History:
(Spectacular Spider-Man I#126 (fb) - BTS) - Gladys worked as an
accountant in the Daily Bugle's bookkeeping department, keeping tabs on
the payment of freelance employees and their contributions to the
paper's various savings plans. She was particularly concerned about
photographer Peter Parker who recently had stopped submitting payment
vouchers.
(Spectacular Spider-Man I#126) - Glady happened to run into Peter
at the Bugle and rather bluntly asked where he was keeping his vouchers.
Parker explained their absence: he simply hadn't received any
assignments lately. Gladys replied that he ought to hustle a little more
in order to live and keep up his contributions to the company savings
plan. Unaware of the plan's existence, the perennially strapped for cash
photographer asked Gladys how much he'd unwittingly saved over the past
year or so. Doing some quick math, she estimated the amount at
approximately 2112 dollars and 33 cents. Relieved he could now pay his
back rent and feed himself, Peter asked to withdraw the money, ignoring
Gladys' plea to save it for a rainy day. To Peter, it was pouring.
(Spectacular Spider-Man I#126 - BTS) - Still not approving of Peter's decision, Gladys made sure he got his money the next day.

In the grand tradition of celebrating my Marvunapp
milestones by profiling the ultra obscure that left an impression on me
Stu
Pfaffenberger, Sam
Burgh and Thaddeus
Hatcher are joined by Gladys. Reading the issue as a kid, I had no
idea what a pension or savings plan was, but it sure sounded good.
Gladys only appeared once to date and wasn't given a last name. When
contacted, her creator Danny Fingeroth was kind enough to explain he
based Gladys on Millie Shuriff, a long time Marvel/Atlas/Magazine
Management staffer who handled freelance pay vouchers. Fingeroth
suggested adding 'Shuriff' as her last name.
Incidentally, there's an actual Millie Shuriff who debuted in Secret
Wars II#3.She worked as a bookkeeper for Vinnie Corbo, the New
York crime boss who befriended the Beyonder. Danny Fingeroth suggested
Gladys and Millie might be related.
