History:
(Mark Hazzard: Merc#1 (fb) - BTS) - Leonard Hazzard came from a family with a "fine military history," and he presumably attended West Point.
(Mark Hazzard: Merc Annual#1 (fb) - BTS) - Leonard Hazzard wanted his son, Mark, to be the best at everything, and he never settled for anything less.
(Mark Hazzard: Merc Annual#1 (fb)) - Leonard was annoyed when the young Mark disappointed him at baseball.
(Mark Hazzard: Merc Annual#1 (fb)) - Leonard was similarly annoyed with Mark's high school footbal performance, refusing to talk to him after a game.
(Mark Hazzard: Merc Annual#1 (fb)) - When Mark fell in love with his high school sweetheart, Joan, Leonard still wasn't satisfied.
(Mark Hazzard: Merc Annual#1 (fb)) - When Mark went to West Point, he proved to be good at a lot of things, and he was a cadet officer, but he wasn't the best, and Leonard couldn't accept any less.
(Mark Hazzard: Merc Annual#1 (fb)) - Unable to take his father's disappointment any further and deciding it was pointless trying to please him, Mark quit West Point, married Joan, and joined the army to serve in Vietnam as a noncomissioned officer.
(Mark Hazzard: Merc#1 (fb)) - When his son Mark announced his plans to drop out of West Point, Margaret asked Leonard to talk to Mark and tell them what he was doing to them. Leonard noted that Mark knew what he was doing but that he didn't give a "tinker's whatsis." Continuing that it wasn't enough to be a disgrace West Point and to the family's military history, but the fact that he would do this to his parents left him speechless. When Mark noted, "I doubt that, sir." Leonard told him "Don't crack wise with me, soldier," and then asked what his plans were after dropping out of West Point. When Mark answered that he was signing up for tour in Vietnam, Leonard was apalled that he would leave the Point to be a grunt, noting, "Trust you to be a disappointment." As Leonard walked out, Mark replied, "Yes, sir."
(Mark Hazzard: Merc#1 (fb) - BTS) - On his deathbed after having had a heart attack, Leonard told Margaret to tell Mark to follow in his footsteps and to be a good soldier."
(Mark Hazzard: Merc#1 (fb) - BTS) - After Mark had completed three tours in Vietnam, Margaret told Mark his father's last words, but Mark noted that if he had been there, he would have told him, "Dad, this soldier was cutting himself new orders" (becoming a mercenary).Comments: Created by Peter David and Gray Morrow.
The sliding timescale does not apply to the New Universe, and so the reference to Marc Hazzard touring in Vietnam is appropriate.
