First Appearance: Avengers: The Initative featuring Reptil#1 (May, 2009)

Powers/Abilities: Reptil gains his powers from use of the Fossilized Amulet (also called the Jewel), one that he used to wear around his neck though it later embedded itself into his skin directly. Initially, Reptil could only transform parts of his body into dinosaur form (growing raptor teeth and jaw, or pteranodon wings, or a brontosaurus neck, for example), as these transformations required shifting mass from certain parts of his form to others. Reptil can now change into entire dinosaurs (mosasaurus and triceratops for example) with the use of Pym Particles, granting him added mass (likely from the Kosmos dimension) to give him the ability to grow in size and weight.

Reptil has summoned abilities from many dinosaurs, including archaeopteryx eyes, stegosaurus spines, sauropod tails (which can create sonic booms when they hit the ground), nythronychus claws, polecanthus head, tyrannosaurus rex head, tricerotops head, deinocheirus claws, ankylosaurus plating, and pteranosaur wings and head). He has also fully turned into a triceratops, a brontosaurus, a trilobite, a stegosaurus, a deinonychus, an ankylosaurus, a tyrannasaurs rex, a pterodactyl, a liopleuridon, a mosasaurus, and other dinosaurs.

At times, Reptil strategically transforms to temporarily gain dinosaur skills. Reptil has altered his eyes to see farther, his nose to track more easily, his ears for more sensitive hearing, and has grown gills to breathe underwater as well as a sauropod tail, which creates a sonic boom when it strikes.

Reptil has some affinity with actual dinosaurs, including the villain Stegron, allowing him to sense where they are and if they are hungry. His sensory powers were once boosted by Baron von Blitzschlag. Reptil's healing accelerates when he is in dinosaur form, which carries over to his human form. In his early days, Reptil struggled to maintain control of his full dinosaur forms, finding himself giving in to the bloodthirsty rage of his carnivore self. Reptil's amulet gives him some resistance to magic spells or influence. Reptil seems to have been prophesied about thousands of years ago in another dimension. Reptil can sometimes give into more feral instincts when in dinosaur form. He cannot transform into a dinosaur without his amulet. No one else has been known to use the amulet, and Giant-Man has theorized that Reptil's powers are within him, not in the amulet itself. Nico Minoru once cast a spell that interfaced with the amulet to both track Old Lace to another dimension, and then to open a portal to that dimension. The amulet also once helped Reptil escape from the Crimson Bands of Cytorrak, implying it has some immunity to magic.

For a time, Reptil's mind inhabited a future version of himself, appearing as a man in his 30s, and the future self inhabited Reptil's body in return. Reptil maintains memories of his alternate future adult self in his brain, although the timeline has already changed, ensuring that future will never happen. Reptil wears a costume made of unstable molecules.

History:
(Avengers Academy#28 (fb) - BTS) - On Earth-78411, the Hag of the Pits created the Jewel, a mystic amulet (later called the Fossilized Amulet) that would allow its wearer to take on the forms and traits of dinosaurs. She grew to believe that it would empower "the Chosen One," a boy from the future who would come to save them all.

(Avengers Academy#6 (fb)) - Humberto "Berto" Ramos was raised by two parents who worked as paleontologists, and they taught him all about dinosaurs, but Berto wanted to be a superhero when he grew up.

(Reptil#1 (fb) - BTS) - Growing up, Humberto would go visit his Tia Gloria (Jessica's sister) and her children, Julian and Eva, and Humberto and Julian would share a room and have sleepovers.

(Reptil#2 (fb)) - Isaac and Jessica took young Humberto on a paleontological dig, where Jessica told Humberto that her favorite dinosaur was the quetzalcoatlus. They reinforced with Humberto that he should be proud of his heritage.

(Reptil#3 (fb) - BTS) - Humberto heard about his cousin Julian coming out as gay, and he was supportive.

(King in Black: Spider-Man#1/2 (fb) - BTS) - Humberto grew up idolizing Spider-Man, White Tiger, and Hank Pym.

(Avengers: The Initiative featuring Reptil#1 (fb) - BTS) - Humberto's parents once taught him that sauropods could smash their tails to the ground and create sonic booms.

(Avengers: The Initiative featuring Reptil#1 (fb) - BTS) - After his parents went missing on a paleontological dig, Humberto went to live with his grandfather in Sparks, Nevada. While experts believed his parents had died, Humberto believed they were still alive. He admired heroes and grew to especially like Cloud 9 of the Initiative. One day, while digging in the desert, which he often enjoyed doing to try and find fossils, Lopez found a strange gem just as a rockslide hit. He rushed away from the rockslide and realized that the gem granted him the ability to take on traits of whatever dinosaurs he could think of. Later, Grandpa Lopez helped him come up with the code-name Reptil, and Grandpa trademarked the name.

(Avengers: The Initiative featuring Reptil#1 (fb)) - When the SHRA (Superhuman Registration Act) passed, Reptil registered his powers with the government. They tested his amulet and realized it only worked for him, and that it glowed when he summoned his powers. They brought in a small dinosaur from the Savage Land, and Reptil realized he could sense the beast's hunger and that he had a general awareness of it, even though he couldn't control it.

