Base of Operations: Daniel Rand's apartment;
unidentified school in New York City;
formerly K'un-Lun
First Appearance: Iron Fist: The Living Weapon#1 (June, 2014)
Powers/Abilities: Pei possesses the Iron Fist power, the "chi" energy of the dragon Shou-Lao, allowing her to render her fists as hard as iron and to strike with devastating force.
Pei's monk training, discipline, and perhaps something in her innate nature allowed her to access secret spells in The Book of Iron Fist that were hidden even from the experienced Iron Fist (Daniel Rand-K'ai). Amongst the spells she accessed and used was a spell to reincarnate Shou-Lao, which she unwittingly used to resurrect all previous incarnations of Shou-Lao.
Pei is an experienced and highly skilled martial artist, trained by unspecified monks of K'un-Lun and subsequently by Iron Fist (Daniel Rand).
As a native of K'un-Lun, she
presumably possessed enhanced vitality, with an extended, although
undefined, lifespan, aging extremely slowly. It is likely that the
delays in aging take place after reaching full maturity.
Height: Unrevealed (perhaps
4'5" based on an image of her standing directly in front of Brenda
Swanson, and extrapolating from her height compared to Daniel Rand's)
Weight: Unrevealed (perhaps 80
lbs., based on average weight of a girl of that height ranging between
70-88 pounds, and assuming that she was relatively lean but muscular)
Eyes: Brown (reddish-brown when she was sad/angered)
Hair: Black
History:
(Immortal
Iron Fists I#1 (fb) – BTS) – When Pei was four years old, she plucked the crown
off a serpent while training.
(Immortal Iron Fists I#1 (fb) – BTS) – When Pei was eight years old, she walked the lake of fire.
(Iron Fist: The Living Weapon#2 (fb) - BTS) <The day before the main story> - The egg of the next Shou-Lao called to Pei; liking being near it, she sneaked down into the chamber holding the egg.
(Iron
Fist: The Living Weapon#2 (fb)) - The Thunderer (Sparrow) scolded Pei
for coming there as she knew those chambers were forbidden.
After Pei explained her reasons, the Thunderer acknowledged that it called to all of them, and that -- like Pei -- it would one day emerge as an important part of K'un-Lun, but for now it was small and fragile.
Sparrow's step-brother, Davos (the Steel Serpent), then appeared
alongside a number of Terror Priests, voicing his plans to succeed his
father, Lei-Kung, as ruler of K'un-Lun.
Realizing the danger, Sparrow shoved Pei away and told her to run.
(Iron
Fist: The Living Weapon#2 (fb) - BTS / Iron
Fist: The Living Weapon#5 (fb) - BTS) - Pei took the egg of Shou-Lao with her in her backpack as she fled.
(Iron Fist: The Living Weapon#1 (fb) - BTS) - Pei was sent to relay an urgent message for Iron Fist to come back to K'un-Lun. En route, she was shot in the back with at least four arrows, although her backpack partially protected her.
(Iron Fist: The Living Weapon#1 (fb) - BTS) - A group of the One (a monstrous robot with Wendell Rand's face and memories, formerly used to test the Iron Fists)'s undead cyborg ninjas (rotting flesh held together by robotics and machinery) serving the One assaulted Rand Tower and Daniel Rand (Iron Fist)'s apartment.
(Iron Fist: The Living Weapon#1) - When Danny returned, he encountered a cyborg that asked where was "the girl." Iron Fist eventually subdued/decapitated the cyborg. Fleeing from Davos' Terror
Priests, Pei ducked down a manhole-like hole in the ground, dropped
into a deep basement, and covered the lid to avoid detection.
When Pei hit the floor
below, the egg was knocked out of her backpack, and it hit the brick
wall and cracked open.
As the young Shou-Lao incarnation emerged, breathing fire, Pei considered, "I'm so dead..."
(Iron
Fist: The Living Weapon#6) - Fleeing from the dragon, Pei rushed past
the undead cyborg ninjas whom the dragon struck with a flame blast.
As
the dragon caught up to her, Pei begged for mercy, but the tiny dragon
knocked her down and licked her face. As it took off flying with her on
its back while repeatedly saying "Gork!", Pei decided that that was its
name.
As Pei prepared to depart the area atop Gork, however, Davos suddenly grabbed Gork by the neck, sending Pei tumbling to the ground, after which Davos hurled Gork against the wall, knocking it out.
Davos thanked Pei for protecting the egg and offered her a place in the new kingdom if she kneeled.
(Iron Fist: The Living Weapon#6 - BTS) - Pei either kneeled or was subdued by Davos (presumably the latter).
(Iron
Fist: The Living Weapon#6) - Brenda, along with Detective. Li and his police,
arrived, and Li ordered Davos to step away from the girl, but when
Davos
seemed to level a weapon, the police opened fire on Davos.
