History:
(Uncanny X-Men I#395 - BTS) - Ostracized by mankind for being a mutant, Double Helix joined the Tunnel Dwellers, a group of outcast British mutants living in the tunnels underneath London.

(Uncanny X-Men I#395) - Double Helix and the other mutants were present when three of the X-Men (Angel, Iceman and Nightcrawler) discovered their "home." Double Helix joined the Tunnel Dwellers' leader, the one-eyed man named Cyclops to oppose them and threatened Nightcrawler their leader had killed before. Their plan was successful as the X-Men fled. Subsequently Double Helix witnessed the arrival of Church of Humanity assassin Mister Clean (Paul Botham). Clean, calling himself the genetic cleanser, was hellbent on wiping out all mutants, starting with the Dwellers. He first killed their leader Cyclops and four of his aides, which caused Double Helix and the others to panic and run for their lives. Clean then proceeded to pick them off one by one.

(Uncanny X-Men I#397) - Having survived the initial assault, Double Helix joined a number of Dwellers, including Harmony and Clara, as they made their way through the service tunnels in an attempt to get out of London. En route, the group discussed if the mutant who had helped Harmony deliver her baby could have been an X-Man. However, none of them knew how to recognize one. Getting hungry from the trip, one half of Double Helix asked Saccharine if he could snack on her sugary sweat. She didn't mind, allowing him to scoop some of her sugary sweat up with his finger, an act that thoroughly grossed out his siamese twin. Just then, Nightcrawler teleported himself, Angel and Iceman to their exact location and offered to help the Dwellers against Mister Clean.

(Uncanny X-Men I#398) - Now under the protection of the X-Men, Double Helix and the other Tunnel Dweller survivors were nevertheless eventually tracked down by Mister Clean. However, Iceman protected the band of mutants with a wall of ice that kept Double Helix and company safe while Clean was stuck in a corner of the tunnel with the feral X-Man Wolverine who killed the killer by burning him with his own flamethrower. In the aftermath, the X-Men offered the Tunnel Dwellers sanctuary at Charles Xavier's Institute. Figuring they were not cut out to join a crusade, the Dwellers declined the offer. They revealed their plans to head for the suburbs where they were hoping to live out their lives in peace.

Comments: Created by Joe Casey, Ian Churchill, Art Thibert and Norm Rapmund.

Mr. Clean wiping out the London Tunnel Dwellers was, of course, an homage to 1986's famed Mutant Massacre during which the Marauders butchered most of the Morlocks who lived in New York's sewers.

The London Tunnel Dwellers also appeared in the X-Men Novel X-Men: Watchers on the Walls (May, 2006) during the Chlorite invasion of Earth. Tunnel Dwellers who appeared in the novel were Nessie, Madcow and Spiny Norman.

Double Helix, as part of the Morlocks, received a handbook profile in the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z#7 (March, 2009).