(Avengers: The Initiative featuring Reptil#1) - Lopez was studying a book on archaeology in Niger, hoping to find clues about his parents, when his grandpa asked him to go to the store. Lopez ran into town in partial dinosaur form when Tigra, Prodigy, Batwing, Cloud 9, and Sunstreak arrived to recruit him for the Initiative. Reptil initially fought back (manifesting sharp teeth, a tail, wings, and back spikes) before getting star-struck, and he awkwardly asked Cloud 9 to Homecoming as he agreed to return with the Initiative trainees back to Camp Hammond. Baron von Blitzschlag said he could boost Reptil's sensory powers, but it would take a few days, so Tigra focused on training Reptil in a series of sparring sessions against the other Initiative trainees. Prodigy (while training on hand-to-hand combat) warned Reptil to get out of the Initiative while he still could, Batwing trained Reptil on flight strategies, Sunstreak showed him how to fight energy projectors, Komodo trained him in tail combat, Cloud 9 focused on marksmanship, and Tigra focused on agility. After Reptil asked Tigra for help in finding his parents, Dr. Val Cooper summoned him back to the Baron, who helped Reptil learn how to boost his senses, allowing him to find the villainous Stegron in South Dakota. Reptil joined the Initiative in attacking Stegron, who managed to take control over Komodo before Reptil launched himself at Stegron and ended up with a concussion, allowing Stegron to escape. Back at Camp Hammond, Reptil was treated by Physique before Cooper benched him for his rash actions, but Tigra vouched for Reptil and gave him a pep-talk. Reptil tracked Stegron to Wyoming, where they battled the villain and his re-animated dinosaurs, and Reptil used a sauropod tail to create a sonic boom. Reptil and the others found Moon Boy in stasis inside, and they realized that he was being held against his will by S.H.I.E.L.D. As Stegron was defeated, Reptil convinced Tigra to let Moon Boy go, and Reptil flew him to safety, knowing it would cost him a potential place in the Initiative. They hid out in Sparks with Grandpa for a few days until Tigra arrived with Ka-Zar and Zabu, and Ka-Zar offered to take Reptil to the Savage Land. After Reptil saw Moon Boy reunited with Devil Dinosaur, he accepted Ka-Zar's offer to help him find his parents.

(Enter the Heroic Age#1 (fb) - BTS) - Lopez enrolled in high school, but in time he was illegally kidnapped by Norman Osborn and H.A.M.M.E.R., and they spent weeks torturing and experimenting on Reptil to see if he could transform into full dinosaur form.

(Enter the Heroic Age#1) - Reptil was tortured again and tossed in a cell, where he was too weak to attempt any transformation except for his internal ear structure, giving him sensitive hearing. Reptil heard the guards say that Osborn had been taken down, and then heard H.A.M.M.E.R. guards kill one scientist before they came to kill him. Reptil used different power-sets to overcome his captors, but just before he was overwhelmed, Justice, Wasp (Hank Pym), and Tigra arrived to save him and recruit him.

(Avengers Academy#1 (fb) - BTS) - Reptil was given a costume made of unstable molecules and moved into the Infinite Avengers Mansion with instructors, including Tigra, Giant-Man, Justice, and Speedball, and fellow students like Mettle, Hazmat, Striker, and Finesse. Reptil impressed the others, who had also survived Osborn torture, with his skills. The teachers told the students that they represented the best of brightest of future heroes.

(Avengers Academy#1) - Veil was introduced to the other students and Reptil immediately asked for her endorsement as leader of the team. Reptil participated in a training exercise with the others before Speedball grew furious at some of the team for not being responsible enough. After Finesse caught the teachers acting suspiciously, some of the students hacked into the computers and learned that these six students had actually been selected because the Avengers believed they stood the greatest potential to be the next generation of super-villains, and they were trying to intervene early.

(Avengers Academy#2) - After Finesse walked in on Reptil in his room, he grew angry about the lack of privacy and she responded by indicating, in front of the others, that he'd never kissed a girl, then offered to remedy that. Just then, Arsenal attacked in a training exercise, and the team battled it briefly, soon learning that Quicksilver had sent it against them. The team soon trained against facsimiles of some of the Avengers' greatest foes, and Reptil had a hard time believing the teachers had anything but their best interests at heart.

(Avengers Academy#3) - Finesse kissed Reptil in front of the others, then walked away acting nonchalant. Reptil was thrilled to hear the team was planning a trip to the Raft. The students were trained in specific classes by Iron Fist, who knocked Reptil out of the air during combat training. At the Raft, Luke Cage gave them a tour and they interacted with members of the Thunderbolts as they walked by cells; Reptil was most excited about meeting Juggernaut. Soon the lights went out and Reptil realized that Veil, Mettle, and Hazmat had broken away from the group.

(Avengers Academy#4) - Reptil, baffled about how his peers had snuck away, was taken to safety with Striker and Finesse.

(Thunderbolts I#147) - After the breakout was cleaned up, Luke Cage yelled at the students.

(Heroic Age: Heroes#1 - BTS) - Captain America wrote about Reptil in his report on heroes, highlighting Reptil's potential as a hero or a villain if he had the right or wrong influences.

(Avengers Academy#5) - Steve Rogers sparred with the recruits in a training session. Later, the team went on an outing to see Wicked, and after the show, Whirlwind attacked, wanting revenge on Pym, and he held a blade to Reptil's neck, but Reptil used ankylosaurus plates to protect himself from being cut. After Whirlwind was defeated, news of Avenges Academy spread, so Giant-Man revealed the student roster publicly.

(Ant-Man and Wasp I#1) - When Anesthesia attacked, Reptil (with the face and wings of a pteranosaur) and Mettle helped look for her.

(Ant Man and Wasp I#3) - Reptil and Striker returned to help Giant-Man and Ant-Man against A.I.M., and they were flanked by Justice, Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, and Valkyrie.

