Mutant Heroes: Chance profile) - The Fallen Angels were a gang of
socially misfit teenagers, many of them super-powered mutants,
initially recruited by the criminal mutant Vanisher (who was
disappointed after being abandoned by his previous teams) to commit
petty theft for his benefit. With no specific purpose in practice,
and definitely no interest in super-hero or super-villain feat, the
Fallen Angels stayed together to enjoy each other's company, support
each other and obtain some security, in a Manhattan squatted place
called the Beat Street Club supplied with arcade games, books,
jukebox, futons and posters.

Planetary leader Unipar developed a plan to send Ariel on a well-paid mission to capture mutants on Earth, which at the time showed a super-abundance of mutants. Unipar's purpose was for his scientists to study these mutants to isolate and duplicate what made them genetically unique.
(Fallen Angels I#8 (fb) -
BTS) - Without Ariel knowing, Unipar planned to dissect or torture
these mutants if necessary.
Unbeknowsnt to Unipar andAriel, Ariel herself was a mutant with mind control powers, as her race had naturally unlocked their genetic impasse.
(Fallen Angels I#1 (fb) / Fallen Angels I#2 (fb) / Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Update'89#2 Chance profile / Gamer's Handbook of the Marvel Universe Vol 1#1 Chance profile / Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z Update#3 Ariel profile / X-Men: Earth's Mutant Heroes, Chance profile) - Chance, a street-smart thirteen-year-old South Korean girl without American citizenship and a runaway on the streets of New York, unknowingly had the mutant power to affect other people's mutant powers by stimulating or suppressing them at random intervals. Chance became Ariel's friend, confidant and accomplice in the secret plan to recruit mutants, in exchange for a part of her profit. Cynically, Chance did not want to know what would happen to the mutants in Coconut Grove.

Ariel hid her alien origin from Vanisher, but not her learned ability to create portals between any two places that had doors, even on different planets. Ariel and Chance decided to work together so that the new recruits would mainly be mutants.
(Fallen Angels I#3 (fb) / X-Factor I#11) - Boom Boom left the group willingly. The group thought Boom Boom had been apprehended by the mutant hunters X-Factor; but X-Factor were only pretending to be anti-mutants and were secretly helping Boom Boom.

Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z I#14 Bill and Don
profile / X-Men: Earth's Mutant Heroes, Chance profile / Civil War:
Battle Damage Report) - The Fallen Angels traveled to a research
facility near Coney Island on a membership drive to recruit their
three cyborg occupants: The mutant green lobster Don,
the blue lobster Bill,
, both with superior strength and intelligence; and the teenage
genius Gomi
(Alphonsus Lefszycic), with telekinetic powers. Approached by the
Fallen Angels, Gomi and the lobsters voted two to one to join the
group.
Ariel and Chance were, however, more interested
in mutant members.
(Fallen Angels I#2 / Fallen Angels I#3 / Fallen Angels I#4 / Fallen Angels I#5 / Fallen Angels I#7) - The Fallen Angels had loose rules set by Vanisher, which Chance found unfairly favoring some people more than others. Groups of two Angels were sent out to steal food - sometimes a single group that frequently included Chance; and sometimes several groups if more food was needed. In these cases, Chance would favor targeting members of Glorification Church. Other Angels not involved in the theft would set the table. Pranks between members were not discouraged, and some Angels insisted on helping innocent people in trouble if the occasion was right.
(Fallen Angels I#1 / Fallen
Angels I#2) - On the street, Chance mugged a member of Glorification
Church, but she was then assaulted by two thugs. Mutant superhero
Sunspot (Roberto DaCosta), who had just left his team New Mutants,
tried to save Chance, but his powers stopped working because of
Chance's own powers. While the robbers were beating Sunspot, Ariel
rescued Chance with one of her teleportation doors; but neither of
them dared to help Sunspot at that moment.
Sunspot was later rescued by another former New
Mutant, the alien mutant Warlock.
(Fallen Angels I#3 - BTS / Fallen Angels I#7 - BTS) - Safely at the Beat Street Club, Ariel and Chance understood that Sunspot was a mutant and decided to recruit him for their secret plans. They convinced the Angels to seek out and recruit Sunspot, with the excuse that they wanted to ensure that he had come out of his predicament unscathed.
