GUILDERN
Type: Essentially Earth-like alien dimension
Environment: Magical realm (Guildern looks to be much like medieval Earth, with castles and forests, though there is also some advanced technology, like energy blasters and sonic collars). Additionally, Mendes used a scrying crystal, possibly of a mystic nature. Most of the people wield more basic weapons, like swords, maces, & crossbows.
Usual means of access: Magic
Dominant Life Form: A race of winged goat-people who speak telepathically; "Gyps" (a dwarf-like people (possibly servants of the caprine people?), unable to speak telepathically); bees
Significant Inhabitants: Donal Ban, Feren + brothers, guards, Imacolata, Isis, Mendes, Tristum, former king
Significant Locations: Castle of the king
Visitors: Dark Angel; Nikki Doyle (aka Wild Thing) and the gamers (Charles, Maklin, Stella, Tony, Yolanda, and an unidentified barbarian) of Earth-8410's 2020 AD; unidentified creature from an unidentified time/location/dimension
First Appearance: Wild Angels#1 (April, 1994)
History:
(Wild Angels part 3: In Other Worlds (fb) - BTS) - Guildern's king (Tristum & Donal Ban's father) outlawed the bee torture, which involved placement of a collar that emitted a frequency that drove the bees to frenzy.
(Wild Angels part 3: In Other Worlds (fb) - BTS) - Isis and Mendes engineered murdering the previous king to conquer the throne.
(Wild Angels part 1: Lost in Cyberspace (fb) - BTS) - Using information stolen from Mys-Tech's computers, an unidentified research center learned of the occult powers of sound.
(Wild Angels part 1: Lost in Cyberspace (fb) - BTS) - Via the screams of victims they tortured, the research center's scientists opened portals across space-time and through various dimensions, including Guildern.
(Wild Angels part 2: A Lost Kingdom (fb) - BTS) - Guildern's king was murdered by Mendes or his agents.
(Wild Angels part 2: A Lost Kingdom (fb)) - Having allegedly found the king's body, Mendes swore vengeance; discovering a drunken pair (Feren's brothers) behind the nearby tapestry, passed out at a table with bloody daggers by their sides, Mendes slew them both.
(Wild Angels part 2: A Lost Kingdom (fb) - BTS) - Mendes accused Donal Ban and Tristum of having plotted with Feren's brothers to kill the king and demanded their deaths.
(Wild Angels part 2: A Lost Kingdom (fb) - Feren rushed to Donal Ban & Tristum, revealing their father's death & Mendes accusations, then convinced them to flee rather than be murdered; she promised to find the true killer. As Tristum and Donal Ban discussed their plans, Donal Ban suddenly vanished.
(Wild Angels part 2: A Lost Kingdom (fb) - BTS) - Donal Ban was brought to modern day Earth (circa 1996 comics) via space-time portal (marked by strange clouds) created by the research corporation's experiments in sound.
(Wild Angels part 1: Lost in Cyberspace (fb) - BTS) - A group of outlaw VR gamers (Charles, Maklin, Stella, Tony, Yolanda, and an unidentified barbarian) from Earth-8410's 2020 AD accessed a virtual reality, to which Tristum was apparently pulled by a portal initiated by the research center.
(Wild Angels part 1: Lost in Cyberspace) - Donal Ban was at the epicenter of uncontrolled power unleashed by the unwitting research scientists. Investigating, Dark Angel stunned Donal Ban with a blast. Donal Ban telepathically asked her to help him, and she agreed to do so. As they departed, she destroyed the facility (on a delay after ordering its evacuation), initiating the portals' closures.
(Wild Angels part 1: Lost in Cyberspace) - Supported by allies Trout & Liddel, Nikki Doyle (aka Wild Thing) accessed an illegal VR game owned by Maklin in Manhattan's Upper East Side; upon entering the game, Nikki defeated a werewolf, then unsuccessfully tried to convince the gamers to leave the virtual reality because they could die in real life if they died there, but they instead magically bound her and left her behind; however, when the "Infamous Progeny" attacked the group, Nikki synched with the program, freed herself, and dispatched the progeny. Meanwhile, entering a nearby castle, the gamers were assaulted by Tristum; Nikki soon arrived and defeated Tristum, but the whole group vanished from the virtual reality per Earth-8410/Liddel's monitors.