(Avengers Academy#6 (fb) - BTS) - Reptil began attending counseling sessions with Tigra, but he refused to talk about his past traumas, insisting he was over them. He began to realize that the amulet had embedded itself in his chest, but kept it secret. Reptil began worrying that the knowledge they might become super-villains would become self-fulfilling prophecies for the students. He noticed Finesse and Quicksilver sneaking around and worried they might be having an affair, but Finesse continued to come to Reptil's room every night to spend time with him.

(Avengers Academy#6) - Reptil was unanimously elected to be class leader of Avengers Academy, but he was not enthusiastic about the responsibilities. Pym met with Reptil to discuss his powers, and he theorized that Reptil could not turn into specific dinosaur forms because his body had to transfer mass from one place to another, and he believed Reptil might be afraid to change completely into small dinosaurs. Pym theorized that he could implement Pym Particles into Reptil's form to help with the mass transfer, but he grew concerned when he saw the amulet, which he believed to be supernatural in origin, embedded in Reptil's flesh. When Pym tried to remove it, Reptil got a psychic vision of events thousands of years ago, involving the amulet, Devil Dinosaur, and Moon Boy, and he cried out in pain. Pym backed off, realizing Doctor Strange or Doctor Voodoo would need to come analzye the amulet, but he encouraged Reptil to talk more openly about his traumas. That night, in his room, Reptil tried talking to Finesse after they made out in his bed, and he made the mistake of calling her his girlfriend, so she left him, saying he couldn't handle her, as she shrugged off questions about Quicksilver. The next day, the media interviewed Speedball about his time as Penance and the disaster at Stamford, and Reptil grew impressed with Speedball's ability to take responsibility for his actions. Trying to embrace his role as leader, Reptil gave a media interview opportunity to Striker, then tried convincing Mettle and Hazmat that they should be in a relationship together. Later, he altered his ears for better hearing in order to hear Finesse and Quicksilver discussing how to be more effective super-villains. The next day, Mentallo escaped from prison and Reptil took the lead as they rushed to attack him. Mentallo briefly made the heroes fight each other before Reptil shifted to the full form of a small carnivore and lost control of his mind, landing on Mentallo and biting on him. The next day, the teachers suggested that Reptil meet with a counselor, and he met with Jessica Jones. When Jones was open about her trauma with the Purple Man, Reptil opened up to her about losing his parents, but he kept his doubts about Avengers Academy to himself.

(Avengers Academy#7) - Giant-Man took Reptil and the other students to supervise the prison transport of Absorbing Man, and when Finesse suggested they kill him while he was immobile, Reptil told her that isn't what heroes do. Absorbing Man escaped and Reptil was briefly stunned before Giant-Man defeated the villain.

(Avengers Academy#8) - The students watched footage online of the Hood (Parker Robbins) badly beating Tigra, and she was hurt and furious, calling a meeting to discuss ethics in superheroing, but Striker discovered the Hood was not in jail and wanted to teach him a lesson. Striker, Veil and Hazmat found the Hood and beat him up, taking a video before letting him go, and they later showed it to the teachers and students. Tigra, furious, expelled the three.

(Avengers Academy#9) - Reptil felt responsible for the expulsion, and Finesse agreed that he had displayed poor leadership skills, and he walked away in anger. Later, Tigra reversed the expulsion, but put the three students on probation.

(Avengers Academy#10) - While attending various classes, Reptil gave Veil advice on how to make amends with Speedball, who she had offended by reminding him of the Stamford disaster. When Doctor Strange examined Reptil's amulet, he stated that it was created by "a prehistoric, extradimensional sorcerer to give its wielder the abilities of dinosaurs." Later, the team visited Stamford, where Speedball warned them about the consequences of not being prepared for battle. Just then, the Cobalt Men attacked, but Speedball quickly defeated them and the team returned to the mansion.

(Amazing Spider-Man I#661) - Spider-Man was a guest instructor at Avengers Academy, focusing on secret identities and ethics, and Reptil let Spidey know how much he admired him. Spider-Man took the students on patrol in New York City, where they stopped muggers and then were attacked by Psycho-Man. The villain filled the students with hate and made them turn against Spider-Man.

(Amazing Spider-Man I#662) - Reptil attacked Spider-Man, in the form of a small spike-tailed dinosaur, but he resisted Psycho-Man's control, struggling to change back to human while begging Spider-Man to kill them before they became too dangerous. Psycho-Man sent the students to attack civilians, but Spidey helped Reptil remember that he was a hero, and he broke free of the villain's control. Reptil helped inspire Veil to break free, and soon they worked together to defeat Psycho-Man. Back at the mansion, Reptil vouched for what a great teacher Spider-Man had been.

(Avengers Academy Giant-Size#1) - Reptil, Finesse, Veil, and Striker were given the day off from school and they went to New York City. After Reptil used a raptor head to scare off an annoying dog, the heroes saw Firestar and Spider-Girl rush by. Veil and Reptil paired off and realized that Striker and Finesse were missing, and Reptil put on a hoodie to cover his head so he could use a raptor head to track the scents of the others. In an alleyway, where Reptil had followed the scent, killer robots attacked and apprehended them both, though Reptil used raptor arms and claws to fight them. Reptil woke up in a box and punched his way free, finding Spider-Girl there, and she initially attacked him, thinking him a villain. Spider-Girl and Reptil battled cat clowns and a Reptil robot before a robot of Arcade attacked, revealing that the other members of the Young Allies and Avengers Academy were in traps in Murderworld, but Reptil and Spider-Girl, since they'd escaped their boxes, would have a chance to save one person if they gained five points in a competition. The first task assigned to Reptil was to kiss a girl, so he abruptly kissed Spider-Girl, winning one point. Reptil was then assigned to bring back a vintage bottle of wine and, as he ran through the city, he got a call on a cell phone from Spider-Girl, who'd slipped him the phone. The two of them bonded over both of them having parents missing, and Reptil told Spider-Girl his real name. Reptil failed to get the wine, being underage, but soon he and Spider-Girl joined forces to trace phone numbers to find the address on Arcade's Murderworld, finding robot duplicates of the others students inside. Back at Murderworld, Reptil fought robots, saving Striker and Finesse. Soon all of the students were freed and they gathered together to defeat Arcade's robots. Reptil knocked Arcade out when he tried to escape. Spider-Girl gave Reptil her phone number.

