History:
(Spider-Man: Marvels Snapshots#1 (fb) - BTS) - Raised in New York, Ronnie Schatz was friend to Victor "Dutch" Hollander as youths and he was impressed with how Dutch could customize monster model kits. Both were similarly engaged in minor criminal activities, although Ronnie had dreams of increasing his criminal impact with the rising numbers of costumed people with super-powers or augmented with advanced technology.
As an adult, Ronnie would take up
occasional mercenary work with crimelords such as the Owl. He now and
again also hired technological devices from the Tinkerer to aid him in
criminal activities and sometimes had Dutch accompany him, although
Dutch was not fond of relying on such technology.
(Spider-Man: Marvels Snapshots#1) - Ronnie stole an ATM cash machine using anti-gravity gloves he'd hired from the Tinkerer and walked down subway tracks with accomplice Dutch as an escape route afterward , but they stumbled across Spider-Man and Silvermane engaged in a fierce fight. Unable to cleanly pass with the levitating ATM, they dumped the cash machine even though Ronnie needed to pay the Tinkerer for hiring the gloves. The duo went separate ways via trains while Ronnie considered mercenary work for the Owl for extra money. Ronnie later used a handheld teleporter to jump into Dutch's apartment. To alleviate tension, the duo went to a nearby bar where Ronnie introduced Dutch to his sister, Vivian (who disapproved of her brother's felonious ways). Instant mutual attraction left Ronnie feeling isolated and he left. Dutch and Vivian dated for several months, during which Dutch ended his criminal activities and stopped contact with Ronnie, who had trouble finding a competent replacement for Dutch.
Having heard Dutch and Vivian were
planning to move interstate, Ronnie found the couple working as
bartenders and suggested they would still need
large savings for the move. Dutch was tempted and secretly met with
Ronnie. As the Punisher's van rolled past the bar outside, Ronnie
revealed he hoped to steal an armored suit and become
a villain, but they were interrupted by an angry Vivian. Eventually,
Vivian reluctantly saw the advantage
to scoring fast money. Several months passed until the opportunity
arose, and Ronnie and Dutch got ready in a van while Iron Fist and Luke
Cage fought Comanche
and Shades,
obstructing traffic. Ronnie used an iono-magnetic wave charge from the
Tinkerer to disable the unmarked van carrying
the Force armor.
Dumping the unconscious couriers, they stole the van. Ronnie put word
out the armor was for sale, but this instead started a
destructive manhunt by the Hand, Hobgoblin (Kingsley) and Maggia, but
it was Blacklash (Scarlotti) who found them and demanded the Force
suit. Suddenly Spider-Man dropped in, distracting the villain, and
Ronnie and Dutch ran off. Recognizing their luck, Ronnie followed
Dutch's idea to sell the Force armor cheap to the less-dangerous
Tinkerer, who would circulate that Ronnie and Dutch no longer had the
armor. Ronnie still had high hopes he could crack into super-villainy.
Dutch emphasized that they were only ever small-time crooks, and left a
frustrated and lonely Ronnie behind before moving to California with
Vivian.
