History:
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Eight: Cut to the Chase
(fb) - BTS) <Eighty Earth years before the main story> -
Korbinite Grekan Yaer was recruited to serve of the Xandarian Nova
Corps because of his determination, high moral standards, and devotion
to equality and justice.
From that day, Yaer obediently served the Law Code
of Xandar, which was considered by some to be the single most
consistent law system in the galaxy.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Nine: The Rest is Silence
(fb) - BTS) - Grekan attended the Nova Academy alongside cadets Lolet
Clawdi and Kurrgid. Grekan and Lolet had always had a romantic
interest, although they never acted on it. Grekan, Lolet, and the other
cadets all teased their fellow cadet Kurrgid, who was very short.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Seven: Resume Narrative Mode
- BTS Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Eight: Cut to the Chase (fb) - BTS) - Traveling at
faster-than-light in the White Stripe, Rigellian Recorder 127, Rocket
(Raccoon) and Groot headed toward Knowhere after departing. After the ship
dropped out of hyperspace as they approached Knowhere, they were
confronted by three Nova Corps X-Class Pursuit Ships, piloted by Centurion Grekan Yaer and Corpsmen Starkross and Valis.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Eight: Cut to the Chase)
- Grekan
Yaer led the pursuit of the White Stripe, disregarding the advice of
the Xandarian Worldmind and having Starkross and Valis follow him. However,
when the craft they were pursuing entered an asteroid field, Grekan
ordered the corpsmen to hold back, and he flew his ship in pursuit.
Following the White Stripe via its debris trail, Grekan's ship took
several asteroid hits before finally catching his target in a tractor
beam; however, as Grekan increased his ship's gravity in an effort to
draw it to a halt, Rocket turned hard, sling shotting Yaer's ship into
an asteroid and totally destroying it.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Nine: The Rest is Silence (fb) - BTS) - Yaer ejected just before the explosion but was knocked unconscious.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Nine: The Rest is Silence)
- Recovering, Yaer accessed the Nova Force and then located and
captured the
White Stripe. Towing the ship under his own power, Yaer exited the
asteroid field and reunited with Starkross and Valis before hailing and
then boarding the Nova Corps
heavy cruiser. Starkross was a little tearful over Grekan's near-death
experience, and Grekan encouraged Valis to write a report about his
(Yaer's) unorthodox actions. Grekan subsequently greeted Lolet who gave
him a wink while teasing his crazy behavior, after which she had her
sixty Denarians, and a number of Millennians surround the ship. Grekan
and the others watched with surprise as the relatively tiny Rocket exited the ship and asked what seemed to be the problem.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Ten: Xandar (fb) - BTS) - Grekan and the Nova Corps returned to Xandar with Rocket, Groot, and Recorder 127.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Ten: Xandar)
- Grekan and Lolet confronted the detainees, and Grekan swiftly became
irate with Rocket's attitude and Groot's inability to answer questions
in any other than "I am Groot." Eventually, the Recorder began citing a
list of violations of the Nova Corps Code of Conduct including Verbal
Abuse of a Detainee (Code of Conduct, item 171777454), Physical Threat
to the Body or Person of a Detainee (Code of
Conduct, item 876888); these only served to enrage Grekan further until
the Recorder pointed out his threats had caused his partner to change
her opinion of him. He continued with failure to inform a suspect of
his rights and the charges prior to interview (Xandar Criminal Code,
paragraph 1112 (a), subsection iii and after); failure of formal
identification of a suspect prior to charging (Xandar Criminal Code, paragraph 82 (a), subsection iv); and others.
Grekan and Lolet reluctantly excused the trio.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Twelve: Our Al Capone Moment
(fb) - BTS) - Either based on a side discussion between Rocket and the
Recorder or one their own, Lolet and Grekan appreciated that the White
Stripe had no insurance. As he prepared to arrest the trio and re-open
the other charges against them, Roamer materialized and blasted Yaer
through the dock wall with his neutralizer.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter
Fourteen: In Which There are No Sudden Surprise Twists
Whatsoever <Dissembling Mode Activated>) - After Roamer took out
six defense cannons, Yaer returned in time to use a gravimetric shield
to save Rocket from being destroyed by Roamer (following the Nova
Corps' Code of Conduct, item 1246613, which made him morally
responsible for the welfare of any individuals in his custody or
detention). The Spaceknight flew at Yaer, whose punch smashed Roamer's
head sideways and then used a gravimetric pulse to rip the blaster out
of his hand and crumple it. The two then fought hand-to-hand fiercely,
during which Yaer gained a split lip.
