History:
(Strange Tales I#50/3 (fb) - BTS) - General Karall was once the superior to Gorth, his military aide.
(Strange Tales I#50/3) - Some ten years later, the now-retired General Karall attempted to advise his former aide, who was now General Gorth. The Earth was facing an invasion by extraterrestrials from Xanu and had managed to halt the fleet in orbit by surrounding the planet with a dense fog which the Xanu crafts could not safely pierce. Karall sought an audience with General Gorth and offered to help break the stalemate between the Earth and the forces of Xanu. General Gorth impatiently declined to listen. Karall reminded Gorth that he was once his aide and followed his orders but Gorth insisted that time was over and ordered Karall to leave his office.
Unable to even present his plan to the military, General Karall set out to save the Earth himself. Taking control of one of the facilities which operated the Earth's fog screen, Karall contacted the fleet from Xanu and told them he would create an opening in the fog so that the fleet could invade Earth. In return, he demanded gold from Xanu. The invaders agreed and Karall shut down one of the fog machines. As the fleet from Xanu raced through the opening Karall had made, two soldiers apprehended Karall for betraying the Earth. The soldiers raised the fog again but the fleet had already poured through the opening. However, they came through with such speed and intent to land on the surface they were unprepared to find themselves over the North Atlantic Ocean, just as Karall had intended. The invaders were unable to halt their descent and crashed into the ocean, wiping out the entire fleet. General Gorth thanked General Karall for saving the Earth as Karall admitted he had done well for a "silly old man."

This was a somewhat early Steve Ditko story so his art might look a little different than what you're used to.

CLARIFICATIONS:
General Karall should not be confused with:
General Gorth (right) was a ranking officer, Colonel Jabor (left) his aide.
General Gorth was the military leader of Earth's High Command defenses against the invasion from Xanu. Colonel Jabor was Gorth's chief aide. In the past, Gorth had been aide to General Karall. General Gorth oversaw the screen of fog which surrounded the Earth in order to ward off the Xanu invaders but it did nothing more than create a stalemate which Earth's forces seemingly could not break. The retired General Karall attempted to offer advice to his former aide but General Gorth was short-tempered and had no patience to listen to the "silly" advice of his former superior. Karall went on to enact his plan without military approval and succeeded in tricking the Xanu invaders into following an opening in the fog directly into the North Atlantic Ocean, where the entire fleet perished. General Gorth apologized to General Karall for not listening to him.
--Strange Tales I#50/3
The people of Xanu were an extraterrestrial race who appeared very similar in appearance to humans. They came to conquer the Earth with a fleet of advanced vessels but were unable to pierce the fog which surrounded the planet. As they waited in orbit, they were contacted by General Karall, who pretended to be a traitor and offered to open part of the fog in exchange for gold from the invaders. The men from Xanu agreed to his terms and sent their entire fleet through the opening he created but they expected to land upon the surface and instead found themselves above the North Atlantic Ocean. Unable to halt their descent in time, the invaders crashed into the ocean, where the entire invasion fleet perished.
