(Marvel Graphic Novel: Wolverine & Nick Fury:
The Scorpio Connection (fb) - BTS) - David
Nanjiwarra was an Australian Aborigine who grew up in Arnhem Land, at
the tip of Australia's Northern Territories. As an adult he joined
SHIELD, traveling the world on various missions as an international spy.
Despite being an excellent operative he was plagued with bad luck, with
many missions proving to be dead ends.
With SHIELD investigating the Swift Sword
terrorist network David was put in charge of a five man anti-terrorist
unit sent to Machu Picchu in Peru, using the cover of an archaeological
expedition while following up a lead against on Swift Sword. However,
after a week all they had to show were eight negative reports filed to
headquarters in the States. Anticipating that orders would soon come in
to pack things up and tired after several long years in a frustrating
business, David decided to quit as soon as the mission was complete.
Unfortunately for him, the investigation had apparently gotten closer
than he'd realized, prompting Swift Sword to send the assassin Scorpio
to eliminate the SHIELD team.
(Marvel Graphic
Novel: Wolverine & Nick Fury: The Scorpio Connection) -
With the new morning David checked in with one of his team, Lars, to see
if they might have miraculously actually found anything of interest, and
was told that the nearest thing was that this morning's pot of coffee
was actually drinkable. The sudden crash of their security net prompted
David to call over to the two members of the team furthest away from him
to check the generator, but they groused about doing so in the middle of
their first decent coffee. A split second later both men were blasted by
some kind of violent energy discharge. Shouting to the others to get
down, David threw himself prone, and thus survived as the last two
members of his team (one of whom was Lars) suffered the same fate.
Reasoning that whatever had killed his men was too powerful and accurate
to be a gun, David realized he was facing someone with higher
technology. Figuring from the sweep and direction of fire that he was
facing a single opponent who would have to come down to confirm his
kills, David waited until he figured the assassin would be getting near,
then triggered a grenade and ran. As it detonated, David planned to
circle round to get behind the assassin while his ears were still
ringing from the explosion, determined to end the Nanjiwarra bad luck
and get the person who had murdered his colleagues. However Scorpio had
avoided David's trap, and only moments later blasted David, killing him
instantly. After confirming his kills, the assassin left a small plastic
disc adorned with a scorpion design on David's head, a calling card
telling SHIELD who had slain their men.
Comments: Created by Archie Goodwin and Howard Chaykin.
We never see David in a good stance near
someone with an established height - the nearest we get is when he's a
corpse lying at Scorpio's feet. He doesn't look tiny in comparison to
Scorpio, so my best guesstimate, and it is very much a guesstimate, is
that he's of similar height.