(Fallen Angels I#2 / X-Factor I#74 / X-Factor I#75) - On Muir Island, Scotland, Multiple Man (Jamie Madrox) was drugged and impersonated by one of his duplicates, who sought to retain his independence. The duplicate travelled to the United States to visit the New Mutants with Doctor Moira MacTaggart and Siryn (Theresa Cassidy). The New Mutants were concerned that Sunspot and Warlock had left their home, so the duplicate and Siryn pounded the pavement looking for Sunspot.
(Fallen Angels I#2) - Gomi, Bill and Don temporarily stopped their search when the lobsters insisted on preventing the theft of a church. Gomi then found Sunspot in front of a seafood restaurant when the Madrox duplicate, accompanied by Siryn, drew attention to Sunspot. Gomi tried to convince Sunspot to join the Fallen Angels instead of returning with the New Mutants. Vanisher showed up to help Gomi, but Sunspot and Siryn, who knew Vanisher as a villain, were suspicious and both attacked him. Vanisher, scared and cowardly, disappeared. However, Ariel and Chance offered Sunspot a way out by teleporting him from the door of the restaurant. Sunspot, Warlock and another duplicate of Madrox that had just been generated followed Ariel to the Beat Street Club; Siryn and the Madrox pretending to be the original one stayed behind and resumed the search from scratch.
(Fallen Angels I#3 / X-Factor I#17 / Fallen Angels I#4) - Vanisher decided to rescue Boom Boom from the X-Factor base, although Chance and the lobsters were still angry at Boom Boom. Ariel succeeded on the rescue mission, mainly because Boom Boom was not a prisoner at all. Boom Boom, however, did not reveal to the Fallen Angels that X-Factor was a pro-mutant organisation.
(Fallen Angels I#4 - BTS / Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Update'89#1 Ariel profile) - Analyzing entertainment media, Ariel discovered two fascinating mutants from another world (Earth78411), huge tyrannosaurus-like Devil Dinosaur and his helpmate, hirsute humanoid Moon-Boy, who had visited Earth in the past. She decided that these mutants were very valuable and wanted to travel to their world to recruit them, even at the risk of losing some of the mutants in the Fallen Angels.
(Fallen Angels I#3 / Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Update'89#1 Ariel profile / Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Update'89#3 Fallen Angels profile) - Siryn and the alleged Madrox found the Beat Street Club. Siryn was angry with those present; Vanisher tried to calm her down, while Chance and Sunspot were more aggressive to her. In an attempt to distract them and calm their spirits, Ariel teleported the Fallen Angels and their guests to the Valley of the Flame on Earth-78411.
(Fallen Angels I#4 / X-Men: Earth's Mutant
Heroes, Chance profile) - Facing an onslaught of dinosaurs, Chance
was injured, and Sunspot protected her, impressing her -- although
she later tried to convince Ariel that it was not like that. Ariel
later joined with Chance, while Warlock and Sunspot looked for the
other Angels. Boom Boom, Gomi, the so-called Madrox and Siryn
regrouped and camped out, hunting an animal to eat.
Ariel and Chance found Vanisher, who in turn led them to the rest of the team by following the smell of food. During that encounter, the alleged Madrox used a portable version of mutant detector Cerebro to identify Ariel and Chance as latent mutants, but they denied being so, claiming that the machine was malfunctioning. Sunspot and Warlock arrived later, and finally Devil Dinosaur and Moon-Boy appeared. Although she had no common language with them, Ariel invited them to the team, overriding Vanisher's objections.
(Fallen Angels I#5) - Back
at the Beat Street Club with their new members, Ariel, Gomi, Warlock
and the lobsters search for a place big enough to host Devil
Dinosaur. Meanwhile, the powers of the other mutants went out of
control via the accidental use of Chance's power, causing arguments
and minor problems.
The situation calmed down when Gomi and her companions revealed an adjacent loading bay where they could keep the Dinosaur. At Vanisher's request, Chance lackadaisically cleaned the area.
