History:
(Shatterstar I#1 (fb) - BTS) - One hundred years in
the future in the Mojoverse was genetically engineered to be a
high-performing gladiator in the fighting arena, gaining growing
adulation from crowds. She was marketed as the Smiling Executioner.
(Shatterstar I#1 (fb)) - After finishing a stadium of foes for entertainment on Mojoworld, a new gladiator Shatterstar rose to the cheers of the crowd when Gringrave ran in as the next challenger. She quickly overpowered him and was ready to bloodily slay him for the audience but realized that the crowds cheered for him as much as they did for her. Seizing the opportunity for greater popularity, she forced a kiss on him, and made him her partner and protege.
(Shatterstar I#2 (fb)) - As a couple, the duo were unbeatable in the arena and incredibly popular, much to media mogul Mojo V's delight. During intimacy between matches, thinking he'd found love, Shatterstar told her of his feelings for her; instead, she pushed him away, telling him to follow her philosophy: never to love anything that others could use against you.
(Shatterstar I#3 (fb)) - Fellow gladiator Sovereignshard hoped to free Shatterstar from servitude and lure him to the rebel Cadre Alliance before the next day's bout. But the manipulative Gringrave had secretly edited the footage to make it appear that Sovereignshard would be coming to kill Shatterstar in a crime of passion and showed it to him, saying that she had been assigned to kill Windsong (Shatterstar's betrothed) in the next arena fight.
(Shatterstar I#4 (fb)) - Gringrave watched secretly
nearby as Shatterstar killed Sovereignshard and the rebels, not
realizing their true mission. She applauded after and revealed the
truth to Shatterstar as her final lesson that sometimes justification
is needed for a gladiator to fight.
(Shatterstar I#1 (fb) - BTS) - The relationship between the manipulative Gringrave and Shatterstar ended in tears and pain.
Much later,
Shatterstar had finally escaped Mojo for Reality-616 and became
romantically involved with fellow adventurer Rictor. Shatterstar
eventually set
up Manor Crossing, a sanctuary house in New York City for
interdimensional outcasts,
including Tina Cooke, Crimzor, End Woman, Goldon, Night
Thrasher and Pug-Smasher, but pushed Rictor away emotionally.
(Shatterstar I#2 (fb) - BTS) - Meanwhile, Gringrave had left the gladiator pits, along with other mercenaries from Mojoworld to work for Grandmaster of Reality-616, supplying gladiatorial entertainment to the Horusians of Horus IV.
(Shatterstar I#4 (fb) - BTS) - Gringrave set in
motion an elaborate plot to lure Shatterstar to Horus IV for the
Grandmaster's amusement.
(Shatterstar I#1) - Using Timeslot's time portal, Gringrave led the Death Sponsors to violently kidnap Manor Crossing's tenants as bait for Shatterstar while he was out.
(Shatterstar I#4 (fb) - BTS) - Gringrave killed Timeslot and left Night Thrasher-90214 alive long enough to provide a clue to Shatterstar and unite him briefly with Rictor to encourage a dramatic pursuit.
(Shatterstar I#2) - Gringrave and the Death Sponsors
engaged the Dockmaster and the Longshoremen for instant interstellar
transport to Horus IV with their victims. Shatterstar and Rictor arrived but were too late to stop the Star Dock portal,
although Dockmaster's threat was ended. With barely seconds to spare,
Shatterstar jumped through the Star Dock.
(Shatterstar I#3) - Gringrave led the Death Sponsors
and the kidnapees to the amphitheater to be prepared for battle, while
Shatterstar fought his way elsewhere to the amphitheater. Gringrave
watched happily as the newly enhanced but inexperienced Tina Cooke died
quickly in the arena.
(Shatterstar I#4) - Garbed and armed in new
gladiatorial raiment, Gringrave strutted into the arena after seeing
Shatterstar kill the last of her Death Sponsor agents (Cancellator,
Lead-In, Sweep Zweak). Gringrave revealed her manipulations to
Shatterstar as they fiercely dueled, stating that Shatterstar had
betrayed her and all her lessons as a gladiator and in emotional
distance. Despite the brutality, she claimed she loved him; Shatterstar
embraced her and fell backward on his sword, piercing both bodies, but
he knew he would survive. Her dying body bled out on the arena ground.
Comments: Created by Tim Seeley, Carlos Villa, Juan Vlasco.
Za's vid! Could the Grandmaster have resurrected her just prior to parading Shatterstar's past selves before the arena crowd? Did she have the same enhanced healing as Shatterstar? Or maybe, as the dying Tina Cooke noted in Shatterstar I#4, some characters are just bit players, not recurring and not leads.
Given genetically engineered Shatterstar's weight is lighter than would be expected for a human his build and height, I'll leave Gringrave's as unrevealed.
Earth-1218 is supposed to be the
real world that the readers live in. Writers love to use characters
from Earth-1218, but since we don't have any super-powers or
interdimensional portals, etc., as soon as some interaction with an
alternate reality or super-powered characters occurs, it becomes just
another previously "normal" reality that has since diverged.
So, despite the fact that it is repeatedly called
Earth-1218, I contend that it is a reality diverged from -1218; I may
address this in the future, but since it is called -1218 repeatedly in
the story, I'm not going to provide another reality designation at this
point.
