(Avengers I#259 (fb) - BTS) - At one point, Levan and Gunthar were both underlings of Thanos. How they joined up with the Mad Titan's forces has not been revealed.

(Avengers I#259 (fb) - BTS) - After the destruction of the Skrull Imperial Throneworld by Galactus triggered a civil war that tore the Skrull Empire apart, a female mercenary who called herself Nebula began to gather a great mercenary army whose warriors were outcasts of a thousand worlds from several galaxies, including the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy. Under Nebula's leadership, world after world fell to her army.

(Avengers I#255 (fb) - BTS) - At some point following Thanos' apparent death (circa Marvel Two-In-One Annual#2), Levan joined Nebula's mercenary force.

(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe II#9: Nebula entry) - Levan, Gunthar, Kehl and Skunge became some of Nebula's most trusted aides.

(Avengers I#259 (fb) - BTS) - At some point, Commander Nebula contacted Gorth, the governor of a Skrull colony, and offered to make him emperor if he would pay her price. Gorth agreed.

(Avengers I#259 (fb) - BTS) - At some point, Nebula tried to conquer the asteroid that was the base for the Skrull Imperial Armada. When its acting commander, General Zedrao, refused to surrender to her, Nebula tried to destroy the base but was unable to penetrate its defenses. Nebula left after vowing to return and reduce the base to dust.

(Avengers I#255 (fb) - BTS / Avengers I#259 (fb) - BTS) - Nebula sent Levan, Gunthar, Kehl and Skunge to Earth's solar system to find Sanctuary II, reactivate its hyperspace drive, and bring it back to her. Levan and Gunthar were sent because Nebula believed that the fact that they were former underlings of Thanos would make them useful for this mission.

(Avengers I#252 - BTS) - As part of his plan to empty Avengers Mansion so that he would be free to carry out his takeover of the world, the Vision told Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau) that the Avengers deep space monitor had picked up some disturbing signals emanating from Sanctuary II, the starship that had once belonged to Thanos that the Avengers had left drifting beyond the orbit of Pluto. The Vision asked her to fly out to inspect the ship and report back to him. Monica agreed and soon started out on her 4.9 billion mile trip.

(Avengers I#255 - BTS) - "Seven hours" later, Captain Marvel arrived at Sanctuary II and was able to get past its automatic defense shields and into the giant starship. After making sure that the life support system was functional, Marvel turned back into her human form and checked out the starship's hyperspatial communications gear. Finding nothing that would have produced the signal that the Vision claimed had been detected, Marvel contacted Avengers Mansion and reported this to the Vision. After the Vision had confessed his deception and the reason for it and Marvel had spoken with Captain America, she ended their chat and left the communications chamber without noticing an alert that had begun to flash on a console behind her. The flashing light was accompanied by text on an indicator that read (in alien glyphs) "VESSEL DOCKING...SECTION C..."

(Avengers I#255) - After reaching Sanctuary II, Levan, Gunthar, Kehl and Skunge were able to dock their vessel in one of its hangar decks. Soon afterwards, Captain Marvel just happened to come across that same hangar and began to wander through it. Skunge came across her first and attacked but was soon disarmed, then Kehl came to help but was also outmatched. As an enraged Kehl prepared to resume his attack, Levan and Gunthar arrived on the scene. Once Gunthar had used his mind-thrust on the Taurian, inducing enough pain to subdue Kehl, Levan began to smooth talk Marvel, first by asking that she forgive them for the unfortunate incident because he and his associates had been wandering space for so long, and then by claiming that Skunge and Kehl had overreacted when they found someone aboard a vessel that had once belonged to the "mad-god Thanos." After Levan asked the "boys" to apologize, Kehl and Skunge quickly did so, and, with the violence now over, Levan introduced himself and Gunthar to the alien who identified herself as Captain Marvel of Earth's Avengers. When Marvel asked what they were doing there, Levan claimed that, several months earlier, their ship's navigational computers had malfunctioned and they had bounced from star to star. Gunthar then added that they had chanced upon Sanctuary II which they had heard had been abandoned after Thanos had been defeated, then Levan admitted that they had sneaked aboard, hoping to use its equipment to get their bearings and make repairs. Captain Marvel agreed to help them.