Wounded,
Davos extended cybernetic weaponry that drained the lives of the other
police, leaving only Li and Brenda alive.
With Pei and Gork wrapped up in cybernetic tendrils, Davos departed.
(Immortal Iron Fists I#1 (fb) – BTS) – Rand challenged Pei to learn how to fight without her fists, and he enrolled her in school, figuring that would give her a healthy challenge at adapting. Boys at school began bullying, teasing, and punching Pei, calling her ‘Noodles’ to taunt her.
(Immortal
Iron Fists I#1) – After being bullied at school, Pei trained with Rand across
the city, and he was disappointed when she used her iron fist to defend
herself. At home with Gork, she offered to cook, but Rand reminded her that she
was a student not a slave. That night, social workers threatened to take Pei
from Rand if he didn’t tidy up the apartment and get paperwork.
The next day,
three popular girls, who called themselves the C-Train (named Christi-Lynne,
Candace, and Cookie) introduced themselves to Pei, then teased her about
feminine hygiene products before Todd and Jayce bullied her more, though
Candace did stand up for Pei.
Rand hired Madame Yeoh to look after Pei, who initially saw this as a sign she was disappointing her master, but Yeoh made her a dragon mask and encouraged her to find creative ways to stand up for herself. The next day, Pei wore the dragon mask and fought off the bullies who were targeting Jayce.
(Immortal Iron Fists I#2) – After training with Rand and playing with Gork, Pei got a ride from Madame Yeoh to school, where the C-Train continued to bully her. Ray and Izzy introduced themselves to Pei, and they helped her understand the social circles at school.
Later at the park, Pei heard that Jayce Paz was
missing, so she masked up and attacked the sports team to see if any of the
bullies knew where he was.
Madame Yeoh counseled Pei on learning from her
feelings, then she sent Pei out to find adventures.
Pei saw posters for other
missing children, including Kim, Luis Garcia, Mahira Qamar, Pablo, Lupita
Nelson, and Kaare Kyle Andrews, and the C-Train confronted Pei while she was
with Izzy and Ray.
Pei saw frog-headed demons on motorcycles battling Iron Fist, and she jumped in to protect the students and help fight. When one of the demons tried to swallow Pei, she retrieved a scroll from inside its mouth, returning its form to a regular frog. Rand was angry with Pei at first, but Madame Yeoh covered for her. The C-Train suddenly wanted to be friends with Pei.
(Immortal Iron Fists I#3) – C-Train had Pei, who they called Pie, join them in cheer-leading at the basketball game for players like Tommy, but Pei shocked her friends by dunking a basketball instead.
Later, the C-Train did Pei’s
make-up, and realized she had a crush on Tommy.
When Rand got angry at Pei, she told him he was no longer her Thunderer. With Madame Yeoh, Pei took her friends shopping, using Rand’s credit card. Izzy and Ray rushed in say they knew where Jayce was, and Pei went with them, even when the C-Train said they weren’t friends anymore then. Pei apologized to Izzy and Ray and visited Jayce in the hospital. Tommy waited for her outside.
(Immortal Iron Fists I#4 (fb) – BTS) – Tommy asked Pei to the dance.
(Immortal
Iron Fists I#4) – Madame Yeoh took Pei to school, where C-Train picked on her
again, and she saw Ray. Pei got ready for the dance, then made peace with Rand.
After dancing with Tommy, Pei was announced as the queen of the dance by Mrs.
Lawson, and she gave a speech indicating she had lost sight of her values.
Pei punched Tommy, breaking up with him, after which the missing kids, including Parker, Sailor, and Casey, returned, red-eyed and seeming to be under the leadership of Madame Yeoh.
(Immortal
Iron Fists I#5) – Yeoh revealed herself as the daughter of the demon Mara, and stated that she planned to kill Pei.
Iron Fist arrived, with his ally Aisyi, another daughter of Mara, and Candace revealed herself as a third demon daughter of Mara. Pei saw Jayce and the other mind-controlled kids take on demon forms even as Mara attacked. Mara badly wounded Iron Fist and then tried convincing Pei to turn the Wheel of Dharma, which would either give her power, or save Rand.
Pei chose to save Rand, offering him her own chi. Mara transported Pei to another dimension, where she was with Jayce and facing a crab-demon, while those on Earth forgot about her.
Pei was shocked to see Brenda Swanson there.
(Immortal
Iron Fists I#6) – Protecting Jayce, Pei kept fighting demons in the arena.
Jayce and Pei, while in chains, held hands and admitted they liked each
other. Mother-Dragon, allegedly the first of all Shou-Lao
attacked, and Jayce was badly burned trying to provide a distraction so Pei
could escape.