(Wild Angels part 2: A Lost Kingdom) - After Donal Ban
told Dark Angel his history, she agreed to try to use her power to help him, but
they both appreciated that other portals had been created.
(Wild Angels part 2: A Lost Kingdom) - In the virtual reality, Tristum
revived and confronted Nikki and the gamers. Maklin attacked anew, and Tristum
defeated Maklin, but noted he did not want to kill him as he rather needed such
valiant warriors; hearing Tristum's story, Maklin and his allies agreed to aid hime; after the castle faded, they head "south" at
Maklin's recommendation.
Scaling a mountainside hours later (with Tristum unable to fly due to damage to
his wing in their earlier struggle), they encountered the portal clouds and were
pulled to Guildern; almost instantly thereafter, they were attacked by Mendes'
men and captured, except the sorcerer gamer Charles, who was apparently killed
by a sword to the head. Mendes announced his plans to interrogate them all, and
Stella noted that this usually means they would be tortured before
being killed.
(Wild Angels part 3: In Other Worlds) - In the Hall of
Guildern's throne, Mendes noted he had not killed the alien prisoners because
they could know where Donal Ban hid. Isis encouraged Mendes to kill Tristum to
end his threat; Mendes threatened Isis when she challenged him, but she told him
without her he was nothing. Mendes cast Isis aside to go with Lady Imacolata.
Meanwhile, miles away, Donal Ban & Dark Angel arrived through
one of the portals from modern day Earth; with Donal Ban fatigued and because it
would be easier to pass unnoticed, they traveled by foot; Donal Ban noted that
Tristum was the rightful heir to the throne and further asked Dark Angel to
spare the people of his castle if/when they misguidedly attacked.
Mendes subdued Nikki, Tristum & the others with an
unidentified device, then questioned the shackled group; Tristum asserted his
innocence despite threats from Mendes, who then decapitated one of the gamers.
When Yolanda mysteriously vanished as her body perished during a failed rescue
attempt back on Earth, Nikki refused to speak, and Mendes prepared the bee torture.
Donal Ban and Dark Angel located & freed Feren, who directed
them where to find Tristum; Dark Angel sent her astral self to merge with the
bees, calming them and convincing them to depart. Dark Angel and Donal Ban freed
and joined up with Nikki & Tristum. They defeated the guards, and Dark Angel
revealed the space-time portals. Observing and hearing this via his scrying
crystal, Mendes plotted to conquer multiple worlds.
(Wild Angels part 4: Into the Jaws of the Enemy) - Donal Ban,
Tristum, Nikki Doyle, Dark Angel, and the two remaining gamers, Maklin &
Stella, dined in Guildern's royal castle's kitchen; when guards arrived, Feren
fled. Donal
Ban urged the others to subdue them harmlessly, and Dark Angel subdued the
guards by using a solar wind to hurl cups at them. Dark Angel noted that the
space-time portals were closing and they had to return home or be trapped
forever; having distantly observed this via scrying crystal, Mendes plotted to
re-open the portals. When Isis warned him Mendes could unleash forces he was not
prepared for, Mendes skewered her through the chest and had Lady Imacolata
brought to his side.
In Mendes' torture chamber, his experiments with prisoners'
screams have had immediate results, and Imacolata was consumed by a
many-headed(?) lizard
creature.
Tristum convinced Nikki to watch over Maklin & Stella, and
Dark Angel, Tristum, & Donal Ban confronted the creature. Donal Ban was
bitten in the wing and cast to the ground. Telepathically
investigating the creature's mind, Shevaun finds it an innocent victim summoned
by Mendes. With Nikki's wrist-blasters not functioning, Maklin fought Mendes,
disarming him in a swordfight, but Mendes treacherously blasted Maklin in the
chest.
Briefly appearing in Guildern, Liddel briefly encountered
Nikki before returning to his own time; Liddel resolved that the group
must link to a VR game to return.
Tristum revealed the truth to the people, who accepted him
as their king. As Mendes took Stella hostage with a knife to her throat hoping
to make an escape, Nikki stabbed Mendes in the back, apparently killing him.
Having learned they must return through the VR, Nikki
transported herself, Stella, Dark Angel, and the creature back to their native
times/realms.