   Later, in another chamber, after Gunthar told the captain that the navigation station he was operating would allow him to recalibrate their equipment without too much trouble, Levan added that he was opening a relay circuit to their ship and that Gunthar could transmit at any time. Skunge reacted to the code phrase by doing something meant to be seen as suspicious by Marvel who turned into light to speed to his side. However, once Marvel had taken the bait and moved away from him, Gunthar pressed a button that activated the starship's hyperspace drive and caused Marvel to turn human against her will. Marvel then grabbed Skunge and demanded to know what was going on, but Gunther and Levan, with their weapons drawn, told her that threatening them would be unwise. Marvel reminded them that their weapons couldn't hurt her, but Levan corrected her, stating that that was only when she was in an energy state while the hyper-jump they had just taken after activating the hyperspace drive had left her body too disrupted to change for at least several minutes. When Levan then challenged her to let Skunge go or prove him wrong, Marvel released the Laxidazian. Levan and Gunthar subsequently made her an offer, suggesting that she could join the mercenary force of which they were a part and that someone with her talents could go far in their organization. When Marvel replied that she would rather blow the starship to smithereens, Levan advised her not to do that because the hyper-jump had taken them to another galaxy and it would take her a few million years to fly home on her own powers.

(Avengers I#256 (fb) - BTS) - The four aliens locked Captain Marvel in a room to keep her out of their way and give her time to reconsider their offer.

(Avengers I#256) - Hours later, Levan brought Captain Marvel some breakfast and made another attempt to persuade her to join their mercenary group. When Marvel again refused to join, Levan asked her to reconsider, saying that, even if her powers didn't return, he was sure that they could find a position for her. Now angry, Marvel demanded that he get out and Levan complied, leaving without having noticed that Marvel had actually been in her hologram form throughout their conversation. When Skunge, who had been waiting outside the room, asked if Marvel was "throwin' in" with them, Levan replied that she wasn't yet, then added that she would come around because they all did, eventually. Meanwhile, Marvel was pleased that she had managed to fool "that skunk Levan" so completely.

(Avengers I#257) - Later that day, as Nebula's flagship approached Sanctuary II, Levan was on the central control deck using the starship's internal communications system to talk with Gunthar who was on the hangar deck awaiting Nebula's arrival. When Gunthar stated that he would conduct Nebula to the central control deck forthwith, Levan mentally bemoaned the fact that Nebula was always so punctual but told Gunthar that they would be ready. 

    As Levan thought to himself that he hoped they would be ready and wondered where "those two fools" were with the Earthwoman, Skunge and Kehl arrived with the captive Captain Marvel, with Skunge calling out to Levan that here was his "Little Miss High-and-Mighty!" Levan immediately resumed his attempt to win over Marvel, asking that she forgive Skunge because he was a Laxidazian troll and they were not known for their good manners. Levan seemed to be making some progress at convincing Marvel to join them, but when he put his hands on her shoulders she pulled away and told him to keep his hands to himself...if he wanted to keep them at all! Levan replied, "Ha! You have spirit, Marvel -- I like that in a woman!"  However, when Nebula, who had arrived on the deck unnoticed, asked Levan if that was so, he quickly responded, "Ulp! N-Nebula! I didn't mean --!" Nebula replied that he never did, and then Gunthar told her that the woman threatening Levan with the loss of manual dexterity called herself Captain Marvel. 

    Nebula stated that that was an impressive name and that she had been told some equally impressive things about her abilities and how sad it was that her trip through hyperspace had stolen them away. And then, without warning, she fired a shot from her wrist-blaster at Marvel who turned herself into light to avoid getting hit. As the two woman faced off, with each feeling that the other was a clever opponent, Nebula asked if Marvel was interested in joining her organization, and Marvel claimed that she might, now that she knew who was in charge, because she didn't like to deal with underlings. This prompted Levan to object, saying, "Now, just a moment --!" but Nebula told him to be silent and then told Marvel that she was consolidating forces that were going to conquer what was left of the Skrull Empire!

(Avengers I#258) - "Days" later, Levan and Gunthar were on the central control deck as Sanctuary II approached the asteroid swarm in which the intergalactic staging base for the Imperial Skrull armada was located. Once Nebula had sent Captain Marvel off to scout the base's fortifications, Levan pointed out that they already had plenty of data on that base and asked why she had sent Marvel. Nebula replied that she didn't trust Marvel for a moment and wanted to see if the Skrulls could eliminate her before they eliminated the Skrulls!