Brenda
arrived and told the distraught Pei to get behind her so she could protect her.
However, Pei grabbed one of Brenda's swords and -- after Brenda argued
she couldn't fight without her Inron Fist -- broke it in half and
countered that Daniel had taught her that while weapons could be
broken, she could not. She prepared a Kung Fu attack against the dragon, but was ultimately swatted down by her tail.
Guided via her remote connection to Daniel, who
advised her to trust in her training, believe in herself, and to fight
for her loved ones; he further noted that the heart was not soft, but
rather the strongest muscle in the body and it would give her more
power than any form of chi. Fighting thusly, Pei defeated
Mother-Dragon, extending an energy fist through her chest.
(Immortal
Iron Fists I#6 (fb) - BTS) – After tearing out Mother-Dragon's heart,
Pei considered that she already had her mark and just needed to earn
it, so she restored the dragon's heart.
(Immortal Iron Fists I#6) – Pei returned to Brenda, who noted that Jayce had perished. However, as Pei kissed Jayce, she apparently released her chi into him, healing him; the energies blinded Brenda, but allowed Daniel to sense Pei (and Jayce) and return her to Earth.
Jayce appeared back on Earth, where Rand, Gork, Izzy, and Ray (plus Detective Li) were
waiting.
Brenda returned with Mother-Dragon to her realm (K'un-Lun or the Pits?).
Pleased that she had earned the dragon tattoo on her back, Pei went back to fighting crime with Iron Fist.
She considered that she would return to K'un-Lun when the portal next opened in about ten years.
(Contagion#3) - As Manhattan was threatened by the
Urchin, a human carrying a fungus apparently magically weaponized by
the H'ylthri, Pei -- after having played some with young Danielle Cage
-- joined Jessica Jones and Sparrow to seek out Luke Cage, who had
become a victim of the fungus.
After beating up a trio of the "Tracksuit Mafia" (red sweatsuit-wearing
Russian criminals) trying to steal from the dead, the three women
located the inert (unconscious...comatose...) Luke Cage, after which
they were joined by Black Tarantula, Elektra, Moon Knight, Punisher,
and White Tiger. Moon Knight informed them that though the Thing had
slain the Urchin who brought the fungus to Earth, the fungus was using
a new host, Ruby, a young girl it had infected early on.
(Contagion#3 - BTS) - Meanwhile, Iron Fist
enlisted the aid of Senor Magico and the League of International Magic
Practitioners (Bob Jennings, Mister Je-Ju, Nana Marefa, Night Witch,
Sorcha) who helped contain the fungus and prevent infection of the
heroes exposed to it.
(Contagion#4) - Pei joined the others in traveling
to Penn Station to confront the Urchin, who then infected Black
Tarantula, Elektra, and White Tiger after Senor Magico was knocked
unconscious. Jessica pulled Pei to safety, saving her from being
infected as well. They were joined by Piledriver, whose teammates in
the Wrecking Crew had succumbed to the Urchin as well.
Three days later, as time began
to run out for those infected, Jessica and Pei searched for the Urchin
in the subways under Lower Manhattan.
The next day, the sixth and
final day, when the infection would become fatal, those active
reluctantly agreed to allow Moon Knight to get infected as his
experience with his dissociative identity disorder might make him
better to deal with the minds absorbed by the Urchin. Pei and the
others confronted the Urchin, who now controlled the forms of those it
infected.
(Contagion#5) - After Moon Knight was infected, Pei fought defensively against the Urchin's army. Cage, Black Tarantula, and White Tiger overwhelmed and restrained her, and she was infected as well.
Within the Urchin's
mindscape(?) Moon Knight severed the tendrils restraining and growing
into Pei, freeing her. She then engaged the tendrils, occupying them
while Moon Knight located its brain.
Meanwhile, in the physical
world, Pei's form stopped fighting alongside the Urchin's victims, and
Senor Magico appreciated that the mystic trail leading from her to
Urchin had been interrupted.
(Contagion#5 (fb) - BTS) - Pei similarly freed the
minds of the others trapped within the Urchin, including Black
Tarantula, Bulldozer, Luke Cage, Dr. Strange, Human Torch, Invisible
Woman, Mr. Fantastic, Mole Man, a Moloid, Punisher, Thunderball, White
Tiger, and the Wrecker.
(Contagion#5) - Moon Knight was nearly overwhelmed by the Urchin, but Pei pulled him free. With the Urchin weakened by its other victims being freed, Moon Knight severed its connection to its host, Ruby.
The Invisible Woman then contained the fungal organism inside a force field, after which it was transferred into Vibranium-lined glass sphere in the Fantastic Four's base on 4 Yancy Street.
Also freed from the Urchin's
control was Anton (Yancy Street Gang), Black Panther, Captain America,
Iron Man, and likely Captain Marvel, Ghost Rider, She-Hulk, and Thor.