And a great big, huge thanks to Angelo Mammone, who was kind enough to translate this book for me, which was produced by Marvel Italia and thus written in Italian. Otherwise, I'd just be looking at pictures and Italian words and thinking...WTF?
Nonetheless, some parts are a little bit
unclear...Guildern was the name of the kingdom...was it the name of the realm?
How much more to the realm was there? Is it one of those pocket realms where a
relatively small landmass is surrounded by limited space, or is it much, much
more...and how many licks to the center of a tootsie roll tootsie pop? The world
may never know.
Here's the translation:
To my ignorant human eye, Tristum's people look virtually identical, with the exceptions of Donal Ban, Imacolata, Isis, Mendes, & Tristum. As seen on the picture to the right, Donal Ban (far right) notably has a mohawk/horse-like mane and leg-armor that goes up to mid-thigh, whereas Tristum (left) has some "French braid"-like hair and leg-armor that stops below the knee. Tristum also wears wrist bands and an ornate belt.
Hard to tell if Gyps was to be considered a name for Feren's people, or just a description of her personal station in life.

I am not positive Feren was actually a
wetnurse (meaning she breast fed them even though she wasn't their mother) as
defined in English. I'm working from a translation by an Italian friend. Feren
is referred to as "la nostra balia," which Bing translator translates as "our
authority"; and "la mia nutrice," which it translates as "my nurse." My
translation also has Nikki Doyle saying "Perché dovrei fare io da balia?" -
which my friend translates as "why should I play the wetnurse?" which makes a
LOT more sense than Bing translator, which spits out "why should I let me
stitches?".
Anyway, she was definitely their nanny/caretaker, at least.
Did she breastfeed them? The world may never know.

It is not 100% clear exactly how the brothers were set up, but they pretty clearly were set-up.
Though they served whoever held the crown, Donal Ban recognized that they were essentially innocent pawns and implored his allies to defeat the guards without killing them. Under Mendes, they fought Tristum, Donal Ban, Dark Angel, Nikki Doyle, the gamers, and the many-headed lizard creature Mendes unwittingly summoned. Upon Tristum revealing the truth about Mendes, the guards, among others, vowed to serve Tristum, and Mendes perished at Nikki Doyle's hands soon after.

(Wild Angels part 3: In Other Worlds) - Arguing with
Isis over what to do with the captured Tristum,
Nikki Doyle
and gamers (with Donal Ban still missing), Mendes cast
Isis to the ground and summoned Lady Imacolata to accompany him as he met with
the prisoners. Imacolata taunted Isis, telling her she should do something for
her balance. Isis angrily vowed that he would not replace her with "that
courtesan."
Imacolata witnessed Mendes subduing the prisoners, and then
stood by as Mendes slew one of the prisoners and then ordered the bee torture of
Nikki Doyle.
(Wild Angels part 4: Into the Jaws of the Enemy) - As Mendes prepared to force open the closing space-time portals that brought others to his realm, Isis warned him Mendes could unleash forces he was not prepared for. I'm not sure whether Isis was Mendes' queen, lover, or just a power-hungry co-conspirator. She told Imacolata she should be referred to as "your highness," presumably indicating Isis was queen at the time? In a heated argument, Mendes said he slew the king to satisfy her ambitions, and she told Mendes that without her he was nothing. Presumably she had some noble background...

gamers
(Natives of
Earth-8410 circa 2020 AD -- not natives of Guildern)
Charles (bald guy/sorcerer) - he could form mystic bonds <via stating "Slim Shala Bine!"> & mouth-gags, counter other spells <he said "Abrim al Mage" to counter what he thought was an invisibility spell>. May have been French, as he said "Fermez la bouche (shut your mouth) to Nikki -- or he may just have known the phrase and used it because he felt like it.
Maklin (leader, central with a cape)
Stella (long-haired bikini and cape-wearing woman - she seemed a barbarian/warrior-type)
Tony (werewolf, on the ground and in the two shots to the left)
Yolanda (dark-haired, in the evening dress; she kept a dagger strapped to her thigh, but we didn't see her do too much)
unidentified, long-haired male barbarian).
