LANDSCAPE
Real Name: Brett (surname/last name unrevealed)
Identity/Class: Human mutant
Occupation: Bounty Hunter
Group Membership: None
Affiliations: Grovel, Magneto (Max Eisenhardt), Spat
Enemies: Gambit (Remy LeBeau), Joseph (biomatrix replicant/"Clone" of Magneto/Max Eisenhardt), Rogue (Anna Marie);
while he did not directly encounter Beast (Hank
McCoy) or Trish Tilby, they were affected by his holographic alien
environmen, which caused confusion and delay
Known Relatives: None
Aliases: "Gumbo head" (from Gambit)
Base of Operations: Unrevealed
First Appearance: (Strictly behind-the-scenes (holographic environment shown)) Uncanny X-Men I#346 (August, 1997)
(seen and identified) Uncanny X-Men I#347 (September, 1997)
Powers/Abilities: Landscape can create holographic environments, such as making a cave appear to be an alien world. Electromagnetic energy channeled into one of his holograms causes a painful backlash for him.
It is unrevealed if the pictured form, which makes his skin look like canvas splattered with various colors of pain, is his true form. The fact that this is the form he held after suffering an energy backlash makes me think that it was more likely his true form.
Landscape is verbose but cowardly.
He is content to do a job for profit without knowing the reasons behind
what he is doing, and he typically cowers when threatened.
Height: Unrevealed (he is not pictured
standing but rather in a series of awkward positions; when Rogue is
carrying him (or throttling him), he looks like he's maybe a couple
inches taller than her, so perhaps 5'10")
Weight: Unrevealed (perhaps 160 lbs.)
Eyes: Solid white
Hair: None
Note: It would seem likely that
Landscape could use holography to alter his own appearance, but it may
be that he can only affect the outside environment.
History:
(Uncanny X-Men I#347 (fb) - BTS) - Gambit had knowledge of and experience with Landscape, for whom he had little respect.
(Uncanny X-Men I#350 (fb) - BTS) - As "Erik the Red," Magneto hired Spat and her bounty hunter associates Grovel and Landscape to capture Gambit and bring him in for a trial (or, possibly, Magneto hired Spat and Grovel, and they in turn employed.
(Uncanny X-Men I#347 (fb) - BTS) - A group of X-Men (Beast, Gambit, Joseph, Rogue) and their ally Trish Tilby arrived
(due to a damaged stargate following a space adventure involving the
Phalanx) on Earth near Magneto's Antarctic citadel, and they were
separated: Rogue ended up with Joseph, Beast with Trish Tilby, and
Gambit was left alone.
Under direction from Grovel and Spat, Landscape used his powers to make the cavern containing the X-Men appear to be an an alien world.
(Uncanny X-Men I#346 - BTS) - As Gambit wondered at being in this seemingly alien world, Grovel approached him from behind.
(Uncanny X-Men I#347 - BTS) - Spat and Grovel
took custody of Gambit. Beast and Trish Tilby prepared to investigate
the seemingly alien terrain.
(Uncanny X-Men I#347) - After Rogue crashed into a wall, Joseph used his electromagnetic powers to disrupt the illusion, which also incapacitated Landscape. When Joseph confronted and questioned Landscape, he offered his codename and his powers, but noted that he was a "worker bee" and that he didn't get paid enough to know why he had been instructed to make them believe they were on some other planet.
As Rogue carried Landscape down into the cavern,
Landscape noted that they had come down there, beat him down, and
everybody had a good laugh, but that he really had to get going as he
wasn't one of the "rugged save the world and free the whales types" as
he had to work for a living.
While Joseph became annoyed by Landscape's verbosity and advised silence, unless he intended to explain where they were or why they were there; Joseph further noted, "A pity you're not paid by the word."
Landscape continued to taunt his captors verbosely until he mentioned the mission to turn over Gambit to...at which point he stopped and realized his mistake just before Rogue grabbed him by the neck. As Landscape noted that he meant to say, "Hamlet," Gambit interrupted. While breaking free, Gambit assured his former captors they would accompany them anyway. When Joseph confronted Landscape, he told "Smiley" that pounding on him wouldn't help anything, after which they were confronted by the robotic Nanny, who promised to take them in...forever..."
(Uncanny X-Men I#348 - BTS) - Nanny neutralized the X-Men, Spat, and Grovel's powers and captured them. Landscape was not seen.
Comments: Created by Scott Lobdell, Joe Madureira, Tim Townsend, Eric Cannon, & Al Milgrom.
Gambit had past knowledge of Landscape, knowing his real first name, and called him a gumbo head, which MAY indicate Landscape is also from New Orleans...or it may just mean that Gambit was using a familiar term to describe Landscape as an idiot.
Presumably Nanny had little regard for Landscape,
and she either ignored him altogether or neutralized his powers and
ignored him. But, either way, she apparently left without him after
capturing the others, and he apparently did nothing to oppose this.