   Several minutes later, after Captain Marvel had blown a big hole in the Skrull base's outer defense web, Nebula ordered Levan to stand by to launch an anti-matter torpedo. Levan was confused by the order and began to protest, but Gunthar interrupted him to say that he shared Levan's reluctance because the base could be useful to them and asked if Nebula really wanted to obliterate it. Nebula replied, "yes" and ordered the torpedo to be launched. Soon afterwards, Levan, Gunthar and Nebula all listened to the beginning of a message that Captain Marvel was trying to send to the Avengers on Earth. When Levan reported that he could slow the hyperspatial transmission but that the signal was too strong to jam completely, Nebula assured him that the message would be cut off at its source in a matter of seconds. Once that time had elapsed, Levan, Gunthar and Nebula all witnessed the massive explosion caused when the anti-matter torpedo struck positive matter.

(Avengers I#259) - In the aftermath of the explosion, Levan and Gunthar were on the bridge with Nebula observing the devastated planetoid on the viewscreen. When Nebula asked what the range was, Levan replied, "Twenty decans and closing! Senti-probe scans show no signs of life on the base. Not a single Skrull warrior has survived!" Gunther then added that neither had the Earthwoman, Captain Marvel! Despite this, Nebula ordered another scan which led to Levan reporting, "Second scan complete, Nebula...Same results as before. There's nothing left alive down there!" Nebula remained skeptical that a single anti-matter torpedo could have totally obliterated all of the ships in the vast armada, and speculated that at least some of them must have escaped, prompting Levan to ask, "Including, perhaps, Captain Marvel --?" When Nebula quickly asked if he'd like that, Levan, asked, with a stutter, "Wh-what do you mean?" and Nebula began to berate him for how he constantly wasted his energies with one-sided romantic pursuits. She reminded him that he and Gunthar, as former underlings of Thanos, had been most useful in securing the ship but then asked if he was of any further use to her, declaring that if he were not willing to give her his full, undivided loyalty, then there was no room for him in her mercenary force...or in life! 

    Taking the hint, Levan immediately pleaded with her, saying, "Nebula, let me assure you that you have my support...my undying support...in this galaxy or any other!" Gunthar then agreed, saying that only a fool would do otherwise. Seemingly satisfied, Nebula then ordered the complete destruction of the base planetoid. Once that was done, Nebula ordered Gunthar to take them out of there because there was much yet for them to do, and Gunthar obeyed.

(Avengers I#259 - BTS / Avengers I#260 (fb) - BTS) - Levan was presumably aboard Sanctuary II during the next week as it traveled to Governor Gorth's colony, wiping out the world of Xandar, its Champions and its people along the way.

(Avengers I#259) - After arriving at Governor Gorth's colony, Levan accompanied Nebula when she descended to the surface to meet with Gorth. As they entered the throne room, Nebula greeted "Governor Gorth" and told him that she had news of great successes but Gorth, who had assumed a more imposing form, told her to address him as "Emperor Gorth" and to remember that he was the one who was paying her. Not impressed by his attitude, Nebula ordered Levan to cut him down to size, so Levan shot Gorth with an energy blast that caused him to revert to his true form. Once a cowed Gorth had admitted that he was nothing without her, Nebula took him out on the balcony to show him Sanctuary II, the weapon she had brought him that would make his backwater planet the next Skrull Throneworld!

   Later, while Nebula was showing the very impressed Governor Gorth around Sanctuary II, Levan contacted her via a two-way viewscreen and reported, "Your suspicions were correct, Nebula! Deep probes have picked up traces of the imperial armada!" Gorth immediately panicked and told Nebula that she must use the starship to lure the armada away from his world. Nebula replied that she would decide how to fight the armada and began to order Levan to have Gunthar prepare something but was interrupted by Gorth grabbing her arm and insisting that she had to listen to him. Having had enough of the Skrull, Nebula shot him dead while Levan watched, then she ordered Levan to prepare a propaganda statement saying that Emperor Gorth had died in battle with the enemy, and to then have all stations made battle-ready! Nebula then added that Levan was to make sure that everyone knew that they would be taking no prisoners!

(Avengers I#260 (fb) - BTS) - Not long afterwards, as Nebula's mercenary fleet were awaiting the arrival of the Skrull Imperial armada, Nebula secreted herself in the innermost chambers of Sanctuary II and left orders that she not be disturbed.