(Wild Angels part 1: Lost in Cyberspace (fb) - BTS) - A group of outlaw Virtual Reality (VR) gamers (Charles, Maklin, Stella, Tony, Yolanda, and an unidentified man) from Earth-8410's 2020 AD accessed a virtual reality magic realm, to which Tristum of Guildern was apparently pulled by a portal initiated by the research center.
(Wild Angels part 1: Lost in Cyberspace (fb) - BTS) - Charles, Maklin, Stella, Yolanda, and the unidentified man became a group of sorcerers and warriors, while Tony was transformed into a werewolf.
(Wild Angels part 2: A Lost Kingdom) - The gamers explored the petrified forest.
(Wild Angels part 1: Lost in Cyberspace) - Supported by allies
Trout & Liddel,
Nikki Doyle (aka Wild Thing) accessed
the illegal VR game owned by
Maklin in Manhattan's Upper East Side. Upon entering the game (in the petrified
forest?), Nikki was ambushed by but (aided by Liddel's warning) defeated Tony
the werewolf, her blasting sending his mind back to his body on Earth-8410,
where he was arrested by Trout. Nikki then unsuccessfully tried to convince the
gamers to leave the virtual reality because they could die in real life if they
died there, but Yolanda argued Nikki was trying to kidnap or otherwise
manipulate them. At Maklin's order, Charles mystically bound Nikki's wrists
behind her. When she insulted him, Charles created a mystical mouth-gag as well.
Almost immediately thereafter, however, the barbarian sensed the approach of
demons, and the "Infamous Progeny"
attacked the group, Nikki synched with the program, freed herself, and
dispatched the progeny.
Meanwhile, having entering a nearby castle, the gamers were
assaulted by Tristum. Nikki soon arrived, but her presence distracted the
barbarian, who Tristum smashed unconscious with a mace. Nikki subdued Tristum
with her wrist-blaster, and Maklin attempted to kill the creature (assuming it
might be another shapechanger, like Tony), but Nikki stopped him. The castle
then began to shake and crumble, but the whole
group vanished from the virtual reality per Earth-8410/Liddel's monitors (the
timing of this MAY have overlapped with the group being transported to Guildern
while scaling a cliff in the next chapter/issue, or it may just have been
because the portals were closing and the group was getting harder to reach via
conventional means...or something else!).
"Meanwhile," on Earth-8410 circa 2020 AD, Maklin's gamer base
suffered a power overload.
(Wild Angels part 2: A Lost Kingdom) - In the virtual reality, Nikki
appreciated the danger they were in (she may have been unable to depart this VR
under her own power) and urged the gamers to speak the password that would
return them to reality. Maklin suspected she had been sent by the Lord of the
Game to test them, but Nikki convinced them she was trying to save them. The
gamers spoke the password, "Excelsior," to no effect, and Nikki realized the
situation was even worse than she had thought. Tristum then
revived and confronted Nikki and the gamers. The barbarian attacked Tristum anew, and
Tristum
defeated the barbarian, but noted he did not want to kill him as he rather needed such
valiant warriors; hearing Tristum's story, Maklin and his allies agreed to aid
him. Nikki reminded them they could die for real in this VR and urged them to
get out of there, but Maklin reminded her that they couldn't go back under their
power, so screaming wouldn't help anything. The castle soon began to fade from
existence, and Charles futilely tried to counter what he thought was an
invisibility spell before realizing that the walls were actually ceasing
to exist. Tristum did not recognize where they were, and they headed "south" at
Maklin's recommendation, since they had "already explored the petrified forest".
Scaling a mountainside hours later (with Tristum unable to fly due to damage to
his wing in their earlier struggle), they (the gamers, Nikki, & Tristum) encountered the portal clouds and were
pulled to Guildern; almost instantly thereafter, they were attacked by Mendes'
men and captured, except the sorcerer gamer Charles, who was apparently killed
by a sword to the head. Mendes announced his plans to interrogate them all
despite Tristum's insistence that they were strangers, and Stella noted that this usually means they would be tortured before
being killed.
(Wild Angels part 3:
In Other Worlds) - From his castle, Mendes subdued Nikki, Tristum & the
gamers (unclear whether they broke free or were allowed to participate in
combat for entertainment purposes, or what) in the gardens with an
unidentified device, then questioned the shackled group. Tristum asserted his
innocence despite threats from Mendes, who then decapitated the barbarian gamer
to prove his threat.
