Known Relatives: Belasco (father)
Aliases: None Base of Operations: Unrevealed; formerly a base in Otherplace/limbo; formerly Department H base, Toronto, Ontario; formerly Liveworld; formerly Gamma Flight Headquarters, Winnipeg, Canada First Appearance: Alpha Flight I#76 (November, 1989) Powers/Abilities: She sometimes projects mystic (or illusory?) flames skipping around her body. Witchfire’s innate senses allow her to detect,
identify and locate all forms of mystic energy near her; at quieter
moments she can attune these to sense non-mystical forces such as
emotions or life energies. She naturally heals slightly faster than normal.
At the height of her power, she can regenerate a severed hand within
minutes. She uses various forms magics, including: egocentric magic, via
tapping into her own innate, spiritual energies, such as her mystic
senses, telepathic communication, and levitation. ecocentric magic, via
tapping into the mystic energies of Earth and her local environment,
such as projecting mystic bolts, formation of shields, and
illusion-casting. exocentric magic, via tapping into the extradimensional energies of mystic principalities, such as Agamotto and Hezaba, via
verbalized spells (her spells utilized words that resembled Latin
words). She was trained in this matter, at least in part, by Shaman. and, presumably, following her demonic transformation, necromantic magic, drawing from the dead and mystic sacrifice Among her demonstrated abilities are shields against flame and/or shields to contain a being or energies or even to keep a being or energies separated into component part, as well as shields against physical damage, psychic influence by others, and/or magic; pain-inducers; spells of attunement to cause like to seek like (for example, for falling metal and wood to be drawn to metal and wood, respectively, on the ground (rather than striking a person)); generating Agamotto's light to soothe and comfort (perhaps similar to that from the Eye of Agamotto); and spells to end mind-control. She has a natural affinity for flame control, physical regeneration, teleportation abilities, matter transformation and the opening of dimensional gates. She can project mystic blasts from her eyes or blasts from her hands that can cause physical destruction or frying someone's mind. |
In her normal form she has two tiny black horns, but she generally hides these either with magic or by wearing her hair over them. When her powers are amplified by accessing her demonic heritage, her horns grow in size, becoming thicker and more red. While backed by Belasco's power, she could transform (or at least make it appear so via illusion-casting) large physical structures, such as Department H's Toronto base. She could also reshape masonry at will to bind or crush those around her. When possessing the bloodstone amulets and perhaps if accessing the power of Belasco's domain, she could summon and control various demon-creatures. Additionally, she could slaughter various demons and even overpower a demon such as S'ym. She wields an unspecified magical sword that can
be used against Magik's soulsword without shattering or having its
power neutralized. The sword can also be used to severely injure even a
powerful sorceress such as Magik and/or a demon as powerful as S'ym
(although this may have only been when she controlled Belasco's domain
and/or held one or more bloodstone amulets). She formerly used a mystic staff (pointed on one end with a spherical handle) to focus her spells. She can retract a fragment of the soul of a being
of mystic potential and form that fragment into a bloodstone, which she
can place within one of the bloodstone amulets. She has briefly used the bloodstone amulets, the
full power of which she can use to open a portal to allow the Mabdhara
(N'Garai masters) into another realm, such as Otherplace/limbo. Weight: 120 lbs. Eyes: Often solid white; sometimes yellow/red/glowing with fire Hair: Red |
History:
(Alpha Flight I#80 (fb) - BTS) - Gamma
Flight was formed via manipulation from Llan the Sorcerer, who sought a
confrontation between the two groups so that he could channel the
energy from the violence to unlock the Gateway of Night, a portal to
dark and evil realms.