(Avengers I#260) - As Nebula was examining Sanctuary II's records to learn more about Thanos, she was interrupted by Levan. After being warned by her that, for his sake, it had better be important, Levan replied, "I assure you, it is! A patrol craft has intercepted a message capsule from the Skrull armada! It's being brought aboard now!" When Nebula asked where, Levan told her "Hangar deck 8" and Nebula ordered him to come along to see if the armada was ready to accept her command. Levan accompanied Nebula to the hangar deck where they met Skunge who was carrying the capsule, a com-unit that then deployed so that General Zedrao and Captain Marvel could call upon those aboard Sanctuary II and the other ships to surrender to the forces of the Imperial Skrull armada in return for mercy. Enraged by the suggestion that she should surrender, Nebula blasted the com-unit and vowed to exterminate every last one of them! Now knowing that Captain Marvel had survived, Nebula told Levan to make sure that she died, then ordered him to personally command ship's artillery and to prepare all hands for immediate battle! Levan replied, "As you wish, Nebula!" and then, as he left the hangar deck, he began issuing his own orders, saying, "Squad leaders report to your stations! Ready full power for all shield generators and initiate all attack procedures!"

   As the battle between Nebula's fleet and the Imperial Skrull armada raged on, Nebula realized that the allies who were helping the Skrulls were powerful and that her fleet might be in trouble. She began to prepare an escape for herself, and she ordered Gunther and Kehl to come with her because they had important work to do. However, she did not call for either Levan or Skunge to join them.

   The situation became worse for Nebula's fleet when Firelord, enraged by Nebula's destruction of his homeworld and its people, arrived in the combat zone and used his Power Cosmic to direct all the fiery power of a small star at Sanctuary II's shields. Those onboard that starship immediately detected the attack and when one of his subordinates asked what it was, Levan replied, "I don't know, but whatever it is, the shields can't take much more of it. Focus on the hot spot and hit it with all the trans-shield power we can spare!" His order was obeyed, and the section of the shield that Firelord was attacking erupted like a great solar flare. striking him with enough force to send him hurtling away from the starship until he impacted on a nearby moon.

     Preparing for their enemies to board, Levan told the defenders, "Step it up with the auxiliary blaster! That witch blew out our main guns when she broke the shields. We have to replace them before it's..." Levan's words were cut off by an explosion that blew an opening in the hull even as Levan said, "...too late!" 

    When Thanos seemingly then entered through that hole, declaring that he had come to reclaim his ship from the usurpers, a shocked Levan reacted badly, babbling, "Thanos!?! B-But you're dead!! D-Don't just stand there you idiots. Fire! FIRE!!" 

    Levan's men obeyed but "Thanos," aided by his brother Starfox and the Avengers Captain America, the Black Knight and Hercules, quickly overpowered them and left them begging for mercy. With his hand around Levan's throat, "Thanos" replied that such as they deserved no mercy, but Captain America objected, saying that the Avengers had promised to show mercy to any who surrendered. 

    When Thanos noted that he was not an Avenger, Captain America countered by asking if men like them were even worth the effort it would take to kill them. Thanos accepted this argument and let Levan fall to the deck, and then, stating that he saw no further use for this guise now that they had gained a foothold on the starship, "Thanos" transformed into his true form as the Skrull leader, General Zedrao. Once Hercules, the Black Knight and Starfox had also returned to their true Skrull forms, they continued on into the starship, led by Captain America.

   Working together, the Avengers and the Skrull forces soon overcame the mercenary forces and captured Sanctuary II, but the Beyonder, misunderstanding what Firelord had said he wanted, inadvertently helped Nebula escape capture by using his power to remove her, Gunthar, Kehl, and their fully-equipped escape craft from the Andromeda galaxy by teleporting them away, presumably to another galaxy.

(Avengers I#260 - BTS / Maximum Security#1 (fb) - BTS) - Levan was presumably among those members of Nebula's mercenary army who were captured and imprisoned by the Skrulls for their crimes.

(Maximum Security#1 (fb) - BTS) - Sometime later, the Intergalactic Council voted that that the human race was to be contained on their homeworld and Earth's solar system was quarantined. To distract humanity from freeing itself, the council also decided to use Earth as a prison planet where the lawless, the unwanted and the untameable of the galaxies would be sent. Levan, along with Gunthar, Kehl and Skunge, were among those transmatted to Earth.

(Maximum Security#1 (fb)) - Once on Earth, Levan, Gunthar, Kehl, Skunge and two Froma ended up in the Alphabet City neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City where they came into armed conflict with the violent vigilante known as the Punisher.

(Maximum Security#1 (fb) - BTS) - Levan and Gunthar (or beings who looked like them) ended up imprisoned in a cell in an underground holding center beneath superhuman wing of a prison in Lurton, Virginia.