(Avengers Academy#11) - When Veil brought Carina Walters to the mansion in an attempt to restore the Wasp to life, Korvac followed her and attacked, and many of the Avengers and "New" Avengers arrived to fight him. The students rushed Carina to a room to get her to safety, and she offered to increase their power sets by replacing their bodies with counterparts of them from the future. In these adult bodies, they would have access to increased powers without having access to the memories. The students agreed, and Reptil soon found himself inhabiting a body of his adult self, and he transformed into a full Tyrannosaurus Rex to return and fight Korvac.

(Avengers Academy#12) - Reptil thrilled in his new powers, shifting to a triceratops in the battle, but they were all horrified when the future body of Striker was killed and he was restored to his teenage self. The others were returned to teenager forms, but Reptil held on to his adult form. Though Carina warned it could harm the timestream, Giant-Man theorized that Reptil had held on to his form because it allowed him greater control over his powers, and Reptil agreed that was the case.

(Avengers Academy#13 (fb) - BTS) - Reptil's new power-set was studied and they realized that his adult self used Pym Particles to supplement his growth into large dinosaurs. Striker wanted Reptil to buy him beer.

(Avengers Academy#13) - Avengers Academy hosted a dance for teen superheroes, attended by the Young Allies, Batwing, Butterball, Komodo, Hardball, and Ultragirl. Komodo aggressively flirted with the adult-looking Reptil before learning he was 16, prompting Hardball to pick a fight with Reptil, who turned into a T-Rex to defend himself, but Giant-Man broke up the fight. Reptil put pressure on Finesse to stop working privately with Quicksilver. Later, Spider-Girl wondered about Reptil's advanced age. Reptil changed to a stegosaurus to impress Spider-Girl, then she told him she liked the way he was previously. Reptil switched back to his young form.

(Avengers Academy#14) - While the teachers were off handling a volcanic eruption in Italy, the students and Tigra got word that Electro had attacked a science facility in Paris, and Reptil convinced Tigra to let them respond. The team rushed to the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, where they were attacked by the Sinister Six. During the fight, Reptil grew wings to flap away the smoke from Mysterio, then he shifted to a full stegosaurus and battled Rhino. Reptil was badly electrocuted by Electro during the fight before the Sinister Six departed, triumphant. Reptil received treatment for burns at Avengers Mansion and he apologized to Giant-Man for his leadership failure, though Giant-Man took full responsibility and apologized to the students for not preparing them correctly.

(Avengers Academy#18 (fb) - BTS) - After the battle with Electro, Reptil realized he heals more quickly while in dinosaur form.

(Avengers Academy#14.1) - Reptil and the others fought Ruby Thursday, but she escaped, then they decided to look into Jeremy Briggs, a man with the power to change the chemical composition of things, who had been rejected from the Academy. Briggs told them how he'd been using his power and influence to help other kids who'd been rejected by the Academy, including a boy he'd been too late to help named Steve Beaulieu, who'd been killed by a Wendigo without the Avengers to guide him. Horrified, Reptil texted Pym, who assured him that Alpha Flight was handling Wendigo. Briggs proposed that the Academy kids join him, and he promised to help Reptil look for his parents, but Finesse exposed Briggs as a villain, revealing that he'd brought the Wendigo in that killed Steve. Briggs, furious, turned against them, turning the air in Reptil's lungs to water briefly before sending the students away with a warning.

(Avengers Academy#15) - When a massive criminal breakout took place at the Raft, the teachers of Avengers Academy rushed to contain it, leaving Tigra to train the students in the training room, but she soon deployed them to handle attacking Nazi robots in Washington D.C. Overwhelmed by the fight, Reptil immediately worked to save civilians.

(Avengers Academy#16) - Reptil and the others kept working to save civilians.

(Avengers Academy#17 (fb) - BTS) - Reptil saw Skadi (Sinthea Shmidt) stab Captain America (James Barnes).

(Avengers Academy#17) - Reptil shifted to full velociraptor form to help fight the Nazis, then he made sure the others weren't killing the Nazis in combat. Reptil asked Falcon (with Redwing) about Captain America, learning he'd been reported dead. As the battle ended, Tigra commended the students on their good work. Reptil took time to heal in dinosaur form as he processed with Finesse seeing civilians killed by the Nazis. They were asking Striker about how he found peace after killing a man when Greithoth (Absorbing Man) and Skirn (Titania) attacked. Reptil handled them as Finesse and Striker fled for help. The other students joined the fight and part of the mansion exploded.

(Avengers Academy#18) - Reptil shifted into a green dinosaur form to attack Greithoth, who put a hammer through Reptil's chest, defeating him, but Reptil automatically started healing magically. Striker and Finesse soon got Reptil and the defeated Veil to safety.

(Avengers Academy#19) - Reptil awoke and discovered that Greithoth had absorbed Pym Particles and was now expanding the Infinite Mansion from the Microverse to standard size, which had the potential to destroy an entire American city. Finesse triggered the mansion's self-destruction, but some would have to remain behind to trigger it. Reptil offered, but Finesse, Mettle, and Hazmat agreed to be the ones. Reptil kissed Finesse, telling her she was a true hero, and she kissed him back. At the last moment, Quicksilver took Finesse's place, and then escaped the mansion with the students as it exploded. They landed in Chicago with Giant-Man, Tigra, and Justice, and the teachers commended them, but Veil was furious at what they'd been exposed to and quit the team.