(Alpha Flight I#114) - Witchfire and the rest of
Beta Flight were sent to the Houghton Chemical Research Facility in
Sudbury to deal with the threat of the "Son of the Jackal." She was
frustrated when the police Chief Conrad tried to send them away and
have Alpha Flight sent instead, at which point Persuasion took control
of the chief. Pathway then transported Beta Flight into the facility,
and she sent Manikin to investigate, but the "Jackal" smashed through
the door and slashed Manikin's prime Whitman Knapp form. After Whitman Knapp collapsed, virtually lifeless, Witchfire demanded that the "Jackal" provide the antidote to for the poison. When the "Jackal" threatened to kill a guard, Witchfire accessed previously untapped mystic power and fired a blast that incapacitated the "Jackal." Having felt like she had been reaching the "Jackal," Pathway chastised Witchfire for striking him down. (Alpha Flight I#115) - Witchfire contacted Department H, notifying them of the critical situation, but received no response. She checked back on Knapp's condition, but Pathway blamed her for having fried the mind of the Jackal, preventing him from telling them what poisons his claws were tipped with. Agreeing with the blame, Witchfire allowed an EMT to take Knapp for further care while silently cursing whoever was supposed to have been on monitor duty. At the Bethune Memorial Hospital, as doctors sought to treat Knapp, who was now covered in a cocoon-like structure, Witchfire stood vigil alongside Pathway and Persuasion. (Alpha Flight I#116) - As Witchfire communed to try to save Knapp, Persuasion's grief cut through her commune, but she considered that while no one blamed her for Whitman's condition, that they should. Regardless, she resolved that she would do anything to save him, even if it cost her her immortal soul... (Alpha Flight I#116 - BTS) - "In a place far removed from what we understand as reality, cold laughter greeted Witchfire's thoughts. (Alpha Flight I#119 - BTS / Alpha Flight I#120 (fb) - BTS / All-New Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z#12: Witchfire) - The Hardliners (anti-superhuman activists supporting Canada’s Paranormals Registration Act) invaded the Flight’s Department H headquarters and beat Witchfire severely. (Alpha Flight I#120 (fb) - BTS) - Despite surgery which required the shaving of her head, she soon recovered. (Alpha Flight I#120 (fb) - BTS) - Her head bandaged and her right arm in a sling, Witchfire sat silently as Heather noted that Witchfire would survive. (All-New Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z#12: Witchfire) - however, the dark archaic voices in her head grew stronger... |
.
(Alpha Flight I#122) -
Witchfire joined Goblyn, Persuasion, Pathway, and Wyre in a training
exercise where the others fought against a demonic version of
Witchfire. Guardian interrupted the session, noting that Goblyn and
Pathway were supposed to be in school, and Witchfire was supposed to be
recovering from...but she never finished the thought, as Witchfire
apparently just walked past her. When the Goddess began to influence others on Earth (the Infinity Crusade) and the Alpha members departed to deal with the situation, (Alpha Flight I#123 (fb) - BTS) - Belasco revealed Witchfire's true nature and birthright to her. (Alpha Flight I#122) - Witchfire understood her dark heritage, succumbed to her demonic nature and blasted Wyre out of the building. When Whitman Knapp and Persuasion investigated, Witchfire blasted the latter and threatened the former. (Alpha Flight I#123 (fb) - BTS) - Witchfire transformed Department H into a demonic form. (Alpha Flight I#123) - After Guardian, Northstar, and Wildheart returned to their base, Witchfire listened in on Wildheart's thoughts, considering that the Goddess was the personification of everything her father despised and that she would tear the Goddess' bleeding heart out. As the Alphans approached the building, Wildheart could sense the demonic influence, which called to the beast within him. These creatures attacked the Alphans as they entered, threatening to overwhelm them. Holding Knapp to the wall with hands mystically extended from the walls, Witchfire told him that her true form had emerged from the pathetic human shell in which she had been hidden and that Persuasion, Feedback (who was not shown anywhere in this arc that I saw, although Knapp noted that he had seen Albert struck down with Kara), Pathway, Goblyn, and Wyre were all dead. Additionally, as the Goddess influenced Sasquatch and Talisman, Witchfire influenced them in the opposite direction, against religion. As Wyre recovered from his fall, Witchfire confronted Guardian. (Alpha Flight I#124) - Witchfire trapped Guardian, Northstar, and Wildheart within mystic spheres, and when Whitman tried to reach her human side, she placed a mystic seal over his mouth. She further noted her goal to deliver Earth to her father's masters. (Alpha Flight I#124 - BTS) - From his castle, presumably in Limbo/Otherplace, Belasco considered that his daughter was everything he could have wished for, and that the murders she would perform would bind her to him, body and soul. (Alpha Flight I#124) - Transforming into his "apeman" form, Manikin punched Witchfire down, and then Guardian blasted her back and Northstar slammed into her at high speed. However, when Manikin (back in his prime form) argued that they should try to reach her human side, Witchfire blasted the heroes with fiery energies. |
.