(Fallen Angels I#5) -
Concerned that Devil Dinosaur was likely to have a hearty appetite,
Vanisher sent almost all the Angels in pairs to steal food,
including Ariel with Chance (who worked well together), Sunspot with
Warlock, and Boom Boom with Gomi and his lobsters (much to the
chagrin of the four of them).
Ariel and Chance scammed a fruit vendor at Glorification Church, after which Ariel asked Chance if the latter was fond of Sunspot; to prove otherwise, Chance played a prank on Sunspot, leaving him in trouble, naked at the YWCA.
Meanwhile, Boom Boom was distracted by another Madrox duplicate, who ignored her and tried to escape her only to be run over by a cyclist. This accident kept Boom Boom, Gomi and Bill busy, allowing Don to drift away.
(Fallen Angels I#5 / Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Update'89#3 Gomi profile / Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Update'89#3 Fallen Angels profile / Gamer's Handbook of the Marvel Universe Vol 1#5 Gomi profile) - Moon-Boy and Devil Dinosaur understood that their new companions were foraging and, in an attempt to fit in, they joined the activity. On their walk through town, Devil accidentally stepped on Don and killed him.
(Fallen Angels I#6 - BTS) - Don's death convinced Ariel that the Fallen Angels were in danger. Fearing that mutant-hunters such as Marauders or X-Factor were targeting the Fallen Angels, Ariel decided to take the Angels to the Coconut Grove as soon as possible.
(Fallen Angels I#6 / Gamer's Handbook of the Marvel
Universe Vol 1#5 Gomi profile / Marvel Pets Handbook, Bill and Don
profile / Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z I#14 Bill and
Don profile)- The grief-stricken Gomi and enraged Bill
arranged a funeral for Don. Sunspot and Warlock tried to encourage
Gomi, with later support from Moon-Boy and Siryn. Ariel, Boom Boom,
Chance, the Madrox duplicate and Vanisher only enjoyed the food,
ignoring Gomi; and Chance even made fun of Sunspot, only to be
scorned in turn.
The Madrox duplicate
insisted that his readings of Ariel and Chance identified them as
mutants. Meanwhile, Bill sneaked off to fight Devil Dinosaur in
revenge for Don's death; discovering this, Gomi tried to stop him.
Devil Dinosaur believed that Bill was trying to make amends, and
that allowed Bill to attack him by surprise. Gomi, Moon-Boy, Siryn
and Sunspot joined the fray to protect his allies; Gomi was
especially grateful and attracted to Siryn.
Reluctantly, Bill agreed to forgive Devil Dinosaur and honor Don's memory by helping others.
(Fallen Angels I#6 / Gamer's Handbook of the Marvel Universe Vol 1#1 Ariel profile / Gamer's Handbook of the Marvel Universe Vol 1#5 Gomi profile / Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Update'89#1 Ariel profile) - Due to a new use of Chance's power, the mutant powers of the Fallen Angels temporarily disappeared. Vanisher wrongly concluded that they had been attacked by Marauders, X-Factor or another enemy and that their base was no longer safe. Ariel used the excuse to teleport the group to Coconut Grove.
(Fallen Angels I#7) The
Fallen Angels were greeted at Coconut Grove with a celebration, and
the natives gifted them with accessories, clothing and makeup, even
for a disinterested Chance; after that, Chance and Sunspot exchanged
cutting remarks.
After the fun, Vanisher called them to a meeting where Ariel explained why he had brought them to Coconut Grove, implying that their mutant powers made them celebrities there. During the meeting, the Madrox duplicate insisted that Chance was a mutant and correctly theorized about her powers and the effect they had caused during their previous crisis.

Coconut Grove authorities, the Disruptors, apprehended the Fallen
Angels openly to use them in painful experiments, disregarding any
claims and neutralizing their mutant powers with dampeners - Gomi's
telekinesis proved insufficent against the superior number.
Unipar
insisted they arrested Chance too; Ariel initially protested because
Chance was her friend, but eventually Ariel submitted.
Unipar then arrested Ariel too, having identified her as a mutant as well.
(Fallen Angels I#8 / Official Handbook of
the Marvel Universe A-Z Update#3 Ariel profile / X-Men: Earth's
Mutant Heroes, Chance profile) - Bill the lobster and Boom Boom both
escaped capture. The Disruptors took their prisoners to cells where
their powers are dampened; except for Gomi, who was kept blindfolded
in a rotating pod. Boom Boom was soon captured and joined them.