(Avengers Academy#20) - Reptil and Justice went to check on Veil in the hotel where she was staying, but she refused to engage. Reptil heard Speedball announce he was leaving the Academy. The next day, the students and teachers helped fight escaped criminals Icemaster, Aftershock, and Ember, but Jeremy Briggs arrived to defeat the criminals. Later, Justice also quit the team, and Veil left to join Briggs. The team prepared to move to the old West Coast Avengers headquarters, where the new Avengers Academy campus would be.

(Avengers Academy#21 (fb) - BTS) - At some point, the future Reptil (from Earth-11511) took over the form of his younger self, and trapped the teenage Reptil in his adult form in the future.

(Avengers Academy#21) - Trapped in the future, Reptil, stuck in his adult form, was held in a stasis tube in the future, and he called out for help.

(Avengers Academy#23) - Reptil remained trapped in the future of Earth-11511.

(Avengers Academy#25) - Reptil was let out of stasis, where he saw the future versions of the Avengers Academy students, including Hazmat, Striker, Finesse, Mettle, and Veil, and he saw that in this reality, he and Finesse had a child, the young Maria Lopez, and that he and Finesse were divorced (largely over the stress of Finesse not remembering their daughter on a daily basis). Veil explained that things were happening in the past, with the future Reptil back there in his body, but that she couldn't explain what events they were seeking to avoid. Instead, she told Reptil they needed his help or little Maria would never be born in this timeline. Reptil kissed the future Finesse and wondered how he might change the future, avoid the pain he was seeing in the room. Reptil was propelled into the past, where he landed in the middle of a battle between Hybrid and the expanded roster of Avengers Academy (including core team members White Tiger and X-23, and other students, including Juston Seyfert and his Sentinel, Batwing, Lightspeed, White Tiger, Butterball, She-Hulk (Lyra), Spider-Girl (Anya Corazon), Ricochet, Hollow, Turbo, Machine Teen, Wiz-Kid, Power Man, and Rocket Racer. Veil and Jocasta arrived to help defeat Hybrid, then Jocasta announced that the Academy needed to be shut down.

(Avengers Academy#26) - Jocasta revealed she was working with Jeremy Briggs, who was starting his own hero academy, including Hardball, Reptil, Cloud 9, and Prodigy. Reptil turned into a brontosaurus to interrupt the fight, then listened as Briggs and his team offered the Academy students a chance to join his team and be paid. Reptil challenged the others to work together even if they were at different academies, and everyone agreed. When a vote came, Reptil chose to stay at Avengers Academy, but a few others left.

(Avengers Academy#28 (fb) - BTS) - Reptil maintained the full set of memories from his future self, and he had a hard time making sense of the world for a time. He tried explaining things to Finesse, but that just caused her to pull away from him.

(Avengers Academy#27) - Lightspeed confided in Reptil that Striker had come out as gay, but then they saw Striker hold a press conference to make the announcement to the public. A fight broke out with the Runaways, when the Sentinel scanned them, and Karolina Dean briefly sparred with Reptil before the fight ended. The Runaways asked for help finding their missing dinosaur Old Lace, and they believed that Reptil's amulet could help them find the dimension she was stuck in. When Victor Mancha told White Tiger that her brother, the original White Tiger, was an inspiration as the first Hispanic superhero, Reptil shrugged and offered a mock apology for being Mexican and idolizing Captain America. After demonstrating his powers for the others, Reptil allowed Nico Minoru to cast a spell to interface with his amulet so they could locate Old Lace, and Molly held Reptil's hand as he cried out in pain. A portal opened and they stepped into an alternate realm in the past, where they found Old Lace had befriended Devil Dinosaur and Moon Boy.

(Avengers Academy#28) - Thinking they were friends, Reptil got too close to Devil Dinosaur and Moon Boy before realizing this was a version of them from before they'd met, and Devil ate Reptil, who survived by turning into a trilobite and then flying free. Giant-Man changed Devil to miniature size to contain him. Having determined that the teachers were going to try and take Molly and Klara away from the Runaways, the Runaways attacked, and Reptil changed to a stegosaurus to defend himself against Old Lace. As the fight settled down, Reptil wondered if Minoru might cast a spell to help them understand each other's perspectives. Reptil was unaware that the Hag of the Pit was watching him from afar, pleased with his progress. Back at the Academy, the spell was cast and the teams made peace with each other.

(Avengers Academy#29) - Hercules showed up as a guest instructor and got naked, demonstrating the original Olympics, and Reptil was horrified. Captain America, Hawkeye, and Quicksilver then arrived, delivering a roster of X-Men students who needed protection during the X-Men's war with the Avengers. Captain America instructed Reptil and the others to welcome the other students, but ordered them to stop the kids if they tried to leave.

(Avengers Academy#30) - Reptil tried convincing Finesse to still be with him, but she flatly refused him. She admitted that there had been something between them, but told him to stop limiting her options based on one possible future out of many. When some of the X-Men tried to leave campus, joined by Wiz-Kid, Hollow, and Ricochet, Reptil (as a triceratops) and the Academy students tried to stop them, but X-23 convinced the students to let the X-Men go if they chose. Then Sebastian Shaw attacked.

(Avengers Academy#31) - A fight between the two groups of students broke out, and Reptil changed to a giant snake and restrained Shaw for a time until the fight deescalated. The students and teachers of the academy pretended to fight to give the X-Men an opportunity to escape, with Reptil sparring with Finesse before he got tossed into Striker.