Clawdi soon arrived alongside seven other Nova Corps
officers, and Roamer engaged them all. When Yaer flew at Roamer again,
he was knocked back into the White Stripe, which Yaer then picked up
and hurled at Roamer, and it was soon completely destroyed. Yaer then
led the other Nova Corps officers against Roamer, whose ruthless,
devastating and unorthodox (yet finally nuanced) combat tactics allowed
him to hold them all off. As Rocket and crew prepared to escape in a
Xeronian warp shuttle, Yaer blasted Roamer back into it, and then
Roamer, in turn, hurled it at Yaer and his allies, who blasted it to
pieces. More savage hand-to-hand combat ensued.
The
Recorder, Groot, and Rocket eventually boarded a K-class Nova Corps
prowl cruiser, and the Recorder used Nova protocol on treatment of
prisoners to convince the ship's control center to take them off planet
to protect them. Seeing this, Roamer punched Yaer away and took off in
pursuit, and Yaer and more than 200 other Nova Corps officers, as well
as chase ships and arrest flier went after him. The prowler accelerated
and swiftly achieved "80 million distance units" from Xandar, and
Roamer, Yaer, and the rest of the Nova Corps lost track of them.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Fourteen: In Which There are No Sudden Surprise Twists
Whatsoever <Dissembling Mode Activated>) - However, the prowler was subsequently captured by the
Kree Pride of Pama battlecruiser, under the command of Sharnor the
Accuser.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Thirty-Eight: Meanwhile (8,087 floors higher up))
- An
immense Nova Corps heavy cruiser arrived outside of Timely Inc., and
Grekan Yaer (along with Centurion Clawdi and Corpsmen Starkross and
Valis) arrived in the Timely boardroom via shattering the windows'
glass and ordered everyone to stand down, but met with resistance from
the Shi'ar Imperial Guardsmen. After Timely's Odus Hanxchamp convinced
both sides to stand down, Grekan explained that the Nova Corps were in
pursuit of fugitives and that a stolen Nova Corps prowler was confirmed
as having traveled there. Upon further questioning, Grekan clarified
that they were pursuing Recorder #127 and that they had a permit by
galactic treaty to search the premises.
Although acknowledging the Xandarians' legal
coverage, the Imperial Guardsmen Arach insisted they would take the
Recorder, and the Metal-Wings raised their weapons at the Nova
Corpsmen. Hanxchamp convinced the Xandarians and Shi'ar to stand down
and negotiate, and Grekan ultimately agreed to let the
Shi'ar take the Recorder -- despite not knowing why the Shi'ar wanted
him -- and that the Nova Corpsmen would take the fugitives Gamora,
Groot, and Rocket.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty: Danger in the Workplace)
- Teleporting into the
boardroom from the newly-arrived Pride of Pama, Sharnor the Accuser
forcibly insisted
that the Recorder was hers (and the Kree's); the hundred Kree warriors
and three Sentry units that accompanied her prevented Yaer and the
Xandarians or the Shi'ar forces from fighting back. Nonetheless, Yaer
replied that the Nova Corps did not take well to bullying and warned
her that this was an act of war, breaking non-aggression
treaties...however, she interrupted, explaining that they were acting
to defend themselves and everyone else from the vast power that Timely
was attempting to claim.
The Badoon then arrived with 10 megadestroyers, and Commander Droook demanded the delivery of
the Recorder or they would obliterate the entire landmass on which the
building stood. Yaer warned him that he had escalated things to an insane degree.
And then forty immense
Templeships of the Universal Church of Truth (UCT) arrived and
teleported in hosts of Crusaders, led by Cardinals, to assault the
facility and everyone in it.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty-Two: This is What the -Tik!- Flark is Going on Up
There
- BTS) - As the Templeships opened fire on the other ships, the Nova
heavy gauzed itself in an immaculate shield-robe of gravimetrics, and
its commander started to demand an immediate cease-fire.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty-Two: This is What the -Tik!- Flark is Going on Up
There) - With
the Church's Cardinals, Crusaders and Black Knights storming the
building, Yaer summoned a number of Nova Corps officers, who flew like
rockets from the Nova Heavy and swept down the stricken building to
engage all hostiles. The Corpsmen sent shock waves down corridors and
hallways as they swept in, targeting anything and everyone with a
weapon.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty-Two: This is What the -Tik!- Flark is Going on Up
There - BTS) - Badoon War Brotherhood warrior fire-teams were teleported in.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty-Two: This is What the -Tik!- Flark is Going on Up
There)
- Yaer, Clawdi, Starkross, and Valis were locked in a brutal fight with
a host of Black Knights and a Sentry unit that had decided that
anything not Kree was fair game. The battle took them through several
walls into the main hallway outside the executive boardroom.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty-Two: This is What the -Tik!- Flark is Going on Up
There)
- When Sharnor the Accuser sent her agent Una-Ren to locate the
Recorder, Clawdi announced this to her allies and, feeling that she was
on to something, advised Yaer to go after her and assured him -- when
he started to argue -- that she and the others could hold off their
attackers.