The Disruptors tried to take the duplicate Madrox first for experiments, but he struggled, generating a new duplicate, who was then accidentally shot by the Disruptors. Unipar then recovered control by threatening to kill Gomi, who was useless for his plans, then took away all the Madrox duplicates and Sunspot. Once they left, Bill raided the prison, defeated the guards and released Gomi; Gomi then convinced Bill to release the others too, even Ariel - although she had betrayed the Angels and Chance was particularly angry at her, they all decided to give her a second chance.
(Fallen Angels I#8) - The Fallen Angels attacked the Disruptors to rescue Madrox and Sunspot, with Chance as the assault's tactical leader. They did rescue Sunspot and Madrox, but then Unipar gathered an army of Disruptors and threatened to shoot Chance.

/ X-Men: Earth's Mutant Heroes, Chance profile) - Risking her
personal safety, Ariel convinced Unipar to let the Fallen Angels
leave. She was supported by Sunspot (who gave arguments explaining
that Coconut Grove already had natural mutants, so there was no need
for the experiments) and by Chance (who boosted Ariel's persuasion
powers).
After Unipar yielded, the Fallen Angels returned to Earth.
(Fallen Angels I#8 / Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Update'89#3 Fallen Angels profile) - Once at the Beat Street Club, however, Chance rebuffed Vanisher's orders to steal food and instead suggested they earn money honorably. Sunspot and Warlock left the team in good terms to return to the New Mutants; but Madrox and Siryn decided to remain with the Fallen Angels.
(Fallen Angels II#2 (fb)) - Originally living in Hawaii, Pan Halehone was a mutant able to telepathically control animals. Unfortunately this drew the interest of the Broker, a criminal mastermind who was gathering mutant children for his own ends. He kidnapped Pan, but Pan later escaped onto the streets of NYC.
(Fallen Angels II#1/Uncanny X-Men Annual I#15/1 (fb) - BTS) - Siryn left the team to return to Muir Island,...
(Fallen Angels II#1) - bidding Madrox a tearful farewell. Bill and Gomi held a wake for Don, while Moon Boy introduced Devil to MTV. Nearby to Beat Street Pan was found by the Broker's operatives; sensing his cries for help, Devil led the Fallen Angels to Pan's rescue, and afterwards he joined their ranks.
(Fallen Angels II#2) -
Pan tried to rescue the Broker's other victims by himself but
instead was almost recaptured; luckily the other Fallen Angels,
alerted to Pan's plight by Moon Boy, intervened, rescuing both Pan
and the other mutant kids.
(Fallen Angels II later
issues) - The Angels attended a rock concert and discovered
musician P.J. James was a mutant. They continued to fight the
Broker and his minions, as the villain had not given up his desire
to own Pan.
(X-Factor I#22 / Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Update'89#3 Fallen Angels profile) - Boom Boom left the Fallen Angels and returned to X-Factor.
(Fantastic Four I#335 - BTS/ Fantastic Four
I#336 - BTS) - During the Acts
of Vengeance, as a part of a higher plan, Doctor Doom had
manipulated Vanisher and other villains with an aggression enhancer
so they would attack the Fantastic Four. Vanisher was seen in the
U.S. Capitol, Washington, D.C., attacking guest speakers Fantastic
Four along with fellow supervillains Eel (Edward Lavell), Mad Dog
(Robert Baxter) and Thunderball (Eliot Franklin); the villains were
defeated but Vanisher escaped.
Apparently, Vanisher was no longer involved with the Fallen Angels
at that point.
(Uncanny X-Men Annual I#15/3) - Extradimensional media mogul Mojo researched about Fallen Angels and other X-Men spin-off groups, generating artistic holograms of them, for a movie called "The Origin of the X-Men." Mojo later discarded the footage.
(X-Factor I#75) - The Madrox impersonator also left the Fallen Angels and returned to Muir Island. He eventually told MacTaggart about his adventures with the Fallen Angels more than once.
(New Warriors I#29) - Vanisher was next seen solo tracking Silhouette Chord to find if Chord's powers were related to his.
