History: (Marvel Mystery Comics I#3/6) - Bill Stern was an American soldier of fortune who went to fight on the side of France prior to his nation's involvement in World War I. He became a top sergeant and was sent to attack Germany's Siegfried Line.
Stern led his men out of their trenches and into No Man's Land but they were spotted by Germans and fired upon. Stern led 20 of his men into a shell-hole but the rest of his squad was reported dead. To prevent further casualties among his men, Stern crawled forward alone until he reached a German fort. Once he was close to the fort, he hurled a grenade into the fort then blew on his whistle to summon his men forward. Thanks to Stern's leadership, the fort was captured.
Comments: Created by David C. Cooke and Bill Everett.
I'm not normally enamored with text stories but this is a rare exception for me because it was illustrated with new art by Wild Bill Everett! I believe the only other text story he drew new art for Marvel was the Devil-God.
Thanks to Ron Fredricks for cleaning up the main image.