. . After Manikin (as "Highbrow") teleported Guardian to safety, Wyre ambushed Witchfire, covering her mouth with his hand and piercing her body with his spikes/tendrils. When he prepared to kill her, however, Guardian ordered him to let her go, and Manikin related all the good she had done and convinced her to let out all of the badness. Screaming in agony, Witchfire expelled her dark energies and reverted to her human form (with short hair and in her Beta Flight costume), who kneeled on the ground, lamenting how close she had come to killing them all. Puck, Sasquatch, Talisman, and Windshear, the Alphans under the Goddess' sway then appeared and insisted that Witchfire must die for having committed crimes against the Goddess. Windshear stunned her and Manikin with a hard air blast, but Guardians blasted them back, and they resolved to return to the Goddess' side rather than fight this time. (Alpha Flight I#124 (fb) - BTS) - Witchfire's memories of her demonic self were closed off. (Alpha Flight I#124 - BTS) - Belasco laughed...and he was first revealed as Witchfire's father. (Alpha Flight I#130) - Witchfire was present (back in her Beta Flight costume and with short hair) as General Clarke suspended Alpha Flight. After Northstar angrily stormed out, Vindicator told the others that their future was theirs to decide. (New Mutants III#16 (fb) - BTS) - In Otherplace/limbo, agents of General Ulysses found a skeleton of Magik (Illyana Rasputin), from which they claimed the bloodstone amulet. (New Mutants III#16 (fb)) - Witchfire led an army of demons to assault the military base and claim the amulet. (New Mutants III#18 (fb) - BTS) - Some of the demons invaded the hatchery where the mutants were held. The mutants slew the demons, although one of the mutants had his face torn off. |
.
(X-Infernus#1) - With Belasco having been seemingly destroyed by Magik
with a bloodstone (circa New X-Men II#41), Witchfire summoned a meeting
of Hell-Lords (Blackheart, Dormammu, Hela, Mephisto, Satannish) and
informed them that she wished to claim his domain and seat at their
table. After they questioned both her and Belasco's right to sit with them, she showed them Belasco's bloodgem amulet, containing three bloodstones (which would grant the power of elder gods (the Mabdhara, aka N'Garai masters, as opposed to the warrior caste), and told them that she would use it to take control of the limbo-realm Otherplace. She asked them to stay away from Otherplace, and when she had destroyed the Darkchilde (Magik) and taken the throne, she would return and take a seat at their table. Mephisto advised her that if she took back her father's kingdom she MAY have a seat with them and a place in their larger goals. Her yes crackling with energy, she replied, "Excellent." (X-Infernus#2) - Within her home in limbo, a demon minion advised "Lady Witchfire" that the Darkchilde had vanished in the middle of a battle but that she was gone from limbo (as she had traveled to Earth to reclaim the Soulsword). Appreciating that Magik's departure similarly removed her power over limbo, Witchfire donned the bloodstone amulet and prepared to reclaim her lands. (X-Infernus#2 (fb) - BTS) - Witchfire assaulted the Darkchilde's castle, slaughtering many of her demons and defeating and chaining up S'ym. (X-Infernus#2) - Witchfire remarked at how "daddy thought I didn't like getting my hands dirty." When S'ym warned Witchfire that the Darkchilde would return, she assured him that she was counting on it, and when he told her that her forces were loyal and would rally to her side, Witchfire impaled S'ym with her glowing sword and countered that the demons were not loyal but fearful and that she simply needed to make them fear her more. Seeking the bloodstones to restore her soul, Magik teleported back to her castle. S'ym warned her to get away and informed her of Belasco's daughter just before Witchfire attacked. (X-Infernus#3) - As they battled, Magik told Witchfire that she had no right to be there, but Witchfire -- as her horns began to grow -- countered that she had every right, while Magik was the one who had no place there. She then advised Magik that all that was Belasco's was now hers, including Magik's soul; as she said this, she fired a fiery blast that knocked the soulsword from Magik's hands, after which she allowed Magik to see that she held the bloodstone amulet. |
.
