History:
(Gunsmoke Western I#46/3) - The armed criminal who
came to be known as the Dakota Kid started small-scale with a shop
hold-up, but had grander plans to secure a reputation as a mean
thieving outlaw. But even that small-time robbery made him a wanted man
and justice began to steer toward him. Six months later, he held up a
stagecoach, stealing all the money, heartlessly laughing away that the
money was intended for an orphanage. Months continued as did his armed
hold-ups, along with the mounting bounty on his head.
By the end of the Dakota Kid's year of
robbery, a steely-eyed marshal followed the outlaw's trail. The Kid
soon realized he was being tracked, arrogantly happy with his
reputation, and shot at the lawman from afar before riding off. Weeks
passed and the slow pursuit continued until the opportunity for an
ambush presented itself to the Dakota Kid at a ravine. But the marshal
instinctively expected it and sent his riderless horse ahead while he
circled behind the outlaw. The marshal gave the Dakota Kid a chance to
surrender, but the outlaw drew his guns instead and was gunned down.
The Dakota Kid was buried in a basic grave with only his moniker on a
timber marker.

Presumably he wandered around Dakota County, which is how he received that name. It's unclear if he took that name or it was applied to him.