(X-Factor Annual I#8/2) - As the government has hired former Fallen Angel Madrox, the team's activities were listed in a dossier available for high-ranking officers.
(Marvel Comics Presents I#161/1) - Devil Dinosaur and Moon-Boy apparently returned to their own world without the Fallen Angels.
(Gamer's Handbook of the Marvel Universe Vol 1#1 Ariel profile / Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z Update#3 Ariel profile) - After the team's total break-up, Ariel decided to explore Earth's so-called wild side, eventually moving to San Francisco.
(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Update'89#2 Chance profile / Marvel Pets Handbook, Bill and Don profile / Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z I#14 Bill and Don profile / X-Men: Earth's Mutant Heroes, Chance profile / Avengers: No Road Home#9) - The core team was formed only by Chance, Gomi and Bill by that point. Gomi and Bill caught Anthony Stark's interest as potential recruits for the Initiative. Both were seen with a team called Avengers World during a crisis. Chance's activities, or even whether she retained her superpowers after "M-Day", are unrevealed.
Comments: Created by Jo Duffy and Kerry Gammill.
The Fallen Angels as a team have a profile in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Update'89#3.
In Fallen
Angels I#2, Ariel and Chance escape while Sunspot is being
mugged. After they were gone, Warlock arrived and rescued Sunspot.
Meanwhile, Ariel and Chance convinced the Fallen Angels to find and
recruit "Sunspot and his friend," per Gomi's word in the
same issue. However, Ariel and Chance had left before Warlock
appeared; it is not explained how they even know of Sunspot's
friend.
Maybe Ariel was
secretly watching him via some door/portal?--Snood
In Fallen Angels I#5, after Ariel and Chance played a prank on Sunspot leaving him naked at the YWCA, he decided to get even on them, although he apparently never did this on-panel.
Gamer's Handbook of the Marvel Universe has profiles on Ariel and Chance (both in #1) and Gomi (in #5). All of these say "Base of operations: Mobile", although the Fallen Angels have a base in the clubhouse, as explained in all the Fallen Angels-related entries in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Update'89.
Chance's profile in Gamer's Handbook also says that she was believed to be the only member without superhuman powers in the Fallen Angels; but Ariel was also insisting she had no powers.
Gomi's profile in Gamer's Handbook says that Devil Dinosaur joined the team when they traveled to the past. We now know that the Angels did not travel to the past, but to an alternate universe where Devil lives.
As confirmed by Marvel Age Annual#2, the comic and team were originally intended to be called the Misfits. The group had in-house advertisements in various titles before the title change. Also per the info in Marvel Age Annual#2, Fallen Angels was originally planned to be six issues (not eight), and they were considering including Impossible Man, though it's unclear if they mean as a team member or just a guest star.
Additionally, as revealed in Back
Issue#21, there was a follow-up miniseries planned, written again by
Jo Duffy, but with Colleen Doran taking over as the main artist, with
inks by Terry Austin. With Sunspot and Warlock already back with the
New Mutants, Siryn was intended to leave the series in the first issue
and a new mutant, Pan Halehone, a Hawaiian able to telepathically
communicate with animals, was to join. This new recruit was being
pursued by a villain called the Broker who was kidnapping mutant
children that the team would rescue - from the art, the other kids
were much younger than Pan, which is presumably why they didn't end up
joining the Angels too. Additionally the Fallen Angels were going to
meet P.J.
James, who Duffy and Doran had introduced in a Marvel Fanfare
story, and learn that he was a mutant whose power made him a genius
player with any musical instrument.
However, Marvel apparently grew unhappy at
the scripts, feeling the tone switched back and forth between silly
and extremely serious too much. They decided to replace Duffy, but
when they asked Doran if she'd continue the project with another
writer she decided to be loyal to her friend and say no. Despite two
issues being completely drawn (just needing coloring apparently) and
the third partially done, Marvel chose to cut its losses and drop the
series entirely.
As far as I can tell, nothing that was planned contradicts anything we've subsequently seen, so I'm personally happy to consider that the events of the series still happened off panel. As such, they are included in the history, enemies and affiliations, but in italics. --Loki