(Maximum Security#1) - At S.T.A.R.S. headquarters in Washington, D.C., U.S.Agent watched video footage of the battle between the aliens and the Punisher in Alphabet City.
   Minutes later, Levan and Gunthar (or beings who looked like them) were looking out through the bars of their cell when U.S.Agent visited the holding center looking for aliens who could speak English and answer his questions.

(Maximum Security#3 - BTS) - Levan and the others were presumably among the aliens who were removed from Earth after the truth behind Maximum Security was revealed.

   Exactly what happened to Levan after the Imperial Skrull armada defeated Nebula's forces has never been revealed, While it seems likely that the Skrulls would have imprisoned him and the other captured mercenaries for their crimes and that he was in a Skrull prison when the Intergalactic Council decided to use Earth as a prison planet, it's also possible that he could have escaped or been released, and was then arrested elsewhere for other crimes by other authorities and sent to some unspecified non-Skrullian prison.

   The quarter-page entry on the Sarks that appeared in The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe II#15 stated that "Levan is a member of Nebula's Freebooters (see Nebula)." While this name has never been used in ANY story or in Nebula's own profile, appearing in a handbook does make it "official."

   Some online sources have claimed that Levan was a Kree. These claims were presumably inspired by Nebula's entry in Annihilation: The Nova Corps Files#1 which referred to Levan as a "Kree pirate." That entry was in error.

   The first member of the Sark race to appear in any Marvel comic was Captain Autolycus, a Black Knight in the service of the Universal Church of Truth, who first appeared in Strange Tales I#179 (April, 1979). Since writer/artist Jim Starlin did not include any details about his background at that time, that fact that he was a member of the Sark race from the planet Sarka in the Tilnast star system of the Milky Way galaxy was not revealed until that information was invented for the quarter-page entry on the Sarks that appeared in The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe I#9 (September, 1983). So, while Starlin may have created Autolycus, it was the Official Handbook staff who "created" the Sark race, and Roger Stern, John Buscema and Tom Palmer were presumably using this official data when they created Levan in Avengers I#255 (May, 1985). However, there is one small problem:

FACIAL MARKINGS?
   As created by Jim Starlin, Autolycus had skin that was light blue everywhere on his face except for around both of his eyes and on his nose, and the first OHotMU entry on the Sarks seemingly established that this odd pattern of skin coloration was a characteristic of the Sark race. Accordingly, it was strange that the skin on Levan's face was uniformly light blue, without any black markings. Of course, since Autolycus and Levan are the only two members of the Sark race from Reality-616 who have yet been depicted in any Marvel comic, it would be difficult to say whether the presence or the absence of these black markings was "normal" for their race. Due to this lack of information, we are therefore forced to speculate about the make-up of the Sark population.
  • One possible explanation is that these black markings are artificial, like how members of some human societies use distinctive body art (like body painting or tattoos) to display their cultural identities. It could be that it is customary for Sarks to similarly adorn their faces with these black markings and that Levan, for whatever reason, simply chose not to do so.
  • Another possible explanation is that these black markings are natural and their presence or absence on any given Sark is due to genetic variations within the Sark species. Presumably, at some point during the evolution of the Sark species, some populations of Sarks acquired these markings as an ancestral trait while other populations did not. Alternatively, all Sarks may have originally possessed these facial markings but, over generations, some populations slowly lost this trait. However it happened, it is now completely natural for some Sarks (like Autolycus) to have those black markings while other Sarks (like Levan) do not. This would be similar to how, in the real world, some humans have epicanthic folds while other humans do not.
  • A third possible explanation is that the presence of these black facial markings is almost universal within the Sark race, with those who possess them being considered "normal" while those who lack them are regarded as suffering from a birth defect. Alternatively, it could be that "normal" Sarks don't have those black facial markings while those who do are considered to be genetic oddities.
  • A fourth possibility is that the black facial markings are natural for all Sarks and that Levan was born with them but later chose to have them removed. Given his criminal history, it could be that Levan had his markings removed in an attempt to avoid detection by authorities who were looking for a Sark. Without those markings, Levan could appear to be a member of several other humanoid races, like a Levian or a Blue Kree. It does seem that some people working for Marvel Comics were fooled.

    Personally, I prefer the idea that the markings are artificial but the other three explanations seem equally plausible to me. I guess we'll just have to wait until the next time some Marvel writer uses a Sark in their story to find out the real reason for the facial markings. Of course, it's been over twenty years since any Sark has appeared in any Marvel story, so it might be a while.