Smashing a pair of Black Knights into a wall via
gravimetric power dispensed through his gauntlets, Yaer took off after
Una, smashing several combatants out of the way in the process.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty-Two: This is What the -Tik!- Flark is Going on Up
There - BTS) - Seeing Yaer's departure, Arach sent Ebon after him.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty-Two: This is What the -Tik!- Flark is Going on Up
There)
- Yaer reached the elevator banks just after the door had closed on the
car carrying Una-Ren and Odus Hanxchamp, and they had headed down to
the Datacore. Tearing open the outer doors and preparing to dive into
the shaft in pursuit, Yaer bounced off a disk of dark matter created by
Ebon and landed back onto the carpet outside. When she noted that he
seemed to be in a hurry and raised her arm to unleash another blast,
Yaer cursed the Shi'ar as he got up, and he told Ebon that Hanxchamp
and Una-Ren were in the car, the destination of which he guided her to
figure out.
When they were attacked by Badoon War Brotherhood
Devastation cadre warriors, they turned together and blasted the Badoon
off their feet. Ebon proposed cooperation, Yaer agreed "in the spirit
of protecting the entire flarking galaxy for our mutual good," and the
two shook hands and introduced themselves. Ebon told him, "Let's go guard the galaxy," and he replied, "We'd better...because no one else is doing the flarking job," after which he and Ebon jumped side-by-side into
the elevator shaft.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty-Three: One with Anything) - The Recorder was lowered into the Datacore, which then began to
steadily raise toward 100%.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty-Four: Watched)
- Arriving in the datacore chamber, Yaer and Ebon unsuccessfully tried
to contain the chaos, which included Cardinal Navorth and Roamer
fighting savagely as well as other battles including Sharnor, Gamora,
the Black Knights, and the Badoon War Brotherhood.
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty-Five: Great Power, Great Responsibility) - The Recorder deposed the power to Groot and then advised him to fix this
mess, after which Groot transported away all of those who had invaded
the Timely, Inc. building, after which he restored the damaged
building, restored all those slain in the recent conflict, and then not
only dispersed the Datacore but made it so that no one could ever
re-create it again (if anyone ever thought of trying to recreate the
datamap in pursuit of power, they would instantly forget how to do it).
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty-Six: Tails to Astonish
(ff))) <At least in the future of Reality-17721> - Yaer returned
to Xandar and later married Lolet Clawdi. Between them, they produced
six little prospective Corpsmen.
Yaer served four more terms before he was promoted
to Nova Prime, a post he held illustriously for nine Earth years. One
of the reasons the Worldmind chose Yaer for this prime position was the
positive work he had done in forging closer ties with the Shi'ar.
Comments: Created by Dan Abnett.
In the Acknowledgments section, Dan thanked Stuart Moore, Jeff
Youngquist, Axel Alonso, Dan Buckley, Sarah Brunstad, and James Gunn
for their support in this project.
He also noted "fist-bumps to <the Appendix's own> Ronald Byrd for continuity-fu."
Grekan Yaer was
a likable character in this story. The profile focuses on the main
points, but it misses out on a lot of characterization.
I'm pretty certain Project 616 was intended to enable control of the
entire 616-universe, which is insane, as even the Recorders haven't
been everywhere in the universe, but some references refer to it
controlling the/a galaxy...which is still insanely large, but is a
little more feasible. "Steal this Galaxy"
In-continuity?
People question whether novels should be in-continuity. There is a
mindset that they should arbitrarily and automatically excluded. I
don't get that at all. If the stories fit seamlessly in-continuity and
they add to the
rich texture of the "Marvel Universe," why exclude them? In any case,
characters in such
stories as novels, games, etc. that don't contradict -616 continuity
are considered "fringe characters." They fit into existing continuity,
but are not definitively part of it until they are confirmed to be so
in a story, handbook, etc.
There is one significant continuity glitch, but it
has been referenced in other stories confirmed to take place in
Reality-616 (see Donald's discussion below)
They
sure fit in better than a lot of stuff by certain writers...you know
who you are...and we know who you are...
Not only that, but the story specifically references the universe in
which they dwelled to be Reality-616...however, the Marvel Cinematic
Universe movies refer to their mainstream reality as -616 also...
