History:
(Saga of Crystar the Crystal Warrior#8 (fb) - BTS) - Ranilla was a scholarly lady from the Sea Province.
(Saga of Crystar the Crystal Warrior#8 (fb) - BTS) - Koth, a mere captain in the Royal Guard, wooed the lady Ranilla and won her hand in marriage. The marriage surprised many, as Koth had a well-earned reputation as a cynic.
(Saga of Crystar the Crystal Warrior#8 (fb) - BTS) - Koth believed that Ranilla was too good for him.
(Saga of Crystar the Crystal Warrior#8 (fb) - BTS) - In the nights when Koth was away serving in the royal guard during the first Chaos War (before Koth and his allies were transformed into crystalline warriors), Ranilla sometimes felt she could hear Koth's music (his flute (or equivalent) playing) through the emptiness, and she would think that as long as he played, they would never be far from one another.
(Saga of Crystar the Crystal Warrior#8 (fb) - BTS) - During the first Chaos War, Koth suffered a shoulder wound. He went to stay with Ranilla as he recovered. She could tell he was in significant pain when he became very still and when he was restless in the night.
(Saga
of Crystar the Crystal
Warrior#8 (fb) - BTS) - One of the larger sea monster, secretly mutated
from its placid nature into a huge, savage, and mindless creature, and
influenced
by the Chaos sorcerer Zardeth, assaulted Ranilla's village while
Crystallium's king, the benevolent sorcerer Ogeode, and the main force
of the army were occupied elsewhere. The creature sought to kill
anything that moved in the coastal village.
Zardeth did this as a trap, appreciating that the princes Crystar and
Moltar would likely come to stop the creature, after which he would
send chaos demons to slay the exhausted warriors.
(Saga of Crystar the Crystal Warrior#8 (fb) - BTS) <The day before the main flashback story> - Ranilla consulted the old scrolls, and she thought she saw something that might help them in their plight.
(Saga of Crystar the Crystal Warrior#8 (fb) - BTS) - The princes Crystar and Moltar, as well as the warrior Captain Hyatt, convinced royal advisor Feldspar to send them to Ranilla's village to determine how bad the situation was and what aid they may render.
(Saga of Crystar the Crystal Warrior#8 (fb) - When Ranilla asked Koth how his shoulder was, he told her not to worry about his "little scratch," and he told her that he had exaggerated his injury so he could enjoy his leisure with her. Ranilla noted how she could tell he was really in pain, but he told her not to worry, as wounds were a soldier's lot in life, and that better man than he had suffered far worse. As she applied a fresh dressing to make it less painful, Ranilla told him that there were no better men.
Ranilla then noted her fear that he courted death, but Koth assured her that he may have done so in the past, but not since meeting her. He then made her promise that if he died in battle that she must not hasten to join him but rather to continue to live out her life, and that they would reunited in their own time. Ranilla promised and asked the same of him, after which she returned to her studies to see if she could locate a means to aid their village. When Koth promised to be quiet, she told him that nothing brought her more peace and joy than his music, and so he played his flute for her.
(Saga of Crystar the Crystal Warrior#8 (fb) - BTS) - Ranilla learned that certain stones had been created by the forces of chaos in the past in an effort to bend crystal -- which was a thing of order and could be used against chaos -- to its evil will; these stones would disrupt the nature of anything they touched. She suspected that one of these stones was lodged with the sea monster's chest and that if the stone was freed, the monster would be destroyed.
Ranilla shared this information with Koth and the village's men, who gathered to help against the monster in any way they could.
(Saga of Crystar the Crystal Warrior#8 (fb) - BTS) - Ranilla, Koth, and other villagers watched as the sea monster attacked the approaching princes and captain. When Ranilla saw Moltar's dragon fall into the sea, she feared the worst. Crystar recovered Moltar from the waters, and they departed with Heyatt, having assessed the creatures and wanting to plan how to stop it.
(Saga of Crystar the Crystal Warrior#8 (fb)) - When Crystar, Heyatt, and Moltar arrived in the village, Ranilla rejoiced to see they were all OK. She then told them of what she had learned and how she suspected that they might destroy it. Koth advised Crystar and Moltar that Ranilla usually knew what she was talking about.
Crystar had Moltar stay with him while Koth joined Heyatt, intending to come at the sea monster from multiple directions so that it would be distracted, allowing one of the groups to dislodge the gemstone. Koth sent Ranilla back to the village with a group of other villagers meant to act as backup in case the monster defeated the other warriors or emerged closer to the village than expected. She made Koth promise to take care, and he told her to have faith in him but that he would be cautious.
(Saga of Crystar the Crystal Warrior#8 (fb) - BTS) - Zardeth then unleashed his chaos demons toward the village. Ranilla was mortally wounded in the assault by the chaos demons while Koth rushed back to the village.
(Saga of Crystar the Crystal Warrior#8 (fb)) - As Koth arrived, the dying Ranilla told him that it appeared that she was going to go first, and she made him remember and honor their pledge. She told him that when he played his music, they would still be together.
(Saga of Crystar the Crystal Warrior#8 (fb) - BTS) - Heyatt destroyed the sea monster but was swiftly slain by one of the chaos demons.
(Saga of Crystar the Crystal Warrior#1 - BTS (see comments)) - Koth confessed what had happened to Warbow. Later, Koth took Ranilla’s body home for burial (see comments).
(Saga of Crystar the Crystal Warrior#8 - BTS) - On the anniversary of Ranilla's and Heyatt's passing, Crystar shared the story with his allies. Moltar also related the story to Lavour and the other Lava Men, recalling what he owed to the love of one man and noting that on this day he could not fight.
Comments: Created by Jo Duffy, Ricardo Villamonte, and Dave Simons.
Headstones and
statues can be seen in issue #4, yet in issue #11, Crystar
mentions of how the dead are thrown into an active volcano.
Perhaps the stones are symbols, or maybe reminders? Of course, issue #4
was a bedtime story told by Kalibar to his children, so the events
within and how they transpired is suspect.
Extra special thanks to Madison
Carter for clarifying this question - yes, Crystar and all related
characters are in fact Marvel owned and created. You might remember
these guys from the Remco toy line, but the toys were a tie-in to the
comic and not vice versa.

I took the note about Koth telling Warbow what had happened and taking
Ranilla's body home for burial from Koth's profile, but I scanned
through #1 and didn't see any discussion of Ranilla, Koth's wife, or a
burial.
Ranilla previously received a sub-profile under Koth 2/16/2008.
This profile was completed 7/31/2021, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 20th anniversary 's celebratory event.
