MOLTEN MAN-THING duplicate
Real Name: None
Identity/Class: Magically-created giant monster
Occupation: Mischief and publicity, with some combat
Group Membership: None
Affiliations: Frank Johnson (creator)
Enemies: Fantastic Four (Ant-Man/Scott Lang, Human Torch/Johnny Storm, Invisible Woman/Sue Richards, Thing/Ben Grimm; although Ant-Man mostly just stood around...)
Known Relatives: Frank Johnson (creator);
figurative sibling relationship with Zzutak and Xxirys (both also created by Frank Johnson)
Aliases: "Walkin' Lava Lamp" (from Thing)
Base of Operations: A short distance from Museum of the Monstrous and Strange, SoHo (South of Houston street), lower Manhattan, New York
First Appearance: Fantastic Four Unlimited#7 (September, 1994)
Powers/Abilities: A magically-created giant being seemingly composed of molten rock, the Molten Man-Thing duplicate was resistant to impacts, as objects would just pass harmlessly through it or get stuck in its mass.
Its molten mass was likely somewhere from 1200 to 4500 degrees Fahrenheit (650 to 2500 degrees Celsius), which is the temperature at which most forms of rock melt. It was hot enough to pain the Thing but not to actually injure his rocky epidermis.
It was likely superhumanly strong and presumably resistant to great heat but vulnerable to intense cold, which might cause it to solidify.
Its existence was limited by the will of Frank Johnson.
Height: Unrevealed (approximately 15')History:
(Fantastic Four Unlimited#7 (fb) - BTS) - Using the Zutec paints he had received from
Yucoya-Tzin, Frank Johnson replicated the Molten Man-Thing and sent it
on something of a rampage as a publicity stunt for the opening night of his Museum of the Monstrous and Strange.
A news crew, including a female reporter and cameraman Sven filmed the giant creature, while a New York Police Department officer directed people away from it.
(Fantastic Four Unlimited#7) - The arriving Fantastic Four observed the giant creature on the streets of lower Manhattan, and they "recognized" it as the Molten Man-Thing.
Commenting that he was also a "thing" and likely right up his alley, Ben Grimm leapt down on top of the creature, only to sink into its red-hot mass.
As the Thing punched a fist and stuck his head outside of the creature, the Torch flew by and pulled him out.
(Fantastic Four Unlimited#7 (fb) - BTS) - Frank Johnson began to will the Molten Man-Thing out of existence.
(Fantastic Four Unlimited#7) - As the Torch shot fireballs and the Invisible Woman projected spheres of her invisible energy at the creature, it began to shrink in size.
Shouting that the creature could not just melt down without him getting a chance to land a haymaker punch, the Thing rushed forward, but it completely vanished as he swung, and he instead crashed into a car.
(Fantastic Four Unlimited#7 - BTS) - Frank Johnson then appeared and revealed how he had created the creature with the paints he had been given by an ancient Aztec elder (Johnson did not yet know Yucoya-Tzin's name), and that he had previously used them to create Zzutak and its enemy (later identified as Xxirys).
When Johnson noted "No harm done," the Thing argued that someone could have had a heat attack...like himself, for instance. Johnson admitted that he may have gone too far, but that he had never meant to hurt anyone, and he then escorted the Fantastic Four into his museum.
Comments: Created by Roy Thomas, Herb Trimpe, and Carmen Imperato.
The original Molten Man-Thing was more of a red color, but Frank Johnson has been somewhat consistent int painting re-creations/re-activated beings in different colors, as he did when he revived Zzutak and Xxirys.