"Meanwhile," in Earth-8410's 2020 AD, with fires raging below
Maklin's gamer base and storms raging above, Trout allowed the rescue squad's
Savalas to bring the inert Yolanda's body down a cable car; however, a lightning
bolt shattered the car's connection to the cable, and they fell to their
apparent deaths. Yolanda mysteriously vanished from Guildern soon after , but
Nikki refused to reveal anything to Mendes, and Mendes prepared the bee torture.
With Donal Ban and
Dark Angel
having arrived from Earth-616, Dark Angel telepathically convinced the bees to
depart, and then freed and joined up with Nikki, Tristum and their allies. They defeated the guards, and Dark Angel
revealed the space-time portals' existence. Observing and hearing this via his scrying
crystal, Mendes plotted to conquer multiple worlds.
(Wild Angels part 4:
Into the Jaws of the Enemy) - Donal Ban,
Tristum, Nikki Doyle, Dark Angel, and the two remaining gamers, Maklin &
Stella, dined in Guildern's royal castle's kitchen. Dark Angel nonlethally subdued the
approaching guards. Dark Angel noted that the
space-time portals were closing and they had to return home or be trapped
forever; having distantly observed this via scrying crystal, Mendes plotted to
re-open the portals.
In Mendes' torture chamber, his experiments with prisoners'
screams have had immediate results, and Imacolata was consumed by a
many-headed(?) lizard creature.
Tristum convinced Nikki to watch over Maklin & Stella, and
Dark Angel, Tristum, & Donal Ban confronted the creature. Telepathically
investigating the creature's mind, Dark Angel found it an innocent victim
summoned by Mendes. With Nikki's wrist-blasters not functioning, Maklin fought
Mendes, disarming him in a swordfight, but Mendes treacherously blasted Maklin
in the chest, apparently killing Makliln.
As Mendes took Stella hostage with a knife to her throat
hoping to make an escape, Nikki stabbed Mendes in the back, apparently killing
him.
Having learned (via Liddle) they must return through the VR, Nikki
transported herself, Stella, Dark Angel, and the creature back to their native
times/realms.

"Infamous
Progeny"
(They appeared in
the Virtual Reality realm where Tristum encountered the gamers...I wouldn't
think they were natives of Guildern, but they were the skeletons of goated-headed
guys with wings, so maybe there was some direct connection, or they fed off of
Tristum's memories/emotions/or something...)
In the Virtual Reality, after the gamers decided not to trust Nikki Doyle and had Charles mystically bind her, the barbarian gamer detected the approach of "demons," and a group of sword-wielding, goat-headed skeletons with feathery wings soon attacked. Synching with the VR, Nikki soon dispatched the attackers.

creature
(Summoned to Mendes
by a mystic space-time portal, it is not known if the creature was brought
from a distant place on
Guildern,
a distant location in
Guildern's
dimension; or whether it was from some other dimension, such as any Earth's
universe, another previously identified realm, or a realm never before
seen/identified; and/or whether it was from the past, present, or future of
one of the above realms)
(Wild Angels part 4: Into the Jaws of the Enemy (fb) - BTS) - Having distantly observed via scrying crystal as Dark Angel noted how the space-time portals were closing, Mendes plotted to re-open the portals.
(Wild Angels part 4: Into the Jaws of the Enemy (fb) - BTS) - Attempting to duplicate Mys-Tech's experiments (as performed by the unidentified research facility from Earth-616's modern era) accessing the occult power of sound via torture victim's screams, Mendes unwittingly brought a monstrous creature to his torture hall. The creature promptly snatched up and devoured Mendes' ladyfriend Imacolata.
(Wild Angels part 4: Into the Jaws of the Enemy) - Dark
Angel, Tristum, & Donal Ban confronted the creature. Donal Ban was bitten
in the wing and cast to the ground. Telepathically
investigating the creature's mind, learned it to not be there enemy, but just a
creature summoned there by Mendes. Dark Angel telepathically shared this
information with everyone in the castle, stopping the fighting between
Guildern's guards and the creature.
After
Nikki Doyle
stabbed Mendes in the back, apparently killing him, and Tristum ascended to the
throne of Guildern, Nikki, via traveling through the Virtual Reality, transported herself,
Stella, Dark Angel, and the creature back to their native
times/realms.