(Avengers Academy#32) - When Emma Frost, powered by the Phoenix Force, approached the campus, the Sentinel panicked and acted out. When Frost tried to destroy the Sentinel, the students prepared to defend it.

(Avengers Academy#33) - During the fight with Frost, Reptil took on a raptor form. In the end, Frost disassembled the Sentinel, but Quicksilver reassembled it. Giant-Man then disbanded Avengers Academy, telling the students each to go home because the world had grown too dangerous and they felt the students were being made targets.

(Avengers Academy#34) - Reptil and White Tiger visited Jennifer Kale, at the A.R.M.O.R. headquarters in Florida, and she ran a test on both of their amulets. The two teens asked if the amulets were good or evil, but Kale said it wasn't that simple, but she did warn them that the amulets had a price, and that if the teens couldn't pay the price, the amulets would decide for them. Hazmat called the team to New York City, where Jeremy Briggs and Jocasta had healed Veil and they watched as he provided cures for Hazmat and Mettle as well. Reptil and White Tiger were offered consultations with Enchantress (Sylvie Lushton) and Coat of Arms (Lisa Molinari) on their amulets. Briggs then revealed that he planned to depower all heroes and villains on the planet so that only he could control powers, then he shut down Jocasta when she argued and revealed he'd already cancelled the powers of the others there. The Academy students, realizing they were powerless, were restrained by Big Zero, Enchantress, and Coat of Arms, as Briggs ripped the amulet from Reptil's chest. Finesse caused an explosion, crashing herself, White Tiger, Reptil, and Lightspeed to a floor below.

(Avengers Academy#35) - X-23 and Finesse defeated Big Zero then worked with Reptil and Lightspeed to plan to steal Briggs' tech. They snuck in the building, where Reptil checked on White Tiger, who was suffering from withdrawal of her amulet. Coat of Arms attacked them, using their amulets against them.

(Avengers Academy#36) - Coat of Arms embraced the power of the two stolen amulets, manifesting a dinosaur head to fight Reptil briefly. Confronting his destiny as a "chosen one," Reptil leaped in and grabbed the amulet, then found himself talking to the Hag of the Pits in a vision. She confessed she'd created his amulet and that she'd only let him have it back if he promised to one day fight for her world and the dinosaurs even if it meant sacrificing his life, and Reptil agreed. Reptil changed to a triceratops to help defeat Coat of Arms, then they rejoined with their other teammates, seeing that Striker's face had been badly scarred. They rushed to find Briggs launching the missile that would cancel the world's superpowers.

(Avengers Academy#37) - Reptil's amulet helped him break out of the conjured Crimson Bands of Cytorrak that Enchantress had used against him, then he changed to a deinonychus and an ankylosaurus to fight back, prompting Enchantress to abandon the fight. Briggs went mad with power, but in the end was badly wounded and he bled to death as the missiles were stopped. The kids all got medical treatment.

(Avengers Academy#38 (fb) - BTS) - Reptil approached Finesse, wanting another chance at the relationship and saying that it felt like destiny to be together, but she told him she needed space.

(Avengers Academy#38) - As the Avengers Academy students prepared to face off against the X-Men students in football, Reptil tried showing Finesse a video of Joe Montana, but she thought he was flirting and walked away. Gambit gave Reptil advice to let Finesse go and let her return to him if she chose to. During the game, Reptil changed to a raptor form.

(Avengers Academy#39 (fb) - BTS) - Reptil contacted Doctor Strange in an attempt to learn more about his amulet.

(Avengers Academy#39) - Later, Reptil flirted with White Tiger on the beach before he noticed Finesse watching. When the instructors prepared to graduate the Academy kids to a higher level, Hazmat confronted them about how they knew they were recruited as they were considered most likely to be super-villains. The instructors shocked the students by offering them a chance to run a humanitarian hero group with Jocasta providing guidance and Reptil as the team leader.

(Avengers Arena#13 (fb) - BTS) - Reptil had the chance at a relationship with White Tiger, but he found a lead on his parents possibly being in another dimension, and told her he was going off to find them.

(Avengers Arena#1) - Reptil and X-23 were playing table tennis at the Academy when he was teleported against his will with X-23, Hazmat, Mettle, and Juston Seyfort (with his Sentinel) to Arcade's Arena, alongside Cullen Bloodstone, Kid Briton, Anachronism, Nara, Apex, Deathlocket, Cammi Benally, Red Raven, Darkhawk, Nico Minoru, and Chase Stein. Arcade revealed himself, saying he was locking the students in and that only one of them would leave alive. The heroes initially tried attacking Arcade, but he easily repelled them, then, to show his power, he killed Mettle.

(Avengers Arena#2) - Reptil comforted Hazmat in her grief. After an accidental fight with Deathlocket (who briefly lost control of her programming) broke out, Reptil saw Red Raven die when she tried to fly free, breaking her own neck.

(Avengers Arena#4) - Reptil, using T-Rex legs, scouted for food unsuccessfully before returning to his camp with Hazmat and X-23. Chase Stein and Nico Minoru approached and a fight nearly broke out before Minoru magically conjured a fruit tree for them. Reptil grew a pterodactyl head to eat as much fruit as possible. Chase and Reptil confided in each other about the arena bringing out their violent impulses, then a flamethrower suddenly scorched Reptil, badly wounding him.

(Avengers Arena#5 (fb) - BTS) - Before he fell unconscious, Reptil saw his attacker was Deathlocket.

