extraterrestrialrace-champsla-surf98"Zrhaer" race

Classification: Humanoid extraterrestrial race

Location/Base of Operations: Unrevealed (see comments);
at least formerly the planet "Zrhaermall" (see comments)

Known Members: None identified

Affiliations: Formerly Champion (Tryco Slatterus)

Enemies: Champion;
indirectly Thanos for sending Champion there.

First Appearance: (Referenced) Thanos Quest#1 (1990);
(pictured) Silver Surfer III#97 (October, 1994)...or Silver Surfer III#98 (November, 1994; see comments)

Powers/Abilities: No abilities of the "Zrhaer" discussed.

They possessed the powerful "Wristlets of Sutnaqoccu," but it seems unlikely they created them, and it is unrevealed whether they ever used Wristlets themselves. Even if they did, they likely would not have gained vast power, as the wristlets augmented the innate power of the user.

See the race sub-profile for possible further discussion of their abilities.

Traits: The Zrhaer were a peaceful, religious people, whose gods dwelled in the Heavens above their world.

They considered the "Wristlets of Sutnaqoccu" to be their most potent icons.

Believing a powerful being from space to be a god from the Heavens, they would gift that being with their sacred wristlets.

Type: Bilaterally symmetric semi-humanoid bipeds
Eyes
: Two (on head; they were never shown in normal color to determine eye color, but they appeared to have large, solid dark eyes, without obvious pupils or iridae)
Fingers
: Two (plus opposing thumb)
Toes
: Unrevealed
Skin color:
They were never shown in normal color to determine skin color
Average height: Approximately 5'10"?
Other distinguishing features: They appeared to be hairless, and they had flattened noses.

See the race sub-profile for possible further discussion of their appearances..

History:
(
Silver Surfer III#98 (fb)) - At some point, the "Zrhaer" acquired the powerful "Wristlets of Sutnaqoccu" (see comments) which they considered to be religious icons.

(Thanos Quest#1 (fb) - BTS) - At some point, the Champion encountered the people of "Zrhaer" whom he considered to be weaklings. extraterrestrialrace-champsla-surf98-giftlets

(Thanos Quest#1 - BTS) - Thanos of Titan duped Champion into surrendering the Infinity Power Gem (the power of which Champion failed to appreciate) in exchange for being towed from open space to a nearby planet. After Thanos towed Champion to "Zrhaermall," Champion noted the planet to be ruled by weaklings, after which Thanos released him from his tractor beam in low orbit, causing him to begin the plunge to the planet.

(Silver Surfer III#98 (fb)) - Surviving the impact with the planet due to his own power and the Elders' Death-granted immortality, the Champion found that the simple Zrhaer thought him a god fallen from Heaven. They worshipped him and gifted him with their most potent icons, the "Wristlets of Sutnaqoccu" --

(All-New Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z#4: Fallen One entry) - and which were apparently adaptations of the Quantum Bands.extraterrestrialrace-champsla-surf98-slaughtered

(Silver Surfer III#98 (fb)) - Champion was surprised to find that the wristlets truly were of mystical origin, and they greatly augmented his power.

Champion ruled the Zrhaer for a time, but he grew tired of dictatorship, so he met the entire population in battle; he was frustrated that the race had no warriors among them, and they were scarcely worth his effort.

(Silver Surfer III#97) - Standing atop a pile of defeated foes, the Champion -- his hands coated in gore -- asked, "Anybody else?" (see comments).

(Silver Surfer III#98 (fb) - BTS) - Champion then took to the stars, seeking Thanos...

(All-New Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z#4: Fallen One entry) - and the Power Gem.

(Silver Surfer III#98 - BTS) - After Champion had detailed his recent activities, the Surfer raged against the callous destruction of a civilization.

Comments: Created by Ron Marz, Jim Hall, and Tom Christopher.

It always frustrates me when a race or person appears and gains some history, significance, but is never named.
To provide some sort of useful designation to clarify them in this profiles and others, I am calling them the "Zrhaer" and their planet "Zrhaermall."
Similarly, for the purpose of useful discussion, I'm going to call the wristlets, the "Wristlets of Sutnaqoccu."
To avoid needless clutter, I'm using quotations around the terms in the first use in each heading, but not subsequent references.

While it is implied, it is not actually confirmed that Champion slew all of the Zrhaer.

See the race sub-profile for possible further discussion on those seen in #97 and #98.

Profile by Snood.

CLARIFICATIONS:
This "Zrhaer" should be distinguished from:

"Zrhaermall"
extraterrestrialrace-champsla-tq1-planetfallHome planet of the "Zrhaermall."

It appeared to be essentially Earth-like, although we really have nothing to go on, as Champion's superhuman nature would allow him to survive even in the vacuum of space, so a hostile environment would not necessarily be harsh for him.

It appeared to have either a pair of moons, one closer than the other, or perhaps there were one or more planets that appeared in relative proximity.

Skin color:

Average height: Approximately 5'10"?
Other distinguishing features: The "Zrhaer" had pointed ears, and they appeared to have a prominent pair of incisors that filled the anterior (front) aspect of their mandibles (lower jaws).

They had some sort of marking around their eyes, which may have been natural patterns, tattoos, or makeup.

Their hair came to a "widow's peak" on their foreheads. Most of them appeared to wear their hair long, in a pony tail.

    They apparently had green blood.

Powers/abilities: Although some of them possessed full suits of body armor, they were no match for Champion augmented by the "Wristlets of Sutnaqoccu," which vastly magnified his already Class 100 strength and granted him energy powers sufficient to shatter a planet.

(Silver Surfer III#97) - Standing atop a pile of defeated foes, the Champion -- his hands coated in gore -- asked, "Anybody else?"

Note: So, I didn't really take a close look at the images before starting this profile.

On the last page of Silver Surfer III#97, Champion slaughters some population of beings.

In #98, Champion discusses slaughtering the people who gave him the wristlets and then taking off after Thanos, which is where Champion is at the start of the issue.

However, the images shown in Silver Surfer III#98 look much different from those in #97...enough that it makes me question whether they were even the same race or not. It was even the same art team in both issues.

There's another planet Champion destroyed that is shown in Silver Surfer III#98, but Champion notes that to have been an unpopulated world to which Thanos had teleported him.

Perhaps the races were of two different worlds, and -- en route to Thanos -- Champion stopped off and slaughtered another race, because, "Why not?"

Perhaps there were two races or species on the same planet, with the bald group from #98 representing a religious sect and the haired and pointed-eared group from #97 representing a warrior sect.

Perhaps it was just "art error"...but where's the fun in that...

Regardless, the faces of the group in #97 (this sub-profile) remind me of something Gil Kane might have drawn.
