Powers/Abilities: As an average example of a
carnivorous Xanthian Boulder Crusher, Snakes Eyes is an extremely large
creature (compared to Earth creatures) that can survive in air
and water environments on Earth. It has instinctual intelligence with
flute-like
piping for basic communication; certain vibrational frequencies (such
as from a specially tailored Kymellian flute) can
render it comatose or make it susceptible to commands. Like other
Boulder Crushers, it can hypnotize prey with direct eye contact before
the victim falls
unconscious (lasting about one hour) so that the beast can devour the
prey; other Boulder Crushers are immune to the effects of the gaze. It
displays
superhuman strength, being able to smash through concrete, and is near
bulletproof with extremely fast short bursts of snake-like speed. It
has
instinctive fighting ability and coils around targets like Terran
snakes (although its backbone differs to any Terran species). Its head
is about 50% wider than its body width (which is
mostly about 6'), behind which are flaps (or hood) that it can flare
out during
stress or aggression, and its mouth has multiple sharp, long fangs. It
is averse to bright light.
Height: 120'
length (by approximation)
Weight: 1600 lbs. (by
approximation)
Eyes: Black/dark brown
Hair: None (red-magenta scales)
History:
(Marvel Team-Up Annual#7/1 (fb) - BTS) - The cosmic
Elder being Collector kidnapped a Xanthian Boulder Crusher, which he
named Snake Eyes, for his giant collection of intergalactic sentient
creatures, as well as a Kymellian flute that would pacify the creature.
He kept it captive and used its hypnotizing gaze to knock out any
unruly or resistant new captives.
(Marvel Team-Up Annual#7/1) - Now on Earth and having
already imprisoned Spider-Man (Peter Parker, for his symbiote suit),
the Collector used the Kymellian flute to control Snake Eyes' gaze to
knock out the newly captured super hero Marrina (due to her Plodex
heritage, although she had signaled her Alpha Flight team members for
help just prior). However, Spider-Man broke free and Alpha Flight
(Aurora, Northstar, Puck, Sasquatch) smashed through into the
Collector's spaceship, causing pandemonium. The Collector again used
his
flute to awaken Snake Eyes to subdue the heroes, but Spider-Man broke
the flute. Its eyes webbed by Spider-Man to block its dangerous gaze,
Snake Eyes thrashed wildly, breaking cages open to dangerous aliens
until it escaped by ramming through the hull and
fell into the sea below.
(Power Pack I#9) - Off the
coast of Maine, a small
fishing vessel captained by Ted Harrison hauled up Snake Eyes in its
net. It thrashed wildly, hypnotizing Harrison, who accidentally
triggered the foghorn. The sound knocked out Snake Eyes; now docile,
the creature was taken to the Coney Island public aquarium for display.
Later, the Power children excitedly told their Kymellian spaceship
Friday about the "serpent" exhibition they were going to; Friday
commented on its similarity to a species it was familiar with but
dismissed it as coincidence. The next day, the Power children were
taken by their grandfather to the aquarium. However, bored Katie Power
played her grandfather's oboe, which wakened Snake Eyes once more and
it smashed its way through the aquarium and amusement park. With
Energizer and Mass-Master knocked out, Friday guided Gee and Lightspeed
to drop Snake Eyes far away from people into the sea. Hearing of the
chaos, Marrina arrived
and spoke with the children and Friday before pursuing Snake Eyes.
(Power Pack I#10) - Friday carried Power Pack to the
location of Marrina and Snake Eyes, which attacked as they neared. Gee
played a flute but this made it more aggressive (Marrina suggested he'd
instead given an attack command). Coordinated attacks from the heroes
caused Snake Eyes to flee but the heroes knew they had to end its
threat. Finding a rusted sunken ship, they lured and trapped Snake Eyes
inside the hull. Marrina's alien chemical-coated claws temporarily
blinded the beast, allowing Gee to raise the ship and Friday to pull
the old ship into the remote Arctic ice fields where the cold put the
creature into forced hibernation. Power Pack hoped that the Collector
would eventually return for Snake Eyes.
(Power Pack I#17 (fb) - BTS) - Power Pack felled the powerful Snark Prince Jakal; Friday took him to the Arctic and lay him next to Snake Eyes for the ice cold to keep him unconscious.
(Power Pack I#23) - Snarks looking for Jakal found
him next to the inert body of Snake Eyes. The Snarks were
impressed that Power Pack had captured the Xanthian creature.

There are slight variations in the illustrated length and width of Snake Eyes.
In Marvel Team-Up Annual#7/1, Snake Eyes is colored green with red belly scales, but later magenta scales in the Power Pack story. However, the MTU cover also shows Snake Eyes colored magenta, so let's put the coloring confusion down to environmental effects (or internal lighting) of the Collector's spaceship in the MTU story.

CLARIFICATIONS
:
Snake Eyes has no known connections to:
Ted Harrison was the captain of a small fishing vessel off the coast of Maine, USA. One of the nets hauled up the alien Snake Eyes, but thrashing free of the raised net, the serpentine beast used its hypnotizing gaze on him. However, Harrison fell back and accidentally triggered the ship's foghorn, which had the right vibrational frequency to knock out the alien beast.
--Power Pack I#9
The Kymellian flute was fashioned through Kymellian
sorcery and provided instant communication and control over a Xanthian
Boulder Snake (when played correctly). It was about 1.5' long and made
of unrevealed materials (possibly ceramic in nature) but fragile enough
to be broken when dropped. The Collector used one to control Snake Eyes
but a Spider-Man destroyed it by dropping it in a later melee to stop
Collector using Snake Eyes as a weapon.