(Avengers Arena#5) - Reptil lay wounded as Arcade continued toying with the others. Later, he woke, being carried on a stretcher by Hazmat and X-23, and they said they were going for supplies. Reptil told them Deathlocket had attacked them.

(Avengers Arena#6) - Reptil felt like a burden to the others as he couldn't find the strength to transform and trigger his healing faster. When Arcade blanketed the area in a trigger scent, X-23 went feral and Reptil had to change to pteradactyl form to fly Hazmat to safety. Reptil crashed, exhausted, with Hazmat in one of the few safe zones.

(Avengers Arena#11 (fb)) - Reptil lay unconscious for 13 days while Hazmat looked out for him. When he finally healed, he found that Hazmat was forcing herself to have a happy attitude, laying on the beach and dancing instead of facing reality, and he stayed at her side.

(Avengers Arena#11) - Reptil changed to a liopleuridon and hunted, fighting great white sharks to gain food. He walked up on Hazmat in her bikini, and she noticed him looking at her before she reminded him that she was poisonous. After they had a dance party on the beach and ate shark steaks and coconuts, Reptil asked Hazmat about how long they planned to hide, but she didn't want to talk about it. Just then, Nara, Bloodstone, Anachronism, X-23, and Cammi landed on their beach, having been sent there by Nico Minoru's spell after a fight with Apex. Reptil tried explaining events to the others, but they were angry with him as they'd had major conflicts in which people (Kid Briton, Juston Seyfert) had died. Reptil confronted Hazmat, pinning her down briefly in an attempt to snap her out of her daze, and she surprised him by joining with Reptil and the others in going to look for Nico.

(Avengers Arena#14) - Reptil flew above the woods to scout a path for the others, but then he went missing for three days.

(Avengers Arena#15) - Reptil returned with Nico and Chase (who still had the Darkhawk power) and they found Cullen Bloodstone had transformed into a massive monster, called the Glartrox, and was battling X-23. Reptil leapt into the fight in a raptor form but was easily tossed aside. Reptil returned to the fight, taking on the forms of multiple dinosaurs, before Nara managed to change him back to Cullen, though she was killed in the process.

(Avengers Arena#16) - When Anachronism savagely attacked Cullen, Reptil wanted to defend him, but Nico and Chase turned on Reptil instead, throwing him aside. A fight broke out and Reptil changed to a triceratops in order to fight Anachronism.

(Avengers Arena#17) - Reptil, as a triceratops, rushed at Anachronism, who'd been attacking X-23 and Hazmat.

(Avengers Arena#18) - When Hazmat nearly exploded after her suit ruptured, Reptil realized that she'd harm anyone nearby so he swiftly changed into a mosasaurus and grabbed Hazmat in his mouth, submerging her in the water nearby. When the explosion went off, the others were protected. Later, the instructors of Avengers Academy found the students and got medical help for the badly wounded Reptil, and a new containment suit for Hazmat. Later, the videos from the arena were uploaded by Arcade for the general public to view.

(Inhumanity: The Awakening#1) - Reptil worked with other Academy students in cleaning up the wreckage of Attilan.

SECRET WARS III HAPPENED

(Invincible Iron Man I#600 (fb) - BTS) - Reptil was recruited to be part of Leonardo da Vinci's new super-hero venture.

(Invincible Iron Man I#600) - Striker trained with the Armor Squad, Striker, Cloud 9, Blade, Trauma, and others.

(King in Black: Spider-Man#1) - When symbiotes attacked New York City, Reptil worked to save civilians, including Mrs. Volkov. Spider-Man initially attacked him in his pterodactyl form, having thought Reptil was one of the symbiotes, then the two teamed up to save more civilians. During the fight, Reptil changed into a mosasaurus and held off a symbiote dragon until Spider-Man electrocuted it.

(King in Black: Spider-Man#1/2) - After texting his grandpa to check in, Reptil teamed up with Spider-Man to fight more symbiotes while remembering his own adventures.

(Reptil#1 (fb) - BTS) - After C.R.A.D.L.E. started, banning teenage super heroes from operating, Reptil went back to live with his grandpa, Vicente, whose health had taken a turn for the worse.

(Reptil#1) - Reptil helped his grandfather move in with Gloria, Julian, and Eva. Julian showed Humberto an app that would teach him more about dinosaurs. When Humberto learned that Gloria had framed photos of his parents to place on the altar for the dead, he insisted that his parents were still alive. Vicente lost his temper with Reptil, saying they were all grieving, and Reptil confronted his grandfather on keeping his health issues private. Eva and Julian took Reptil down to Santee Alley, where they got tacos from Enrique. They were soon attacked by Megalith, a man in stone coverings who attacked with stone golems that he controlled, and Reptil fought him to save civilians. Megalith soon pinned Reptil, preparing to rip the amulet out of his chest, but Eva revealed she had learned some magic spells and she cast a force spell, but then she fainted. Reptil fought back against Megalith, who said he knew where Reptil's parents were.

(Reptil#2) - Reptil continued battling Megalith, who soon fled as the police arrived. Enrique covered for the others, while Reptil, Eva, and Julian fled. At home, Eva talked about the magical training she had been undergoing, and Julian revealed he'd seen Megalith using an amulet that was similar to Reptil's, Julian challenged Reptil to use his powers more and be more confident in himself. Vicente saw an image of Megalith and felt he looked like the billionaire Henry Desjardin, who ran the company Megalith. Seeking to get more intel, Eva helped open a portal to the Dinosaur World dimension, and Julian gave Reptil the new costume he had designed him. Avoiding a dinosaur stampede, Reptil carried Eva and Julian over the herd with wings until they found the Hag of the Pits, who explained that she'd had a son, Sarsen, who'd turned against her, and that she'd once created the dinosaur amulet to help save her world, but she'd tossed it into the pits and it must have split in two. The Hag gave stones to Eva that would help amplify her powers. Dinosaurs closed in on them and Reptil transformed fully, losing control of himself.