Magik demanded Witchfire give her the amulet, but Witchfire told her to
come and get it, sidestepped her attack, and then used the amulet blast
her with mystic energy and impale her with her (Witchfire's) sword.
With a pool of blood surrounding the fallen Magik and her soulsword, Witchfire then apparently claimed the bloodstone amulet Magik had held, which contained a bloodstone created from Pixie. Asking why keep the stones divided when true power lied in unity, Witchfire then transferred Pixie's bloodstone into the amulet containing Magik's bloodstones. Drawn by sensation the manipulation of her soul fragment, Pixie teleported into Magik's castle, where she glimpsed a demonic version of herself in a mirror before encountering Witchfire and the chained-up Magik. When Pixie rushed to her amulet and found her bloodstone missing, Witchfire grabbed, called her apprentice, reverted her to demon form, and then began to pull another soul fragment from her. When a group of X-Men (Colossus, Mercury, Nightcrawler, Rockslide, Wolverine) teleported in, intending to rescue Pixie and Magik, Witchfire took control of Colossus and Wolverine, forcing the former to attack Rockslide and the latter to attack Mercury. Although Nightcrawler was exhausted from the effort, Magik instructed him to take Pixie's soul dagger and stab her, which he did. (X-Infernus#4) - Witchfire completed converting the soul fragment drawn from Pixie into a bloodstone. However, before she could add it the amulet, Nightcrawler used the soulsword to slice off Witchfire's hand that held the bloodstone, causing both to drop to the ground. Witchfire blasted Nightcrawler away with mystic fire, after which Witchfire reformed her hand and then cracked open the castle and the dimensional barrier, summoning the N'Garai masters to her and shouting, "You are now free! Join me!! The council will have no choice but to bow before us!" However, she was then blasted by Magic, whom Pixie had freed. As the other X-Men engaged the N'Garai masters, Magik again battled Witchfire, who unleashed a powerful blast she felt would consume her. However, Mercury had taken the form of Magik's armor, protecting her from the blast, and she then extended a spiked limb to impale Witchfire. Magik then used her soulsword to restore Pixie back to her non-demonic form, and the two of them used the soulsword and soul dagger to strike the bloodstone amulet simultaneously, dislodging the most recent bloodstone and banishing the N'Garai masters back to their realm. As Pixie tried to reach the amulet amidst the resultant vortex, Witchfire recovered it instead, mocking Pixie that that part of Pixie still belonged to her and mocking her as "apprentice." Witchfire apparently escaped (or was pulled through) the castle walls. |
(New Mutants III#17 (fb) - BTS) - The "Inferno Babies" forcibly took the bloodstone amulet from Witchfire. (New Mutants III#17) - Magik sent demons to capture Witchfire, and they brought Witchfire to Magik, bloody and in chains. After Witchfire confirmed to "shadow-soul" (Magik) that the "humans that walk with demons" (Inferno Babies) had taken the bloodstone amulet, Magik told her that her weakness had upset the order of limbo. Witchfire countered that it was Magik who had given them passage to their realm. Witchfire subsequently advised Magik to follow the blood-thumbed road and they would find their home, noting that she told her this freely as it would only lead to her destruction. Witchfire further added "You have held your sword long enough for me to tell you what you need. There is no reason to hold it any longer." As she departed, Magik instructed her demons, "See that she suffers." (Fear Itself: The Fearless#8 (fb) - BTS) - As Sin gathered the mystic hammers of the Worthy and allied with the Thule Society, mystic beings gathered to join her cause, including Witchfire. (Fear Itself: The Fearless#8) - Crossbones showed Daimon Hellstrom some of the beings gathering to Sin's cause, including Witchfire. (Fear Itself: The Fearless#10) - When Brunnhilde led an army of heroes to Sin's base, Crossbones called in the recruits, including Witchfire, who joined the battle. |

As far as I can tell, her name, Ananym, was first revealed in Alpha Flight I#94 when Shaman called her that.
She invoked "Hezaba's eyes" in Alpha Flight I#111.
Witchfire was shown in a photograph in Alpha Flight I#121.
At the end of Alpha Flight Special II#1 (June, 1992), Witchfire is included in a picture of those who were the Legacy of the "The Flight."
Kudos to C.B. Cebulski for pulling a comeback appearance 15 years since Witchfire had been last seen!