(Black Cat II#8) - When Black Cat -- as part of a
plot to rob the New York Thieves Guild's extradimensional vault --
broke into the Rand building along with the Beetle (Janice Lincoln) to
photograph the Randall Gate so her agent Ceres could make a copy, Gork
sensed them, and Pei followed Gork to confront the pair.
While Gork
affectionately licked the Black Cat, Pei powered up her Iron Fist and
insisted the Black Cat release her dragon.
Iron Fist then arrived engaged
the Black Cat, while Pei confronted Beetle. The armored mercenary made
light of Pei, calling her cute and warning her that her armor was
bulletproof, but after Pei smashed her back into a wall, she tried to
flee.
Pei repeatedly battered Beetle until the Black Cat -- her technology having transmitted all of the images she needed -- had it release a bright light that briefly blinded Iron Fist and Pei, allowing her and Beetle to escape.
(Iron Fist: Heart of the Dragon I#1) - When Rand went to work on a project with Fooh, he left Pei and Gork in the care of Luke Cage. While they were playing hide and seek, Lady Bullseye and the undead of the Eighth Realm's Hierophant attacked, seeking to kidnap Gork. Pei punched Lady Bullseye before Iron Fist returned with Fooh, and Lady Bullseye fled.
(Iron Fist: Heart of the Dragon I#2) - Iron Fist, Fooh, Luke Cage, Pei, and Gork went to the Pagoda of Universal Compassion in the Heart of Heaven, where Quan Yin, the Mother of Mercy, informed Iron Fist that he needed to unite the seven cities on Earth before the Hidden City manifested itself there, seeking to open a gate that would upset the universal balance. Fooh activated the machine to open the portals to Earth, and Fat Cobra, Dog Brother #1, and Bride of Nine Spiders appeared. An unexpected portal to the Hidden City then opened, and they saw the Bao Fu Citadel being defended by Midnight Sun and an army of the undead.
(Iron Fist: Heart of the Dragon I#3 (fb) - BTS) - After the undead were defeated, the heroes stacked their corpses against Bao Fu Citadel to block the gate.
(Iron Fist: Heart of the Dragon I#3) - Iron Fist left Pei and Gork with Fat Cobra and Dog Brother #1 as he headed off on a mission. At the gates of the Hidden City, Pei and Gork helped contain the Hidden Dragon.
(Iron Fist: Heart of the Dragon I#4) - At Bao Fu Citadel, Fat Cobra, Dog Brother #1, Bride of Nine Spiders, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Gork, Fooh, and Pei fled from the Ghost Dragon and the undead, needing to protect Gork and the only other remaining dragon, Spider Dragon, whom they moved to Peng Lai.
Pei and Fooh joined the heroes in battling the undead in Brazil. When one zombie grabbed Gork, Pei sliced it in half, after which Luke Cage helped protect her from other zombies. Prince of Orphans soon arrived with the Spider Dragon, and then he took the team to the Hidden City, where they saw that Okoye had just killed the Hidden Dragon.
(Iron Fist: Heart of the Dragon I#5) - Pei and the others watched as Iron Fist sparred with Okoye for taking on the chi of the Spider Dragon, then Quan Yin revealed her presence to guide the heroes on the path of compassion. Hierophant and Yama Dragonsbane (Brenda Swanson) then attacked, killing Quan Yin, after which Pei and the others sparred with Hierophant before entering the Hidden City and facing the Ghost Dragon.
(Iron Fist: Heart of the Dragon I#6) - The heroes were nearly overwhelmed by the Ghost Dragon before Iron Fist realized they needed to take Gork’s chi to fight him back. Pei was initially reluctant until she saw Luke Cage badly hurt, and after Gork seemed to volunteer to sacrifice himself, she offered Gork to the others, knowing there was a chance he might be resurrected afterward. When Hierophant attacked, Okoye wielded the dragon chi to defeat him. Quan Yin revealed her survival and presented Pei with an egg, promising that Gork would be reborn and would be undying. During the fight, Rand had surrendered his iron fist power to Okoye, and she in turn passed this power on to Gork’s egg.
Comments: Created by Kaare Kyle Andrews.
When Pei collapsed at the end of Iron Fist: The
Living Weapon#1, with the arrows seemingly in her back, the arrows were
either in her and through Gork's egg (which seems unlikely, since the
egg was intact when next seen, and Gork was uninjured) or through
neither Pei nor Gork. Presumably Pei collapsed from exhaustion, rather
than arrow wounds.
I did not see Pei in Iron Fist: The Living Weapon#4, 7, or 8.
Thanks to Markus Raymond for pointing out the Contagion and Black Cat appearances that slipped through by leaking old brain.
