could determine no other specific details, Curtis commented
that many old things were resurfacing as "the time" grew near and
suggested the two supernatural heroes visit the Wall Street Club to
find out more. Hellstrom then thanked Curtis for his time and the two
heroes departed. Once outside, Blaze asked who Curtis was and Hellstrom
replied that Curtis was a deserter in history's old war, sentenced to
his present existence.
(Spirits of Vengeance I#2) - Tasked with ferreting out any spies against his mission to acquire the enchanted silver pieces stolen by Necrodamus, Razan the Night Jackal visited the home of Curtis. Remarking that he should have known the visit from Hellstrom would not be the end of things, Curtis soon sensed the axe in Razan's hands and beckoned her to kill him, feeling as if she would be doing him a favor. Razan then raised her axe towards Curtis.
(Spirits of Vengeance I#3 - BTS) - While discussing some of his Wall
Street Club teammates being killed, Edwin also informed Daimon
Hellstrom that Curtis had gone missing.
Comments: Created by Victor Gischler and David Baldeon.
It wasn't explicitly stated what sort of mystical being Curtis was. Hellstrom stated that he was a deserter from history's oldest war, which seemed to be suggested as the war between Heaven and Hell. Hellstrom further mentions that Curtis was exiled to Earth for deserting the war and sentenced to live his existence as a morbidly obese blind man on Earth. So while it's not clear which side of the war Curtis was a part of, it is suggested that he is likely a fallen angel that was exiled to Earth. Since he was exiled to Earth and never actually in Hell, it doesn't seem as likely that he would have degenerated into a demon but it's also possible he could've been on Hell's side of the war and was already a demon before being exiled or something. We just aren't told enough to be sure...
Curtis may yet still be alive on Earth. While Spirits of Vengeance I#2 seemed to heavily suggest that Razan murdered Curtis with an axe, Spirits of Vengeance I#3 has Edwin mention that while his associate Agnes was dead, Curtis was only missing. Then again, it's possible Edwin simply didn't know that Curtis had been killed. This certainly leaves an opening for a future writer to bring Curtis if the writer had use of a smelly, morbidly obese mystic object identifier.
Curtis' eyes were never shown and
we only ever see a blindfold covering them. It's very possible that he
no longer has eyes after being exiled to Earth.