(Reptil#3) - In Dinosaur World, Reptil lost control and went after Julian and Eva, but the Hag of the Pits helped change him back to human form, then Eva opened a portal home. Julian shared with Humberto about his coming out experience and how therapy had helped his whole family come to terms with things. After bidding farewell to Gloria and Papa Vic, Reptil, Eva, and Julian went to the home of Henry Desjardin to investigate Megalith. Reptil changed into a large dinosaur to bypass the fence outside, then they broke in, where they learned the truth about Megalith, who Eva briefly trapped in a stasis spell. Megalith admitted that he was Sarsen and that he'd been manipulating Henry Desjardin for years, forcing him to build tech so that Sarsen could pose as Desjardin, and that he funded the paleontological digs that Isaac and Jessica had gone on, as Sarsen had wanted to ind the amulet. Sarsen then admitted that after Humberto had first bonded with half the amulet, Isaac and Jessica had found the second half and had started to bond with it, but Sarsen stole it from them, leaving their souls trapped in the amulet and leaving their bodies dead and buried. Reptil battled Megalith and ended up wounded before growing wings and flying his cousins back home, where he passed out.

(Reptil#4 (fb) - BTS) - Papa Vic convinced Gloria to let Reptil heal in her home, while Eva and Julian continued looking into Megaltih and his plans, determining that he planned to rule Dinosaur World, opening a portal that could possibly destroy Los Angeles.

(Reptil#4) - After talking to Papa Vic, Reptil went with his cousins to a cultural celebration, where they saw Enrique. Reptil wore his new costume, proudly displaying his amulet for the public. Megalith attacked Reptil and his cousins, and the community stood with Reptil against Megalith, and Reptil found himself able to assume full dinosaur form, in the form of a quetzalcoatlus, and remain in control. Many dinosaurs passed through the portal that Megalith opened, but Reptil managed to unite them behind him, and Reptil soon snatched Megalith's amulet, then smashed it, knowing his parents were still with him in his heart, then he shoved Megalith through the portal back to the Hag of the Pits in Dinosaur World. Eva vowed to keep the amulet shards and try and find Reptil's parents. Reptil put out a public statement about being a hero.

(Champions IV#9) - Reptil celebrated the news that C.R.A.D.L.E. had been disbanded.

(Marvel Voices: Communidades#1/1 (fb) - BTS) - Eva Quintero said goodbye to Reptil, having been enrolled in Strange Academy.

(Marvel Voices: Communidades#1/5) - Reptil was making tamales when Glo's cat stole his corn husks. He had to chase the cat down to get the husks back.

(Marvel Voices: Communidades#1/14) - Reptil shared a meal with other super heroes.

Comments: Created by Christos Gage and Steve Uy.

Reptil made his initial debut on the Super Hero Squad show. He has also been a playable character in the Marvel Super Hero Squad Online game, as well as Lego Marvel's Avengers.

Also, his name is pronounced "Rep-teel", not "Rep-tyle."

In Avengers Academy I#11, Carina Walters shifts the members of the Avengers Academy into the bodies of their adult selves, presumably shifting the teenage bodies of the kids into the future, where perhaps their adult personas took over the younger bodies of their counterparts.

In Avengers Academy I#12, Striker is killed and thus reverts back to his teenage body. When the kids all got their real bodies back, Reptil stayed in his adult body, but in Avengers Academy I#13, he shifts back into his young form again. This may have been the point when the adult Reptil comes back in time and takes over his younger self's form, thus trapping the young Reptil in his adult form in the future, but this isn't revealed until Avengers Academy I#21. For the purpose of this profile, I have assumed that Reptil stays in control of his own form until Avengers Academy I#20, and then his form is taken over in between before issue #21.

In his alternate future, Reptil had had a child, Maria, with Finesse, and had gained greater power over his dinosaur-shifting powers, using Pym Particles. However, this timeline has been rewritten in the present, making it one of many alternate futures out there.

Dennis Hopeless deliberately left it ambiguous as to whether Reptil had survived Avengers Arena or not. "In my mind he sacrificed his life to save the others but we wanted to leave a window open for future writers." Obviously subsequent writers have now confirmed he is still alive (or, given this is Marvel, he might have been resurrected).

While it was initially believed that Vicente was the father of Isaac, because he once mentioned mourning his son, it was revealed in the Reptil series that he is the father of both Jessica and Gloria, and thus the grandfather of Humberto, Julian, and Eva. Thus it seems that Vicente, who is also called Papa Vic, has a different last name than Lopez, but this is yet to be revealed.

Reptil received a profile in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z Update#2 (August, 2010).

After his parents went missing on a paleontological dig, Humberto went to live with his grandfather in Sparks, Nevada.

(Reptil#3 (fb) - BTS) - Sarsen, a power-hungry man from the Dinosaur World realm, posed as Henry Desjardin, the billionaire, and began funding paleontological digs for Isaac and Jessica to go on, as he wanted to find a mystic amulet his mother, the Hag of the Pits, had created.

After Humberto bonded with the amulet, Isaac and Jessica went on another dig and found the other half of the amulet. It started to bond with them, but Sarsen interrupted the process, which left Isaac and Jessica's souls trapped within. Sarsen then buried their bodies.

(Reptil#3) - Humberto, Eva, and Julian battled Sarsen, seeing Isaac and Jessica's souls within the other half of the amulet.