Counterpoint by Donald Campbell:
As much as I liked this novel, there were some
elements that bothered me. For example, Alpha Centauri is described as a
"cosmic hubworld (that governs) almost thirty systems and trillions of
lives." This definitely does NOT sound the like 616 Alpha Centauri system
where the Centaurians are usually depicted as only having a
"bow-and-arrow" level technology, the Alpha Centaurians (assuming
they are not nearly extinct) are focused on desperately trying to keep their
homeworld habitable, and the Centurii from Centuri-Six (which may or may not
actually be part of the Alpha Centauri system) were all kidnapped by slavers.
And yes, I hold this opinion despite the fact that, in
Annihilators#1/2, Abnett and Lanning established that Rocket Raccoon had
worked for six months as a mail clerk at the Alpha Centauri offices of the
Customer Services Division of Timely Inc. Also, while the Timely offices
were aboard an orbiting ship in that comic, in this novel they are on the
planet Alpha Centauri...which is also wrong/inconsistent with the Marvel Comics
universe.
In conclusion, I really enjoyed the novel but I
don't think it was meant to be canon and I don't think that it should be
treated as being "in continuity." And I would REALLY like some writer
to finally get around to explaining the current status quo in the 616 Alpha
Centauri star system. I mean, what level of technology do the Centaurians
actually possess? What do the Centaurians actually call their race? What is
their name for the planet known to Terrans as Centauri-IV? Can Alpha
Centaurians still live on Arima or was the planet left too dehydrated after
Sub-Mariner I#18? Is Centuri-Six actually in orbit around Proxima
Centauri?
Personally, due to the Alpha Centauri discontinuity, I would
prefer it if Recorder #127 were as incorrect in his statement that he existed
in "Universe 616" as some characters from Doctor Strange in the
Multiverse of Madness were when they assigned the number "616" to
the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Reality-199999). However, that's just my
opinion.
Me again:
Valid point on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the difference is
that the novel is not clearly a different reality or part of a
different Multiverse than the comics Reality-616 as the cosmic
hierarchy, (Uatu the Watcher, Galactus, etc.) etc., is the same. Additionally, this story goes to
great lengths to fit solidly with Reality-616's continuity, alien
races, etc.
The Alpha Centauri discrepancy is
certainly significant, but bigger issues than that happened consistently in
Bendis' and other writers' stories that are considered Reality-616.
- Further, Alpha Centauri is an Earth designation...is it that
much of a stretch that there is another world/system in the virtually
infinite universe that has a star designated the translation/equivalent
of Alpha Centauri?
- OR maybe it was due to the reality-altering Secret Wars?
- OR maybe there is something weird and unusual that we've never even heard of?
As you note, -616 stories have contradictions within the Alpha Centauri
system, but they're not excluded...as well as there having been
relatively recent -616 continuity comics that reference Rocket's past
with the Alpha Centauri offices of Timely Inc.
Timely Incorporated may have offices on an orbiting ship, but the
office on Alpha Centauri is presumably the main office. Maybe they
moved portions or entire buildings. They have the technology...they can
rebuild it...
Anyway...the bottom line is that this story and all the characters in it are fringe characters until confirmed one way or another.
At minimum, the story occurred in Reality-17721.
Did the same or similar events occur in Reality-616?
Who knows? Not even "The Shadow"...
--Snood
Earth-17721
Following the
dispersal of Project 616, those involved did various things; some of
which may parallel Reality-616's history, but those extending years
into the future are, at least, paralleled in this reality. Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot. Guardians of the Galaxy:
Rocket and Groot: Steal this Galaxy prose novel Chapter Forty-Six Tails to Astonish (2017).
In story:
(Guardians
of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon & Groot -- Steal the Galaxy Chapter Forty-Six: Tails to Astonish) - The Recorder flashed forward, having recorded and now detailing
what happened to most of the participants of the Project 616 adventure
in the many years since its conclusion; all of these events occurred in the alternate Reality-17721; many of them may have also occurred in Reality-616, but that would have to be decided on a case by case basis.
Significantly for Yaer, with the story having been published in 2017,
at the time of this profile, that's 7 years ago, which can be
ballparked as 1.5 years Marvel Time, so returning to Xandar and
marrying Lolet Clawdi seems likely, and maybe even with one kid already
birthed and another on the way...however, the other kids would not
likely have been born yet unless they had multiple-child births and/or
a much shorter gestational period than humans. With Korbinite-Tsyrani
hybrids, who knows?
Also, who knows what the length of a term as a
Nova Centurion is, but he would presumably still be Nova Centurion
until at least 2037...and then Nova Prime until about 2082...so that's
all in the potential future.
Profile by Snood.
